An interesting perspective. I hope he is right, less shooters and more RPGs would be good for the industry

PabloMustasch1537d ago

I hope so, to hell with FPS!

FPS sales have peaked and are only going to go down

blitz06231537d ago

I hope he's right. Miss those turn based RPGs. Everyone now just wants to 'take advantage' of the hardware. Is it too much to ask for the traditional turn based or even SRPGs to come back?

nX1537d ago

I would take a RPG over any other game any time.

CorndogBurglar1537d ago (Edited 1537d ago )

While that might be true, unfortunately, FPS games are what sell the most.

There is a very large group of people that only play FPS and Sports games. (Casual crowd).

I'm not really basing this on any actual statsitics, but i have to think that even if RPG sales went up, and FPS sales went down, FPS games would still outsell the RPG's.

I only say that because there are too many casual gamers out there that play FPS games, but not RPG's. (Like your gamers that only buy consoles for the new CoD/Battlefield and Madden games) Where as, most people that play an RPG, would also be likely to pick up an FPS.

I could be wrong, but thats how it seems to me.

It kinda already is when every genre is taking RPG elements and calling them revolutionary. Even mp ranking system is nothing but progression system from rpgs.

CorndogBurglar1537d ago

Thats a good point. You're definitely not wrong. But having elements of RPG games is a far cry (4) from having an actual full blown RPG.

But genres have gotten so diversified over the years. Back in the day, the only things we used to consider RPG's were something like Final Fantasy, or Dragon Quest. Something like that. But over the years, devs have gotten more creative, and technology has allowed to implement these things into other games.

Now we have FPS RPG's, Turn Based RPG's, Third Person Action RPG's. Now, pretty much any genre can be made into an RPG.

Now that I think about it, I think we would be hard pressed to find a game that DOESN'T have any RPG elements in there somewhere, no matter how insignificant they might be.

Good comment, man. I hadn't really looked at things like that before.

Magicite1537d ago

Totally agree on this, although I still enjoy 3rd person view shooters with action elements.

AgentSmithPS41537d ago

I love single player RPGs because there's nobody there to spoil things you want to figure out for yourself, no griefers, exploiters, stackers, stat padders, etc. I just hope some of these RPGs will secretly plan to unveil a VR version too, eventually (and you too GTA).

Games like BF4 can be a fun experience but too often random strangers can ruin it, including the strangers that made and 'balanced' the game. It's nice to have some peace alone in your own game sometimes.

Cha0tik1537d ago

I see RPGs and Survival Horrors will be the games to buy this generation. They are both unique genres that haven't had the attention they deserve. Kinda tired of the same game every year or so (COD).

nX1536d ago (Edited 1536d ago )

Yes I see the same coming, it's becoming a trend. "The Division" is being marketed as a RPG and Silent HillS is being developed by the greatest gamemaker of all time, these genres will make a PS2-style comeback and bring Japan back :D

Cha0tik1536d ago

Let's just hope they are done right. I'm ready for some great RPGs and Horror games since they were not a big thing during the PS3 era.

I would love for RPG's to be the big genre that devs push. And why not? We are already seeing big epic movies that are being produced with trilogies in mind.

We have Marvel who is just knocking it out of the park with creating a huge movie universe.

This gen the tech is there to do the same. Huge epic games that put you in the role of changing the fate of the entire world/universe. I think RPG's have a deeper and more involved sense of gameplay than most FPS games.

Alexious1537d ago

Of course. They're generally far deeper games, in the same way that an epic fantasy/sci-fi movie can be far more compelling than your average action flick. That's not to say those aren't fun, though!
