Joystiq: The Evil Within Review

"Evil Within just plain doesn't give you a fair chance to succeed. It doesn't provide enough information for you to make good decisions and it handicaps your ability to fight well. It requires so much repetition that it can't possibly maintain any sense of tension or unease, and its story is told so aimlessly that you'll likely forget the plot between scenes. It manages a few moments of inspiration, but their scarcity makes them feel like fortunate accidents rather than deliberate elements of the overall design. It's covered in blood, but the only thing truly horrifying about The Evil Within is how disappointing it is."

These are very legit complaints of true. Been craving a good horror game for ages, so hope not.

Well, this is quite the disparity between reviewers. Is this going to be an on-going trend this entire generation?

This game has been a bit funny for me: I wanted it, but the more I saw, the more concerns I had and ended up not pre-ordering. Then, IGN and other reviews dropped and it looked like a decent game. Now, Joystiq, with whom my personal interests on games often align with, suggests it's a game in need of considerable improvement.

I think I'll pass on it and wait for a price drop. Just got Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD collection for Vita from the Amazon sale anyway, so I'll be good. I'm always in the market for a great Vita game.

I hope this is a trend. Feels far more genuine than when reviewers all come out with the same feedback on a game.

It's almost like they don't know the "correct" and "acceptible" way to score the game, so they are actually trying to decide for themselves and whoa funny story, different people have different tastes.

In my line of work, I deal a lot with something called interrater reliability. Basically, it's important for people to come to similar conclusions for the sake of consistency. Variability is welcome, but when there's glaring disparity, that's usually a red flag that either the other raters missed or one rater potentially fabricated (accidentally in any other instance, but here it's a different concern).

Thing is, different opinions aren't what bother me, but when "experts" vary to such a high degree, it's a cause for concern.

Reviewers aren't experts though, they're just guys and gals writing up their opinions.

Whatever your line of work is probably has more quanitifiable and defined metrics for success?

Seen a guy on a stream run around a guy with a chainsaw and he did nothing. So far from what I've heard/seen, story is forgettable, AI is mediocre, and controls are a bit wonky. Does look to have some scare moments in there though. Worth a rent.

Are they trying to say the game is too difficult for

Volkama1887d ago

If the game is too hard then it warrants low scores doesn't it? If a player is unable to succeed in the game then they are not going to enjoy it, are they?

No what was I thinking, that's not how you play it cool in the nerd circle. Let me beat my chest and make sure people think I'm really good at playing computer games.

"Awwwww reviewer didn't like repeated dying, look at the wittle baby someone give him a lollypop"
