Can a plagiarized game win Game of the Year?

For many weeks now, Pro has been battling the many Uruks within Mordor, while stating time after time, "This game is Game of the Year material", but is it? When a game's biggest facets of movement are blatant rip-offs of other major games, does that game deserve to wear the GOTY crown?
Pro & Con discuss.

Copying game mechanics has been a mainstay of gaming since the invention of video games. Once a successful gameplay mechanic is made it becomes copied over and over until it becomes a genre. FPS, 2D side scrollers, RPGs, etc. all started with one game.

A plagiarized game is taking an existing game and just re-skinning it, which SoM definitely is not.

I agree, what game isn't a continuation of the gaming industries continued evolving.

Well a generic game can't really win GOTY. That's why you never see COD or AC win the top awards. Right now I gotta say Sunset OD should win it.

But due to the scores I think many people would just give it to Bayonetta 2, which I don't think it deserves those scores. I don't see how the game is better than a DmC. It should get the same score as DmC.

You're on drugs. COD and AC get nominated and talked about within the realm of game of the year almost every year

I sure hope Tony Hawks fetch quest simulator doesn't get GOTY just because it's got pretty colours doesn't make it a winner especially with it's 10 year old humor, and Bayonetta 2 is every way better than DMC you probably haven't even played it, it's well deserving of those scores and is one of the best games this year.

Nicely said, what game is completely new.

Well said, mate. If only the unlearned gamers would understand this.

Darkside did similar things. Anyway, it won't win GotY, so don't worry about it. And while I'm pretty sure AC:Unity will be an amazing game this yr, innovating quite a bit finally lol, I do wish they use batman's combat b/c it's my least favorite part of AC. And up until now, It hasn't had any stealth aspects to it.

Actually, AC:Unity blatantly rips off Splinter Cell with its new stealth. Ubisoft owns both so it's a moot point.

Anyway, I think Shadows of Mordor does enough innovating to be it's own game, even if it does borrow a little. Once November is done though, there won't be anymore talk of Shadows as GotY. It's really good though if a bit repetitive.

Shadow of Mordor is a complete rip-off, so no, I'm not saying it isn't a good game, its just no good on its own accord.

Definitely Game of the Year material, is Assassins Creed 100% unique? NO. Every single game ever made has had some level of inspiration from a game before it.

Pro from 1MG here.
Honestly, it can still win, there's enough new stuff in the game and the stuff that was inspired from Batman, Assassins Creed & Tomb Raider are well used and together, we have an overall great game.

What game would be exactly the same if there had been no other games ever made? All that should matter is that the player enjoys it the most.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but I just don't think it will win over other really good games that aren't being commonly labeled as a direct copy of other big games.

Anything is possible tend not to follow many award winning games.
