Hands-On Preview: Sonic Boom – One of These Things is Not Like the Other | DualShockers

Allisa James from DualShockers writes:

"Nestled in a small, unassuming corner at New York Comic Con (NYCC) was a demo showing off Sonic Boom for both 3DS and Wii U. After the demo builds received nearly universal panning by critics and players alike at E3, I was curious to see what made these titles so hated. The results of my playthroughs were...mixed."

One thing kills the 3DS version for me. I like the graphics. I like the mechanics, like how Tails can throw bombs like in Tails Adventure on Game Gear and how Knuckles can drill. The thing that kills it for me is that each character has a homing attack. I don't like Sonic to have a home attack, but I could live with it. But EVERY character has a homing attack? That's not even plausible let alone fun to play.

I still don't understand why people are still looking forward to this game. Every new news I see on it just crushes my fond childhood memories even further. But then again, I'm from the generation where the last great sonic game was sonic and knuckles. Adventure was ok back in 1999 but it was the start of a trend that I think ruined future games. Gimmicks and to many useless characters.

Agree so much re last great Sonic game. They were pretty close with lost world. Level design, pacing and graphics were spot on but the gameplay was horrible. This game just looks like junk.

I'm hype for it and nothing will unhype me. Most of the complaints seem nitpicky and petty. The actual gameplay, the thing that matters, looks solid.

Nothing short of a Sonic 2 remaster will please some Sonic fans. Even then people would probably find some reason to whine. The game is fine.
