The Evil Within Review - The Digital Fix

To have created something that is sure to live on in gaming eternity with reverence and love, such as is the case with Resident Evil, is always going to provide any future games you create to have an increased sense of anticipation and scrutiny. While the Resident Evil series has convulsed between the brilliant and the poor there has been a real belief that with The Evil Within Shinji Mikami would reanimate the corpse of the survival-horror genre.

what the actual F***, yeah the game might feel old but it's very very well designed and awesome

support these talented developers to make an outstanding nextgen sequel

thereapersson3467d ago

the game has flaws but does not deserve a 6 out of 10.

Wni03467d ago

Did you read the review or just look at the score? They give very specific reason of why it got... a 6/10. 6/10 is still a decent game.

Evil within has horrid recycled RE4 A.I, horrid enemy designs, laughable story, poor animations, broken combat, laughable upgrade system, boring protagonist, shocking camera, collecting green goo, too many unexplained moments, overuse of blood due to the lack of scare-factor...i could go on. The game feels beyond cheap and looks to be designed by amateurs...

Evil Within is influenced by many different games/ideas...yet manages to fuk it all up, it just doesn't know what it wants to be and just throws it all together because its what one would consider scary..without much thought. "hey look, it doesn't have to make sense, it's just disgusting OK?"

thats not all...

Scripted chase sequences, ammo scattered everywhere you go (and enemies dropping ammo and health when you kill them) so even though you are limited to how many you can carry, you will never practically run out, enemies with guns, sniper rifles and machine guns and dynamite and Molotovs, enemies using military vehicles with machine guns on top

Evil within is a 5/10 game, IMO!

Please, more games like this. Love the Old School. Never forget our origins.
The only thing i hate in this game is the FOV.

Plagasx3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

I'm sorry but this game is great. A proper return to old school survival horror.

I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Thank you Shinji Mikami.

Was it everything you had hoped for?
I remember you commenting regarding the reviews for the game, how you wanted the game to review well.
In my opinion is has reviewed well but I still think this game deserves nothing less than a 9. Its so good and a nod and wink to the old school Resident Evil games, I absolutely love it and HOPE we get a sequel or a spiritual successor.

Another review saying how bad the game is (old school) ... I just do not understand. Evil Within deserves at least 8.5/10 from me, and it is a strong position worthy even for a 9.5/10. I recommend.

There's a big difference between designing a game to feel old school & designing a lazy old school game.

It does offer a good glimpse of that nostalgic feeling of those great old school games but that is overshadowed by far too many lazy developer decisions.

It's a good game, not a great game, 6/10 is a fair score. I know everyone has their own opinions but I'm struggling to see how you can justify giving the game a 9.5/10 with such bad voice acting, dialogue, A.I. & animation problems. Which is being sold as the ultimate survival horror comeback ignoring actual horror elements & giving the player exploding arrows & arrows that freeze people into blocks of ice. Along with the main "evil" guy being the least scary thing to be introduced to gaming since princess peach or perhaps compared to a mentally ill assassin from Assassins Creed who needs nothing more than a good bath to sort him out.

I feel like you're mistaking TEW with the first person horror games of today, aka, Daylight, Outlast, Alien:Isolation, P.T. Its a TPS horror game, that does it right, unless what you want is Fatal Frame. To me a scary game doesnt make the player not have anything to fight back with, that gets annoying really fast, the entire game you're playing cat and mouse. Did you ever play RE1, RE2, RE4 (with the exceptions of the last few chapters) these are games that horror elements right.

Pretty spot on with the review. Survival-Horrorless

Bioshock 1 only has the intro though, would you kindly pick up that radio? :p

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter349d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch348d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.

gold_drake348d ago

Abnor_Mal348d ago
