How 'Shadow of Mordor' taught me to respect my enemy, even in Middle-Earth

VGW's Will Harrison: This twist of the axis that is the player’s world view is caused by Mordor‘s Nemesis System. Meant to create structure and order to the typical endless enemy horde, the Nemesis System gives even the lowest peon a chance at something rarely seen in gaming: A chance–or at least the appearance–at agency.

i haven't played this game yet, but i've heard about the enemy rank system, and how it's dynamic based on your encounters with them. how they can remember you later in the game and evolve depending on how previous encounters happened. these are the types of "next gen" changes i want to see. not just minor graphical upgrades or slightly better framerates, but changes that affect how we play the game, how the game reacts to us, etc.

@miyamoto

The 360 version doesn't have the nemesis system....

UnHoly_One3911d ago (Edited 3911d ago )

It's really really good.

And the Nemesis system really adds a ton of fun.

I feel like I could just keep going around taking out the orc's chain of command forever and not even worry about doing the missions if I wanted to.

iDadio3911d ago

It's excellently paced aswell, just when you start to think what next after murdering your way up the enemy ranks you learn how to brand and it takes on a whole new angle.

Massively recommend it to anyone.

ceballos77mx3911d ago

Im enjoying turning bodyguards against their warchief, and doing the betrayal quests.

JamesBondage3911d ago

i'll buy it around the holidays when it's part of some steam super sale

DougLord3911d ago

Sorry, this is stupid! Btw I'm an uncoordinated 39 year old that doesn't play online because I don't have the coordination or eye sight anymore to survive.

I restarted last night just to see if the game's learning curve was as easy as I thought. I died just 2x in 2 hours, while unlocking every tier 1 talent, bumping my hp up 3x and getting 1 rune in every weapon. At this point I can take 2 captians and 20 orcs simultaneously. The only thing that f's me up is 1 or 2 Caregors jump me while fighting 2 captains and 20 orcs. Parry is INVINCIBLE. You get an execution every 5 hits or so. I often end up with a hit streak over 30 and I can 1 hit orcs and execute captains at will. Add Spirit stun + flurry and ground executions to the mix and the game is REALLY EASY. Both my deaths were to Caragores. It because they make you add "A" onto the mix of X, Y, LB+X, B+XXX, and Y+B. Stealth is also WAY to strong. If I up vs 5 Orcs I can stealth 1 hit 4 of them before they "find" me. And I can out run anything, and if I find an herb it heals me 100%. Or I can Scale any building, cliff or bridge knowing nothing can follow me. Game is AWESOME but it's EASY MODE.

iDadio3911d ago

It does eventually get trickier later when there's shield enemies and berserkers thrown in, that with the fact that some captains can just about 1 hit kill you.

But I take your general point, shame there's no difficulty setting.

VJGenova3911d ago

I just cleared the first area. Got the achievement of "power vacuum" wherby I killed all 5 warchiefs without one being replaced. In other words, since learning the basics of the game, I haven't died. There should totally be a difficulty setting in this game.

shield uruks - jump over and flurry kill.
berserkers - charge up hit strike and execute.

Only time I've had trouble is when 3 unique uruks fight me at the same time. I've been better about drawing out one when that happens though.

EyePawd3911d ago (Edited 3911d ago )

Honestly, I think games can be more than just about degree of difficulty. I acknowledge that the game isn't terribly difficult. However, I'm more than willing to forgive degree of difficulty for a unique experience.

I also wouldn't be shocked if something harder gets added in the season pass.

Honestly, just a fantastic game/series (aside from the blunder of Microtransactions/grinding). The system with the orcs was amazing.. which it would be implemented in more games.

IAMRealHooman267d ago

Supposed to be working on a wonder woman game with the nemesis system

CosmicTurtle267d ago

They patented the system, sadly. What that means legally I am not sure. But people don’t want to test the water.

Shadow of Mordor > Shadow of War

Abnor_Mal267d ago

I loved Mordor, while War I stopped playing half way through.

Flewid638267d ago (Edited 267d ago )

I feel you bro. The experience got better once I tried it on PC, but I'm still probably only going to finish the Galadriel DLC and not the main campaign.

ravens52267d ago

Me too lol. I beat Mordor, never beat War lol. I have it though so I could always go back and play it. I genuinely think the time will come that I can beat my backlog. Maybe when I hit the lotto and can just play video games all day, on my yacht.

Luc20267d ago

Such a good game. Also a fairy easy platinum.

Juiceid267d ago

Now THIS is a game I’d like to see a remake of!

glennhkboy267d ago

This game convinced me to buy a new console. There was a huge difference between the previous gen (Xbox360/ PS3) & the latest gen (Xbox One/ PS4) . The Nemesis System was only available in Xbox One/ PS4 . That was how a generation shift should be.

10 Open-World Games That Feel Empty After Just A Few Hours

Unfortunately, the open worlds in games like Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Halo Infinite, and the original Assassin's Creed do more harm than good.

MadLad723d ago

I legitimately loved Halo's switch to open world. They made traversal of the map entertaining, and everything involved just tied into the (what I consider) awesome gunplay.
The entire time I really felt the slow takeover of the map, and all the little steps forward felt satisfying.

I don't know what more people really want there, considering the setting and story. A handful of soldiers hunkered down on enemy territory; slowly trying to win the battle.

giovonni722d ago

I agree I liked the switch to the open world, it was large with beautiful land scapes. However, it did feel a bit empty, and wasn’t as action packed as I would have liked. A lot of the bases felt like fillers instead of something of wonder. Let’s see what 343 under new management does from here cause Halo needs some updating

archibold722d ago (Edited 722d ago )

I'm surprised they scrapped the Slipspace engine. I thought the graphics looked great, the sandbox physics were as good as ever, and the AI worked well. Clearly a lot of work went into it and it appears to have been optimized for the new generation of GPUs. The only issue I had with it was the lack of environments, would have been cool to have different biomes on the ring to explore. A bit more variety in missions would have been nice, maybe some timed events where you have to manuever a banshee through forerunner architecture or some mongoose speedruns would have spiced things up.

CrimsonWing69722d ago

I think R* are the only ones who have made compelling open worlds. I can’t stomach most open world games and how boring they are with busy world. It’s like a flex to make this massive environment, but it’s extremely boring to traverse and play in. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 blew me away with how incredible their worlds were. Elden Ring was the only other game to give me that sense of awe.

giovonni722d ago

GTA V and unfortunately, Saints Row the original have had some of the most aggressive open world features where the world doesn’t feel so bland. To me what makes GTA V so special is the way the characters react to the world around them vs how the world reacts to them. For example, in GTA when you switch to Franklin and he walked past an attractive female he responded “ damn you fine” or in Saints row you can run up in the pawn shop flash a gun and watch them respond by raising their hands in the air, or they press the silent alarm making you have to run away from the cops. Halo infinite doesn’t have those kind of moments that make you feel apart of the world it just feels like it’s there.

bloop721d ago

Trevor talking to random vegan npc: "You suck c*ck, but you don't eat meat.... It don't make sense to me "

Classic. Such a shame we won't get that humour again now that R* have gone all in on virtue.

Abear21722d ago

AC Odyssey with the next gen patch is pretty incredible, especially if you like a sea shantie. Lol.

Abear21722d ago

I’m back on an open world kick after Horizon. I don’t know what clicked in me but exploring the map and seeing the detail work has me loving open worlds again. Playing AC Odyssey on hard and really enjoying it and the map. Reinstalling RDR2 tonight because damn, that map is just incredible for sightseeing.

Sonic1881722d ago

Halo Infinite felt off. It's like the developers didn't know what they really wanted to do

Demetrius722d ago

Depends on which open world titles u play, most of em are shitty AF, but I honestly admire open world genre, sometimes to just take a break from fighting and missions you explore n see details you haven't noticed before cause you were too busy body at first, then boom finding some dope equipment or things to sale
