The exceptions to this case come in the form of the Red Alert series. When the first title dropped in 1996, players were surprised by the somewhat novel idea of an alternate history. The Red Alert series all starts with Albert Einstein traveling back in time to kill Adolf Hitler, thereby circumventing the second World War. It's now been nearly 8 years since Red Alert's hugely successful sequel, and this year Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is looking to lure the masses back for yet another look at the alternate history/future (and its classic live-action cutscenes). Dragon age 2 was not a bad game, just a terrible sequel if that makes any sense. Should have been it's own IP.
I loved Dragon Age II. I even got the platinum trophy for it. That was the very first medieval themed fantasy RPG that I enjoyed aside from an Ultima game I played in the early 90's at a cousins house.
Lord of Shadows 2 was one that left me scratching my head because I loved the first one! Red Faction Armageddon was another one that I still wonder why they didn't just give us something more like Guerrilla.
