Half-Life2 Episode3 at E3, PS3 version excluded

According to the official E3 page, the third episode of the Half-Life2 franchise will be shown for both PC and Xbox360. The PS3 will not be part of the show. It has to be reminded that PS3 gamers are still waiting for the Orange Box to be fixed, 8 months since its launch.

Specific devs prefers specific platforms to work with. Valve is no different. The are comfortable to work on the x360 as i read is basically the same as the PC which they are good at. All devs have their reasons and what they are willing to live with. Its not all about money anyway. Money is obviously very important but there are alot of other factors too like working relationship, specific console strengths they feel will suit the games they are developing. Some devs like Kojima is really about art and pick the console they fell will realise their vision. Others will pick the one that they know will dominate and last longer to maximize their investment etc,etc.

@ Kazuma that's funny so everyone is developing for all the consoles are they ? Perhaps you could contact Insomniac or perhaps Naughty Dog they don't seem to be all that interested in developing for the 360, they seem quite content to make do with the limited sales on the PS3. Yet the minute a developer shows no interest in developing for the PS3 out come the flaming torches and banners screaming "unfair".

It is no surprise that Valve has no interest in developing for the PS3, the orange box did not do spectacularly well on that console and they have decided not to bother. At least Valve gave the PS3 a chance, unlike Insomniac and Naughty Dog.

ND is a Sony first party studio. With Insomniac, Sony helped them alot with their development when they first began and they are use to Sony tech as well as having a great working relationship according to Ted. None of these two bashed the x360 though unlike Gabe.

I see what you are saying cmrbe whether Gabe bashes the PS3 or not, it is up to him and his company what platform he develops on. Some PS3 users just "expect" the game should be on their platform. Yet at the same time they enjoy the fact that Sony and their developers restrict access to their games. I think that smacks of double standards myself. I also believe Naughty Dog haven't been quiet in slagging the 360 off, I clearly remember them saying the 360 couldn't "handle" uncharted. How do they know did they try, did they even bother ? No they just spouted the rubbish their pay masters told them too. For the record I think both consoles are equally awful this generation so I show no favouritism. Valve clearly prefer developing on the 360 and PC and that is their right, but to see PS3 owners going "wah wah don't like Valve now" is pathetic.

From the outset Gabe really didn't want anything to do with the PS3 but they still went ahead and release a port to the PS3 which according to many PS3 owners is buggy as hell. what i DID say is that all major developers and publishers that are not owned by a console manufacturer or heavily influenced by them "moneyyyy" are dropping the exclusives and releasing it for every console available (say like alone in the dark - ps3,360,pc,ps2,wii)and since the ps3 is based on parallel processing (and since future games and apps on the pc will go that way, some already are) it always seemed strange to me that valve, quite the pioneers in pc gaming and rightly so, have taken that approach to the ps3.

Okay, Half Life was superb. I rememebr playing that, but HL2 was in comparison, nothing. It didn't break any new ground, the only thign that saved it was the awesome narrative, and it does have that. It was a letdown if anything.

And to be honest the physics weren't totally innovative, it was done by Tresspasser soon after Half Life. And boy was than an awesome game. Boobs, physics and dinosaurs all in an FPS = Win.

For me, I already played Half-Life 1 & 2 on PC, where they belong. I had fun with them, and they occupied my time quite nicely, but I do think it's kind of a slap in the face on valve's part for not doing a good job (or any job for that matter) on the PS3 port, instead shipping it off to EA, so that Gabe Newell can invest more time in being quite possibly the world's best impersonator of Jabba the Hutt.

Gabe has made it blatantly clear that he's a fanboy (or fanJabba) and it makes him look like a real asshole (almost to the degree of Itagaki), and that's my only problem with the situation. If they genuinely felt that deving for the PS3 at the time was a real issue, they should've just said so, instead of being a total Twinkee Annihilator about it.

What Did Half Life do? A lot, and I rememebr playing it on PC, and it was superb, I still have it, just not installed.

But Half Life 2 and all it's episodes, they aren't milking, as such, but they are certainly becuase of story alone, and the story IS good enough for that. It's a great story. But it's not like they have refreshed the series at all. It just seems lazy, without the PS3 version to mention.

Portal was great though. But correct me if I am wrong but Gabe Newell was not involved there at all.

Anyway, Tresspasser was an awesome PC game,t hat came out right after Half Life, and had physics akin to Half Life 2, infact, more complex.

HL2 is the most boring FPS with one of the most uninspiring main character and tacked on and non exsistant plot. Also the puzzles feel tacked on, i will say though the characters are very lively and charming but other than that i don't see the big attraction to the game. I don't understand how people can say it's one of the best games ever when in my eyes it isn't. It's average. It's no Deus Ex or System Shock 2. Hell i'd even go so far as to even include Portal on that list (even though it's very short).

I've always heard about HL before and then came HL2 but still I didn't care because at that time, I didn't even have a PC. at the time when I got my PS3, I got TOB as a present and you're right! the only one I am interested in is Portal and that's it! I tried TF2 and I think all of you knew what's bugging that game and I stopped playing it after several plays.

then I tried the 1st HL2 even though I have no interest in it(and yeah, since I got it for free). my impression; hell that game is BORING! I came half way and never had the interest in finishing it ever again, let alone going to play ep1 and ep2. and I was wondering, "what is so great about this game anyway?" I love FPS and heck I've finished R:FoM 3 times and CoD4 2 times and lots and lots of online with those games but still wanting more.(spare me because I've never played any FPS on any console before I played R:FoM)

Valve likes to keep their dev team on the smallish side and they are very selective and brilliant (portal is testament to that) about who they hire. they don't have the manpower or resources to develop for the PS3 considering it's a much bigger jump from PC (their roots) to PS3 then it is from PC to 360. So the multi-platform orange box was basically an instance of Valve testing the console waters. basically the sh!t hit the proverbail fan as far as the PS3 port went. EA did less than a stellar job of porting it and it didn't sell well on the PS3. I'm guessing Valve probably lost money.

Now, this is Sony's turn to step in and say, "hey we really want the Episode 3 on our console. we will help you port it." and then they could strike a deal. However, Sony isn't doing this so *poof* there goes a PS3 version of Episode 3 vanishing into thin air.

They have been able to realize that developing for the PS3 isn't as hard as they thought (it was just different to do. Just ask Rockstar about that). Metal Gear Solid 4 just proves that devs could do some quality things with the PS3 hardware once they can get the stuff down. Meanwhile, Valve has not let up on how much they "hate" the PS3, and they don't even want to TRY. All these devs are starting to develop for the PS3 like its nothing, and Valve refuses to even get their feet wet. Which tells us a few things: That they are either lazy (because they just don't want to do anything with it even though it's obvious now it's not hard at all to develop PS3 games), they are fanboys (because they refuse to develop games for the PS3 and just dump the porting job over to someone and doesn't give a DAMN what the finished product is or how it's recieved, but their so concerned if a 360 or PC version is good), or they are only in it for the money. Take your pick, but they have really got to stop this behavior. Many others are now echoing that same sentiment, and it's clear you are refusing to even read what is being said and only dismissing their comments as "PS3 fanboy" arguments (as if they are the only ones that "b!tch" about anything. 4: It wasn't like EA was holding a gun to Gabe's triple-chinned head telling him he had to ACCEPT their offer. Valve always stated that they don't favour the PS3. No surprise here. Certain devs will favor one platform over another for many,many reasons. Not everything is about money or loyalty. From the sounds of Gabe's comments he is afraid about the direction Sony is taking game dev with the PS3 which is quite different from what they are use too and which is what they are promoting. I think it more about a difference of ideas and methods of game dev that currently puts Sony offside with valve more than anything else.

I didn't get to play Half-Life 1 when it originally released, our home PC was incapable of running it...it wasn't until 2001 when I bought a PC for college that I finally got to play it...and it was great, but looked pretty dated by that point...

It's nice to know that some of you Sony Lovers are feeling a little peeved - some never actually admit to this preferring to say rather predictably i might add that either they don't care for the game anyhow or that it's better on pc.

I'd rather all formats succeed or that there was in fact only one console were it to come to that but right now it's satisfying knowing you guys know how us Saturn,N64,Xbox1 and Gamecube owners felt all the time we were being starved of some truly special games.PS2 was dreadful compared to Xbox and Gamecube which made it even worse at the time.

A true gamer would have jumped toward the ps2 then at least for a selection of titles , and you had years and many price cuts to do so . Yes I heard what he said at the same time Epic Games released Unreal Tournament 3 with no problem. Insomniac released two big titles within the same year and they're an independant company. The PlayStation 3 can do more at the same time the more you put on screen the harder it is to program. That's just common sense it's like saying the bigger the numbers the longer the answer is.

What they're talking about is just the learning curve because of the new architecture. Once developers start learning I will asure you that a lot of companies are going to wish they did the same thing. Just look at Resistance: Fall of Man to Perfect Dark Zero. Both launch titles and tell me which one people are still playing today?

Look at Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (not full game) to Froza Motor Sport 2. WarDevil: Unleash The Beast Within was mutliplatform now a PlayStation 3 exclusive. That's because the XBOX 360 can't do 1080p at 60fps, Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer a PlayStation 3 exclusive and they (Quantic Dream) did an impressive demo within 3 months.

The thing with the XBOX 360 multiplatform games look at than the exclusives and do better. Halo 3 was knocked by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Resisdent Evil 5 looks to be the best looking game on that platform, and Grand Theft Auto 4 used all of the data space on the XBOX 360 so good luck with the next one.

The new architecture allows for more freedom at the same time the more you do the harder it is.

don't get me wrong, Valve is a FANTASTIC developer, and i absolutely love Half Life 2 (i've yet to get the Orange Box, however, so i haven't played Portal or Team Fortress 2 yet), but Gabe Newells complete and utter disdain, hatred, and disrespect for the Playstation 3 just turns me off for ANY project they are working on, no matter what the quality.

so what, they want to just give a big "fvck you" to millions of Playstation 3 gamers because they think the console is too hard to develop for? well then, it's completely in us Playstation 3 owner's rights to give a big "fvck you" right back by not supporting their titles.

i would understand them not developing for the PS3 for financial reasons, or an exclusivity deal with Microsoft or something, but because they think it's "too hard" is a bit of a cop out, especially for a group of devs as talented as Valve. i mean, if Epic managed to get their Unreal Engine 3 running on the PS3; and it's not optimized for SPU usage, either; it managed to get Unreal Tournament 3 to look like it did through clever utilization of code to work within the 256MB/256MB split between the Cell and RSX, despite the fact that the console is designed for data to be STREAMED, not cached to the RAM, it's the reason why the pipeline bandwidth is so large; 33gigs per second for the RSX, and 36gigs per second for the Cell, i think it goes (please correct me if i'm wrong on those numbers).

anyway, Valve lost a lot of credit with me with that whole "do over" comment back in 2006, when the PS3 launched, and when you have devs like Kojima and his team working WONDERS on the PS3, i can't help but not respect Valve as much as i used to (and i DID. a LOT).

Are valve's stuff the best there is 360 ? simply put no . Each element on its own or combined of the orange box , and from was it seems the future left 4 dead title , arent the most groundbreaking (technically speaking of course) titles of the 360 . Framerate isnt perfect , and the orange box is of course not working as well as the pc version , even if running well overall .

I first played Half Life on my PS3 and even with all its missgivings this game is 'Amazing' and I love it...Question is do I buy another 360 again or do I get a kick ass PC??? but guaranteed to get this game one way or another!

I'll clear a few things up with hl. The first was a masterpiece, no doubt.

The second was good, but not quite as good as the first, episode1 was good but not as good, it's gone down hill for me, maybe i've just had enough of gordon.

SOrry but the online sucks as well, if you like playing bots, all power to u.

Graphics, while they have got better, they are not in the same league as many games out now.

The shaders are good, the textures are very poor. It feels flat.

Story is good, but i hope this is the last.

Physics are good, but again, it's been done better.

So yes the first was ground breaking. But not any more.

Valve isn't a sh!tty developer, Half-Life is not overrated (although Episode One did not have the same WOW effect as the others, mostly because they were still using the Citadel and City 17 as the environment) and yes, Valve doesn't really favour the PS3.

I have alot of respect for the Half-life franchise as a long time PC gamer, it really pushed modding to new levels, the story was actually told extremely well for a First Person Shooter, and the Physics engine is pretty impressive, even by todays standards.

The Fact is that Half- life has pioneered the gaming industry in alot of ways when it comes to PC gaming, but hasn't done a whole lot on consoles, I don't think that really has anything to do with the games, more than it does the fans of the series, where 98% of the fans will buy it for their PC before they will any consoles.

As far as Gabe goes he pretty much dug his own grave when it comes to Sonys fans for his comments about the PS3 from almost day one, he has done nothing but bash the system, even going so far as to say that sony should just scrap it and try again. So when valve makes choices that effect the development of one of their biggest games that negatively impacts the PS3 imperticular than people naturally assume Gabe had something to do with it, the guy doesn't like the PS3 and thats more than obvious. Valve is a very talented group of people, but Gabe tends to hurt their public image at times.

The Truth is that both the 360 and PS3(although both will always lag a bit behind PCs) are at this point pretty even in terms of performance, yes both have their strengths and weaknesses but 90% of the games that are being released look completely identical, so these flame fest are pretty pointless.

I can't wait to buy it for my Xbox 360. I have both the 360 and PC version of the Orange Box (I'm that big a Valve fanboy) and they're both identical except for Team Fortress. So don't give this BS about Half-Life being better on the PC.

Portal 2 will be an Xbox exclusive too. Sony really shouldn't have pissed off so many third party devs with their strong arm tactics back in the PS2 days. Now, the mighty have fallen and the smallest violin in the world is playing for the crumbling Sony empire.

Stunt is right, how reliable is that web page?, EA said that Madden 09 wasn't going to be made for PC and yet if you look for the games that -supposedly- will appear on E3 for the PC, Madden 09 comes up.. what gives?!
