It wasn’t that long ago when everyone in the games industry would look to Japan for inspiration and if you were making a horror game the man you’d try to imitate would have been Shinji Mikami, creator of the survival horror genre. But it seems even the father of gaming horror needs some help every now an then.
The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.
An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.
I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.
Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.
PlayStation - The Concert is a magical musical experience for fans of the brand.
Two award-winning masterpieces, together in one incredible collection.
As expected. Unless it's going to Xbox or Switch 2, we can stop hearing about these older games now? We can move on to just news about new games?
This will be the 4th time Sony sells us The Last of Us Part 1.. And the 2nd time on the PS5.
Store says I already own it. I guess it’s just a straight twin-pack. Looks like they added 4 maps to ‘No Return’.
So what if he borrows from one of the best survival games of all time . They did the same with Resident Evil 4 . Either way thats good to hear.
"...throwing a glass bottle to distract enemies to lure them away mechanic. Something that was clearly popularised by The Last of Us."
Wha!? C'mon that is reeeeaching, there have been many games that used distractions as your character sneaks up on an enemy for a stealth game.
"and we believe Mikami is paying homage to Naughty Dog by using the mechanic."
Or maybe he's just using a mechanic that has been in these types of video games since forever.
It comes full circle then.
The Last of Us was inspired by Mikami's Gamecube masterpiece.
Although I doubt this was a specific borrowing, I think it's cool to see.
The more i read of said 'gaming journalism', the more I realise it is not journalism at all.
This writer must be really new to video gaming
