During the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing, president Satoru Iwata was asked about region-locking.
Just remove it already, it causes more problems than it solves.
This is nothing compared to upgraded consoles in the same generation, like new 3ds now. Still, Iwata is not fired and people buying several Nin consoles
I don't see how it causes any problems. Care to explain? I'm just being honest here. What does it cause? Not being able to buy a game from a different region? While I very much don't care for region locking, and would absolutely love for it to be removed. And honestly see no point to there being on in the first place. I'm again, just being realistic in saying I see no problems that it causes.
Some of the problems it causes: >If a game comes out earlier in another region, customers won't be able to import the game and play it on their non-imported console >If a game is only released in, let's say, Japan, then only people with japanese consoles will be able to play the game >Because of the above, some people will have to buy multiple consoles to play the games they want to play These three problems caused by the region lock are probably the major ones. And yes, they are a bit similar.
"there may also be a benefit for us. Conversely, unlocking would require various problems to be solved, so while I can’t say today whether or not we intend to unlock, we realize that it is one thing that we must consider looking to the future." http://www.lionspire.com/wp...
That's how I read it, too. Not holding my breath, but we can hope, right?
Basically a non answer answer I would read nothing Into these comments other than it is not a high priority for them at this time
They live in the past. The World Wide Web started getting popular in 1995.
Pretty much one of the only real scumbag type of problem Nintendo has about their system.
Other than the cheap hardware, lacking features, bad gimmicks, and lack of games? Add those in and you got it right.
WiiU =/= All of Nintendo's products. My 3DS is far from lacking games.
Wii u's hardware is great, Wii u has many features and is even being improved with each update. The wii u's gameplay experience is not a gimmick, it is innovation Sony and MS are trying to copy. The wii u has the most highest rated games right now with the most scheduled exclusively. If you don't like region locking, good, I don't like it either. But to diss the entire console that I know you don't own is just stupid.
Weird because all I see with Nintendo products are tons of fun games, hardware that anyone can afford, features that are appropriate for the hardware and nothing being forced in that nobody really wants. Which system were you referring too, the Xbone?
Lacking games ? well that is just complete nonsense.
> and lack of games? How is your watch_dogs holding up? How great is destiny? Oh yeah still waiting for those major hit exclusives? Of course. HYPE HYPE HYPE You know every console has its issues. But this "IT HAS NO GAMES" argument is getting old.
save us the trouble please.
Why is Iwata even still in charge at Nintendo? He's bungled so many products over the last decade or so, can't believe they keep him at the helm. And Nintendo continues to lose money every year, thanks to his poor decisions on products. Unbelievable.
Iwata is the most financially successful CEO in gaming history. They made more money in one year (cant remember if it was 2009 or 2010) than either of their competitors made in the entire gen. The Wii U is a stain on Iwata's otherwise financially outstanding tenure. Granted, his performance in the eyes of fans is a different subject, but he is far from being a poor CEO in a financial sense. It's plain and clear why shareholders don't want to get rid of him.
Because the shareholders that wanted to fire Iwata already sold their Nintendo stock- it has been trading pretty close to its 52 week lows and it is way way off from its all time highs it reached during the Wii days- So no Iwata is not very popular as a CEO among the investment communitty- not now and not for several years
Because unlike Sony Nintendo is now reporting profits again, so he's done what he's needed to do to get the company back on the right path...
Wait for holidays! http://fc09.deviantart.net/...
Do you realize Sony and Playstation are 2 different companies right? Also it seems like you missed this: http://www.dualshockers.com...
lifts carpet and sweeps the wii under.. nothing to see here..
Do remind us, what was Nintendo's debt ratio as of late?
This wouldn't be so much of a problem if Nintendo just localized software like Fatal Frame V without all the hassle of waiting or lack of assurance. Nintendo's release schedules for the different regions only make the region-locking issue worse. Either localize the content more concurrently between the regions or do away with region-locking altogether.
Dude is a dumb ass.
And so forth let the Iwata hate continue on N4G or in general. Iwata just doesn't catch a break even after recovering.
I'm a nomad researcher. That's the reason I don't have a Nintendo console. Just remove it please.
Don't see what the fuss is really. Not as if I travel the world buying games from different continents or look at what's available for import. Majority of the games for the Wii U I want, I have, if not, they're on the release schedule! Cry baby fanboys looking for further justification that their machine is better!!
For me personally I want Rune Factory 4 for 3ds, but it only got released in america. I think the main reason people want it is that there are sometimes massive delays between regions. So region unlocking does have befefits, it's not just for 'justification'
bring back the import adapters for that old school fill.
They should just make it optional. If a publisher doesn't want to region-lock their game, then they shouldn't have to do it. I would think that, sometimes, being region-free could actually improve sales.
Region locking is a hardware issue not a software issue. A console in England is not able to read an NTSC (NA) disc, this means that the console itself is region locked to the specific region where it was bought.
I'm not sure if I read the same text as some of the other guys here. It sounds like they are considering removing region locks in future based on this statement. "As for what should be done going forward, if unlocked for the benefit of the customers, there may also be a benefit for us. Conversely, unlocking would require various problems to be solved, so while I can’t say today whether or not we intend to unlock, we realize that it is one thing that we must consider looking to the future."
Region locked games is a dated feature now. It's nothing more than a nuisance.
At the moment Nintendo seems eager to please it's fans, maybe due to them being the underdog this gen, I think their chances for removing region locking are higher than ever before.
