Destiny Review — Forget the Hype, It Doesn’t Suck | theGeekCulture

TGC writes - Destiny does not suck. I know there are a lot of people out there saying that it does but I just can’t agree with them. Destiny is an amazing game, with some hiccups no doubt, that seems to have fallen victim to the weight of its own hype. After the Alpha and Beta releases the gaming community at large pumped Destiny’s tires to the point of bursting. Sure there was an ad campaign but in the long run the hype train for the game that hit Mach 1 in the weeks prior to its release was fueled by the excitement of the very people who had already played it. Perhaps they were expecting the game to be a bit different than the beta, somehow more involved, but what you saw in the beta was what you got in the final game. You know what? I think that’s ok. To say that a game is inherently bad just because it didn’t meet some kind of lofty expectations seems kind of odd. I look at it like this; every single day I leave work and have a lofty expectation that when I get home my wife will be wearing nothing but an apron while grilling me a juicy T-bone for dinner.....

Couldn't agree more... the game is more than good it's great and hope it has the longevity of other Bungie games...

ShowGun9013886d ago

thats what most of the $500MM was for, the longevity, not the initial development. i forsee updates and support for a good long while! see ya in the crucible!

Tapani3886d ago (Edited 3886d ago )

Destiny as a franchise has a budget of $500 million. It includes Destiny, Destiny DLC, Destiny sequels (probably a trilogy) and all the games on-going support.

So, saying that the first game cost 500m USD to make is misinformation.

venom063886d ago

another lame review for someone trying to just their purchase of this mediocre game.. Nowhere near 4.5/5.. that's basically perfect

Spinal3886d ago

The game is awesome. There's a reason millions are playing an still playing after a month.

By this time Titanfall had lost loads of players it truly lacked content. Those map dlc are not replacing the fact the game has like no guns there's about 3 rifles in the game lol terrible.

DivoJones3886d ago

Well we're a little over a month into it's release, i'm still playing it fairly consistently. But at lvl 28 I'm reaching the 'what's the point of trying for 29/30' point. I've done some partial Vault runs, basically never beaten the Templar, but was reinvited to kill Atheon and got some loot from that. I found the Vault of Glass more frustrating than fun, and if they're randomizing who gets teleported.. screw it. I'll just farm strange coins and buy the same gear. I got the Suros Regime from Atheon and could have bought it this week from Xur.
When the DLC drops in just over a month I hope it's got a decent amount of something to do, or i'll just relegate it to 'when i'm tired of the new CoD' role.

TM3333886d ago

Exactly! Feel free to add me on PS4 - TM333

joab7773886d ago

Ot doesn't suck at all bit u do run out of things to do. I'm a 30 lock, 28 hunter and 12 Titan and have everything xur is selling. Already done hard 2x and normal VoG 2x, both weekly 's and nightfalls.

"Forget the hype destiny doesn't suck"
says the guy that owns a ps4 and will not be able to play MCC lol kidding but honestly I don't agree with him the game is kinda sucky! As soon as people start admitting that the better off we will all be so honestly just let go of this game already!!! Your fired....

Digital_Anomaly3886d ago (Edited 3886d ago )

Let go? It's just getting started! I really think we've only seen a small portion of what the game could/will be. I mean if Brokenfield 4 was getting 8s and 9s it makes no sense that a release like this would get 5s and 6s. NONE!

Now, when MCC comes out I'll probably put Destiny down for a while... gimme some Halo 2 MP! I'll still go back to it though!!

mochachino3886d ago (Edited 3886d ago )

Don't forget Titanfall got 8s and 9s with zero story, only 3 Titans, and not that many maps for a full priced MP only game. Also some people couldn't even do the campaign because the community wasn't large enough...Destiny got improperly shafted by many major review sites because they decided to adopt new review standards the day it released (or they suck at their job of reviewing). Like every game I can see why some people don't like it but also it's obvious that millions of gamers do, despite the "professional" critics opinions.

Destiny is a great game, it's just didn't come close to the hype around it.

ShowGun9013886d ago

personally i'd rather play a new game than a remaster of something that came out a decade ago... don't get me wrong, MCC looks cool, but I didn't pick up any of sonys "remastered collections" on the PS3, and I probably wouldn't get MCC if i had a XO... i think i'd be playing FH2 and SSO for exclusives, and destiny for multiplayer.

mechanically there is nothing wrong with destiny, people just had dreams of a game that had EVERYTHING they wanted, whether thats an unbelievable, complex story, a map 3 times bigger than GTAV's, multiplayer thats literally better than any other game in history, 500 missions with absolutely no repetition... or for some people, all of the above!

Every complaint leveled against destiny is overlooked on other games scoring a 9...

Titanfall got good scores without co-op or a SP campaign AT ALL! (not to mention pretty much NO story!)

BF4 got good scores while the MP was so glitchy it was literally unplayable! (not to mention a copy/paste forgettable military story!)

COD Ghosts got good scores in spite of being a major step backwards in almost every relevent aspect! (story concept was cool, but still a step backwards, except for the dog!)

pretty much every game released ever has "repetition problems", so i never understood that either... heck, i quit AC:Black Flag before i finished it because of that reason, but it was still a cool game!

people need to keep their expectations in check!

JeffGUNZ3886d ago

This. People expected way more then what 60 price tag offered. The game is loaded with tons of things to do.

Tex1173886d ago

No, it doesn't "suck." The gameplay is too rock solid for that. Im 90 hours in and still enjoying it.

However, you can tell...even in the design of the game that Bungie had loftier goals for the title but for whatever reason, gutted it.

I tell you...if the game accomplished what I think Bungie set out to do in the beginning, it may have been a GOAT.

Maybe they will get it done with Destiny 2.

Perjoss3886d ago (Edited 3886d ago )

Good game, as the people above have already said, rock solid gameplay, really good fun, it just needs a ton more content. I'm hoping for a new planet with each DLC and a lot more content that i can use in conjuction with matchmaking, mone if this looking for groups on forums nonsense.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast285d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_285d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981285d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140285d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85285d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj285d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman285d ago (Edited 285d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake285d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn285d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg285d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07284d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

284d ago
Knightofelemia284d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom285d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac284d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake285d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark284d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde284d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125284d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
