Can Sunset Overdrive’s Reviews Drive Sales of the Game and the X1?

EB's Matt Heywood writes, "Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive is now available, and based on early review scores it’s shaping up to be a critical hit, but will that translate to high sales numbers and Xbox One purchases?

It’s too early to tell if the game will be a financial win for MS and Insomniac Games, but I fear that the over-the-top and in-your-face marketing campaign may limit the game’s full sales potential. Even with the high review scores (currently hovering around an 82 on Metacritic, we gave it a 90) many gamers are still on the fence about purchasing the game; you just have to look in the comments section on N4G to see this troubling trend. The game is great, but does anyone else think that it won't do well financially because of how it was marketed?

mikeslemonade1503d ago

Of course it will drive sales, but I would say it won't make a huge difference. Take into consideration, it's the holidays. All the systems will sell well here.

Remember.. I don't really consider this much of the deal because the Kinect is $150. So minus the kinect you're still paying the same base price for just the system.

There is a stigma that Xbox owners only buy certain types of games. Namely dudebro shooters and fps's.

This game could either confirm or dispel that thinking. We will soon find out with the sales.

My guess is that they won't take to it the way that they should. Time will tell whether insomniac made the right choice siding with Microsoft and Xbone

@Paytaa. Again I said it was a stigma. Didn't say that's the way it was. But it is generally known that Playstation has backed a wider variety of games which have been more accepted by their fanbase. Heavy rain is a perfect example.

Like I say. Sales of Sunset overdrive is a good litmus test

Paytaa1503d ago

I've been an Xbox owner since 2001 and I play a wide variety of games spanning different genres. Just because the best-selling games are FPS games doesn't mean that represents the rest of the install base. I mean if you're really going to go there then I guess Playstation is in the same boat since the best selling titles on PS3 were always CoD. No matter what article I see you in you always throw something about Xbox in there and blather on about how "PS4 one ups Xbox One here and there" when it's just a fanboy talking.

SonofGod1503d ago

Actually I have noticed that too.

There are certain Xbox exclusives that would have sold better on PS than Xbox. Like with Remedy. Alan Wake was a really good single player game, but still underperformed in sales.

Alan Wake is a game that would appeal better to the PS audience.

Xbox gamers are not that interested racing games either. Even though 360 and PS3 sold almost the same amount of consoles Forza only had half the sales of Gran Turismo.

To be honest, a game like SSOD would sell better on PS4 than XO even if the console sales were the same.

Trekster_Gamer1503d ago

Dumb statement. I would say most Xbox owners enjoy a great variety of games.

Xb1ps41503d ago

I doubt it... Sony fanatics are just too stubborn, even after psn continuously goes down lol

iDadio1503d ago

Your comment suggests your an MS fanatic?

But seriously even the hardline fanboys can be persuaded, a friend of mine is tempted to get an X1 for the HMCC and on release he would bluntly say he was not interested.

Xb1ps41503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

I prefer my xb1 but no I'm not a fanatic, I own both..

Fanatics own one and will live by it till death to them nothing else exists or can be any good...

Again, if the extremely overhyped Titanfall didn't boost much, what makes anyone believe this game will?

We are a week away from a new COD and the dumb ppl at Microsoft decided to release a new IP this week. Again, bunch of noobs in charge of Xbox this gen. There's also AC:U, Farcry 4, GTAV. Seriously, what was Microsoft thinking??

Sunset Overdrive sales will suffer because of Microsoft. This game will be forgotten come Nov 4.

Meanwhile, PS4 users will be using what Sony gave them in update 2.0 with those big game releases like COD:AW, AC:U, and Far cry 4.

The only one here making the right moves is Sony so far. Sony keeps acting and Microsoft reacting to Sony's smart moves and the price cut and bundles are a very clear example of that. At least Microsoft knows the magnitud this new Share Play feature will have and made a move, something many fanboys here are underestimating.

christocolus1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

Its you again trying to spread your anti MS campaign. Going by the quality of the game and the reviews its obvious it was ready for what should MS have done? Locked it away for 3months? Give it a rest dude.. Not everyone will be buying Halo and Cod,everygame has a chance to do well during this season. SO, ForzaH2, Ori, Fantasia even D4.. Stop talking crap.

aceitman1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

@Insomnia_84 I agree with ur comment on the titanfall part, even the preorders for sso the last week of preorders where only at 77,000 while titanfall had 441,000 at last week of preorders so my guess is it will sell about 125-175,000

DigitalRaptor1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

@ Christocolus

There's no need to get so defensive over that. What he said might've been worded fanboyishly (is that a word? Probably not), but hardly any of its is untrue.

Sunset Overdrive is going to be a flop. Despite some decent advertising, Microsoft are doing exactly what the Xbox guys said about Sony last gen and organising their release schedule in the holiday season only, to be cannibalised by the bigger multiplatform games that get the kind of marketing they deserve.

Forza Horizon 2 was their best effort in terms of marketing. I saw that advertised quite some, but still is not really being well supported by gamers.

Ori is a download game and will likely do pretty decent for the kind of game that it is. The fact it's on Steam/PC too will help it quite a bit, for for Xbone, don't expect the same kind of response.

Fantasia - seen no advertising for this whatsoever. They sent it out to die, which i'm not sure is a noble thing after they cut the Kinect requirement to this response: I doubt they'll be working with Microsoft with such enthusiasm again after all of that.

D4 - the game was also sent out to die and is a poor seller as confirmed by Swery himself.

I don't know why Microsoft is borderline ignoring these Kinect game in terms of marketing. You'd think that they want to prove its worth now that they've cut it out.

u got owned1503d ago

It will drive sales, but will it drive a lot that remains to be seen.

Game is a blast BTW. Highly recommended to every one who has a XBO

ThatEnglishDude1503d ago

I think it'll move a lot of units and prove to be a successful game and a promising new IP.

Thatguy-3101503d ago

The new IP is well received and should sell a few boxes but I just don't see it as the system seller many want it to be.

DeathOfTheFanBoy1503d ago

I've noticed many people on Facebook pages buying the SSOD bundle, not just for SSOD though, it's in prep for Halo mcc, I think that along with cod will sell quite a few xboxs this holiday

NatureOfLogic_1503d ago

After FH2 sales, I really don't expect it to sell very well. FH2 had more hype btw.

mhunterjr1503d ago

I keep hearing this, but what were fh2's sales? And are we making considerations for digital?

hello121503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

I always bought games at Gamestop, but since around March 2014 i have stopped. I buy all my games digitally now including FH2 and i know lot of people on x box have gone that way too.

Three reasons why i am sticking with digital.

Its cheaper i can buy a game off the American store for 59 dollars. I use Euros so its a saving off 15 Euros for me each time when my currency converts.

I game share with a friend, he can plays games i own and i can play games he owns.

I can now preorder games early and download them early and play them earlier.

FITgamer1503d ago

"FH2 had more hype btw." it may have had more hype, but this game has been marketed much more. I have only seen the FH 2 ad a handful of times. I've seen the SO commercial more times than any other Xbox One commercial to date.

WilDRangeRfc1503d ago

FH2 is 100x better than Failclub

No_Limit1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

MariahelFut...I mean Argumentum,

If you are going by vgchartz fake numbers one week launch sale that doesn't even include digital copies, I don't know what to say to you.

There are no official legit sale numbers reveal for FH2 and the closest we can get is the UK weekly chart and after 4 weeks, the physical copy of FH2 is still in the TOP #8. Not bad eh when newer titles on a larger install base like Driveclub is not even on the list.

I don't think It'll do well. I look at FH2 which had more hype for a longer period of time and also had good reviews, but still failed to sell well across multiplatforms.

ghostface91503d ago

no sales numbers out so dont know where your getting that nonsense

Afterlife1503d ago

No. The Xbox1s momentum is minimal at best. A minor spike in sales, yes. Then next week it will plummet. Titanfall is a good example of this. Titanfall had hype, this game doesn't compare.

ghostface91503d ago

hating on xbox but using an image from quantum break an x1 exclusive as your profile pic...
