Review: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - NLife

NLife:
"Konami's Castlevania has changed directions in recent years, with the Lords of Shadow titles polarizing fans of the long-running series. That's why fans of the "Metroidvania" outings should flock to the Wii U eShop and download the Game Boy Advance Castlevania titles, which feature the series' signature exploration-based, semi-linear platforming action gameplay. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was a launch title for the Game Boy Advance, and the Wii U GamePad's bright screen and the Virtual Console's ability to save at any time make this the definitive way to experience this fun, deep game."

Castlevania Lacarde Chronicles 2 just released on PC in May 2017 and is an incredible MetroidVania CV game. 10/10!!!

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2826d ago

Is that a Metroidvania? Just from the name I'm almost inclined to think Classivania, haha.

Blastoise2827d ago

That's not a Castlevania game...

Ori by far, the best most recent example of this type of side scrolling adventure game, I would love to see them make a Castlevania game, it would be amazing

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2827d ago

Honestly, I think Konami would do well to hand the reigns to an indie dev like Sega did.

Please download and play CASTLEVANIA LACARDE CHRONICLES 2! It's Konami approved, features SOTN voice actors MetroidVania CV classic, awesome graphics and sound. A truly amazing fan made indie CASTLEVANIA .

Not your standard ones, I like this list.

Kabukiface2827d ago

Aria of Sorrow is lit. I mean just look at that spooky skeleton.

Lauriellen2825d ago

Cool thoughtful list, ya hippie. It's clear you're really into games when your picks aren't all the most popular ones but are the ones that best fit the parameters of the list.

Nice article!

Harmony of Dissonance's soundtrack problems were super weird and not (past) Konami-like back when I first played it, but now it all makes sense. The GBA was built to be a portable SNES, and the SNES had this gorgeous Sony sound chip that put it above the Genesis for nearly every multiplatform game out there. They broke up with Sony in the Playstation snafu during GBA R&D and therefore no longer had their awesome sound chip expertise behind the system. Nintendo, without a partner in sight, boldly tried to make their own, but it was basically a NES-grade chip with extra tracks for sampling.

This is why other GBA game soundtracks (like Advance Wars or Aria of Sorrow) might sound better but also fuzzy - it's all samples, all the time, nothing's native to the chip, because the chip sucks. Harmony of Dissonance, for whatever reason (I think it was a throwback to the NES, given the other throwbacks in the game), used the chip.

Despite the awful sound, the composition behind the tracks is all pretty good and super different from what you'd expect in a Castlevania game.

CV lll for the Nes is my all time fav out of every game they have put out & I'm waiting for it to become remade in 3D classic for the eShop VC.

One of my favorite game series.. I completed almost every game.. Very much worth playing..

Circle of The Moon is easily one of my favourite handheld games of all time. Few games on the little screen feel as epic or as awe-inspiring.

So many late nights playing Circle of the Moon. Great names for all the games too.

Konami out did themselves with the portable versions of Castlevania.

rjason123163d ago

I wish they would have created another trilogy for the 3ds.

I haven't bothered with the GBA VC on the Wii U, but if they port those to the NX, I'll probably check them out. I would really like to see Shining Soul (sp*) end up on the GBA VC.

Gamings Greatest Gadgets: The “Vampire Killer”

Vgamers writes: Gaming is literally chocked full of awesome weapons, sweet gadgets and general bits and bobs designed to streamline your killing experience. But only the greatest weapons become iconic; synonymous with the game itself; two peas in a disk/cartridge/downloadable-do odad shaped pod. In this series, we look at these legendary gizmos from across gaming’s glorious past, and with the recent re-release of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on the Nintendo E-Shop it is only fitting that we take a look at the Vampire Killer.
