Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack One review - Eurogamer

Martin Robinson; How wonderful it is to have F-Zero back. There's plenty of fan service in the first DLC pack for Mario Kart 8, but none of it hits quite as hard as the once-forgotten series' slight return, its anti-grav track winding blissfully through Nintendo's hyper-clean vision of the future. The newly introduced race through Hyrule Castle might hit some high notes, sure, but we get to walk between these parapets every other year. The steel-blue metropolis of Mute City has been lost to home consoles for well over a decade.

Nintendo gets away with everything

Perjoss3826d ago

It is disgusting how they get away with releasing these fun games that make people smile and generally remind people why they got into gaming in the first place. Something must be done, they must be brought to justice!

DarkLord10033826d ago (Edited 3826d ago )

Oh right -
EA and everybody else who is releasing DLC: BAAAAD
Nintendo: GOOOOOD

did I get that right?

Jikla3826d ago (Edited 3826d ago )

@Darklord1003
The reason Nintendo get's away with it is because They worked on the DLC after the game was done and didn't chop away a part of it and make it day one dlc or pre order dlc like most other game companies do. Also The dlc has a lot of content for the money and is released about 5 months after the game release. Nintendo is doing DLC right compared to other companies.

iSuperSaiyanGod3826d ago

DLC came with 8 different color yoshi's , 8 different color shy guys , 6 new characters, 8 new carts & 16 new courses for what $12? Yeah that's so horrible

live2play3826d ago

You actually did get that right. We got 8 new tracks. 3 new characters.(not just skins, they have different animations, voice clips) and 3 new karts
For a very low price. I shrudder to think how much other companies would have handled it.

So yes when nintendo does it, its good

iSuperSaiyanGod3826d ago

If you got the combo you get 8 karts ,16 skins , 6 new characters , 16 tracks for $12

DoctorJones3826d ago

It's much better value than Little Big Planet DLC. That crap is toxic.

snookiegamer3826d ago

Not hating or nothin'...but Dayum!! I'm so blessed to have had the good sense to pick up my Wii U bundle instead picking up Xbox One/Titanfall Bundle last summer!

I love Mario Kart 8...it's so frickin playable and super colorful fun! ...OMG!it's almost my favorite of the entire series, but SNES Mario Kart has way too many chidhood memories for any Kart to replace that! ;)

JimmyDM903826d ago

I wish characters like Kirby, Diddy kong, falco and star fox were coming to MK8.

higgins783826d ago

That's the only problem Nintendo have - if you can call it a problem. For us fans of Nintendo, with its rich back catalogue and heritage, we can never get enough.

JimmyDM903826d ago (Edited 3826d ago )

It's because of Nintendo's deep roster that I can't help feeling like the inclusion of Tanuki Mario and Cat Peach or Baby Roselina are missed opportunities.

Imagine how amazing a Kirby course set in the clouds or one made entirely of yarn would be. Or how sleek and stylish karts based off the Arwing and Great Fox from Star Fox could be. Hopefully Nintendo continues the trend of worthwhile DLC so they can quench the Nintendo fandom's seemingly unquenchable thirst haha.

Also I miss dry bones.

-Foxtrot3826d ago (Edited 3826d ago )

Only bad thing of the DLC was the two pointless characters which could of been skins...like Yoshi/Shy Guy colours

Link is the only decent one of the three, why not have Zelda included and maybe Kirby

We all know now what the next game is going to be like...Smash Bros Kart, and in my opinion it's glady welcomed. They will have to include a story mode though and have hubs like CTR, it would advance the franchise.

I would love to see more tracks inspired by other Nintendo franchises, IMO the Excitebikes, F-Zero, and Zelda tracks are three of the best in the DLC. I don't see them expanding the roster too much, though. Maybe they should keep the core game Mario focused (with the exception of the few DK characters) and take inspiration from other franchises for the DLC. That'd be a nice model.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

gold_drake390d ago

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot689d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr688d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt689d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky687d ago (Edited 687d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long687d ago (Edited 687d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
