On the Xbox One you can have next-gen graphics or next-gen gameplay – not both

Extreme Tech: We’re nearly one year into the Xbox One’s lifespan, and major exclusive titles are still being released at sub-1080p resolutions. Despite the fact that some cross-generation games like Destiny and Diablo III can run at full 1080p on Microsoft’s latest console, many big-name Xbox One titles still can’t hit that resolution without significantly compromising another aspect of the game. Even with the recent 10% GPU boost, Insomniac’s Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive is only going to hit 900p (1600×900) at 30 frames per second. Frankly, this doesn’t bode well for the Xbox One’s longevity.

Wth? So 1080p = next gen graphics? Does that mean all 1080p games automatically look better than all 900p or even 720p games?and what exactly would the author define as next gen gameplay - Ryse? Knack?infamous?Titanfall? Shadow of mordor? Assasins creed?Dragon Age? Witcher? Division? COD?BF? When it comes to gameplay, basically every game tries to improve on what's already out there and in all honesty indies have been doing a far better job at inovating gameplay than AA devs this gen.. also isnt Ryse 900p?yet it looks great, even on high end PC where power is almost unlimited you still get basically the same gameplay.so can the same argument be used for pc?.how can a platform be blamed for not delivering on gameplay&graphics?lmao..ev en in the graphics department the xbox one is capable of holding its own. The resources are all there to be used and its up to developers to decide what they want to do with it and same goes for every other platform out there.

“On xbox one you can't have nextgen gameplay&graphics, you can only have one”??..lmao. How do these guys come up with this BS?

This article is a joke imo..there are so many things plaguing this industry at the moment,if only you would try to broaden your perspective...next time try putting more effort into your write ups instead of these flamebait articles.

DarkOcelet3913d ago

Ahahaha that is so funny . We shall see great graphics and awesome gameplay on both Gears 4 , Halo 5 and Quantum Break . Seriously people need to enjoy life more and stop nipticking everything . We get it , Xone might not have the best resolution that we hoped for but great games still to come and the devs will work hard to deliver the best for us with what they have and we are still in Year 1 . Look at how the 360 evolved over time and the same will happen here . Just be cool everyone and like i said . Enjoy life more . :)

Gazondaily3913d ago

Didn't Forza Horizon 2 prove that it has great visuals and great gameplay?

bouzebbal3913d ago

this article is full of s***...
even though there is not a single x1 game i am jealous of atm, i am sure they will be able to accomplish that with an upcoming game.

Volkama3913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

Forza Horizon 2 is actually a really interesting technical achievement. Ignoring the competition and fanboy wars (if people are capable of that), and ignoring the aethetics and overall quality of the game, horizon 2 is outputting 1080p with 4xMSAA and FXAA.

MSAA is very rarely used across the next gen consoles. It is not a post processing effect (as almost every console game thus far employs), it is part of the rendering pipeline and goes into the frame buffer. It is demanding in ways the XBox One should really struggle with.

We've all read about the 32mb ESRAM, and the difficulty of fitting a 1080p frame in there. Playground are doing it with 4xMSAA. I would be very curious to know how they are achieving so much more than everyone else working with the console in those raw frame buffer terms.

And on-topic: How are we defining next-gen gameplay?

donthate3913d ago

volkama:

"And on-topic: How are we defining next-gen gameplay?"

Obviously there are too many genres to even say what is next-gen game play without delving into the details, but we clearly see a huge shift already.

Open world, massive on screen enemies and more free movement ala Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall (for shooters at least). When you play something like Destiny, it most definitely feels last generation with so limited movement despite being a stellar game mechanic even by todays standard.

UltraNova3913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

@Volkama

You have 'next gen gameplay' when a new game(irrespective if its on current or older systems) makes such a profound improvement over similar genre games that its considered game changing.

Similarly when a new game establishes a never before seen gameplay mechanic that actually works. To a greater extend, it can even allow for a new sub-genre to be created.

Example: Back in 1991 Carmack released the worlds first FPS game, Catacomb 3-D. For people back in 1991 that was true next gen game-play.

darthv723913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

There were games that were 1080p on the 360 and PS3 so really resolution is just a number. 1080 last gen is the same as 1080 this gen.

Its what you do within those lines that matters most. We are seeing much more attention to detail in lighting, shadows, textures, reflections that are much better than previous.

If the idea of the game design is to increase the detail of the surrounding area and all the little things you generally did not pay attention to before.........then the sacrifice of something like the resolution can be warranted. It all depends on the game.

Resolution does not make a game fun to play. Now here is a good question. We have known for generations that when system specs are released they talk about cpu speed and memory and the number of colors/sprites on screen and resolutions supported (by the system).

Who was the first (and what game) that publicly started the trend of revealing the resolution of a game in development?

I consider that the biggest blunder in gaming history because all that did was lead us to this moment and will continue the downward spiral of things to come.

Didn't troll articles like this come out about the 360, 9 years ago?

It's funny how some forget that numerous other games on other consoles have failed to hit native 1080p or had to be downgraded to hit 60fps, KIllZone's lawsuit says "Hello"

What really leads to longevity is great games, like Forza Horizon 2, great gamesplay, great graphics, dynamic lighting, day/night cycles, etc, etc

vikingland13913d ago

I have to agree with you about Forza Horizon 2. And I would ad that FH2 can't be done on 360. The XB1 v.s. 360 FH2 proves XB1 is a powerfull console. It has gameplay and graphics.

Nekroo913913d ago

Killzone sp was native 1080p mp isnt. The same way Halo MCC isnt 1080p in sp.

guyman3913d ago

Nice punch throwing at killzone, even though that was a ridiculous lawsuit. The single player was still native 1080p and the multiplayer up-scaled to 1080p. Funny thing is, is the graphics are still at a high fidelity.

Cant really say the same about forza horizon- which is an example of: "or had to be downgraded to hit 60fps".

Bigpappy3913d ago

This is just a stupid Xbox attack. I try to ignore these opinion article. 90% of them have an agenda. This guy obviously thinks his purpose for living it to come up with anti-Xbox slander.

He make a claim with nothing to support it. What is he really trying to say. The game that are 1080p on X1lack next Gen gameplay? Destiny doesn't have as goo gameplay as Ryse or thief? Makes no sense whatsoever.

VealParmHero3913d ago

Couldn't agree more. So fat, the only graphical gaps we have seen are res, and in some cases, framerate. While both are important to a certain degree, trying to say that running beautiful games at a lower resolution is some how not next gen is just ridiculous. This article is just sad.

Look at some of the games so far, and some of what is to come. And many of the prettier titles so far do not really define "next-gen gameplay", because many of them do nothing new. I wish articles like this would just go away for good.

Lol fail clickbait.

3913d ago
christocolus3913d ago

My point exactly..I wonder how the author defines next gen gameplay?we already know he uses 1080p as his yardstick for graphics.its funny cos resolution aint same thing as graphics. I guess he doesn't know that.

All_Consoles3913d ago

I love the art style they chose with sunset overdrive. Art style > resolution

Guwapo773913d ago

Exactly what the article is saying...you should NOT have to choose... I don't understand why this is so hard to understand. Have your cake and eat it too. 1080p TVs been out for over a decade. 1080p is the standard for this generation if you want it to be or not. Defend this BS and next generation they will do something else to short change their system. Last gen was the DVD drive. This gen is their weak ass system.

GodGinrai3913d ago

High def textures and effects do NOT make for nextgen gameplay, only supplement the experience. This article is DUMB! Drivatars...server side based AI..cloud based physics processing (crackdown) are Next gen GAMEPLAY features. You dont need 1080P to do that stuff..just a new way of thinking. That is what "next gen" is all about. New concepts that could not be done on previous hardware. look at all these HD remakes of last gen games, that are popping up (TLOU, sleeping dogs, tomb raider etc..) are they suddenly "next gen gameplay" because they run @ 1080P? such a shallow perception of what "next gen" means...

falviousuk3913d ago

N4G which is full of ps4 fanboys is the perfect place for click bait articles like this to hit on the xbox. It gets them hits from sony fanboys looking to attack the xbox so they visit the site.

Lame articles like this need to go away, gutter news posts are not helping the gaming industry one bit

DeadlyOreo3913d ago

Actually, majority seem to be Xbox One fanboys now, take a look around. Xbox One rarely gets attacked, it has had mostly positive articles and user comments on here for a while. Stop pretending there's a problem when there isn't.

Gazondaily3913d ago

Maybe in the last few days (which is kinda weird). But that's only because many people from the 'other crowd' are putting their heads in the sand after the DC fiasco.

Ausbo3913d ago

There's plenty of hate going on about the Xbox right now. The whole AC unity fiasco has tons ripping on Microsoft thinking they paid for parity.

IrishSt0ner3913d ago

So it's Xbox One fanboys now because for the past few days we have had some good news stories, and relevant discussions.

Don't worry, it'll not be long before another anti-xbox article appears that shoots up to max degrees with hundreds of comments.

When I started here I thought I was doing something wrong with the clearly disproportionate number of disagrees I was getting, doesn't take long to catch on why.

cruzngta3913d ago

anything less than 720p isnt HD so as long as it hits at least 720p I am ok with that for the Bone. 1080p would be nice but lets be realistic - not every game for the Bone is gonna hit that. If I am MS I would push for 60fps due to the fact that rez seems a bit more tricky for them. 720/60 or 900/60 looks nice anyway.

slasaru013913d ago

You don't need to chase 60fps. Games look the same like shot with it. Look at Wolfenstein and Metro, Tomb Raider - all the same oversharp and dead lighting and look like photo and clones.

30fps allows more graphics NOW

Sunset Overdrive PS5 Port Ruled Out In Favor of Wolverine

Sunset Overdrive was great...

I quite enjoyed the Demons' Souls remake too. I'm more or less begging for a Bloodborne sequel but would snap up a remake in a heartbeat.

Concertoine365d ago

I’d rather play an older unique game than a new Marvel game.

Im so blown out on Marvel, I can’t fathom how some people seem to have a bottomless appetite for it. A studio like Insomniac could do way better.

just_looken365d ago

Yep those poor devs are now a marvel sweat camp

This port and a quick pc patch to fix some bugs would have been a great idea i actualy forgot its not on ps5 you think it would have by now.

But hey they got like you said spiderman 2 pc port then spiderman 3 then spiderman collection with a wolverne/blade tossed in.

Amplitude365d ago

From everything we've seen, it's not like Insomniac is being forced to make Marvel games - it's clearly a good partnership that results in good games. They're still making Ratchet games anyway which is what really matters

Redemption-64365d ago

I have no idea why people like you keep making lies. Does it help you sleep at night? Where are you getting this information that they are either being forced or made into a Marvel camp? Sony approach Insomniac when they were independent to work on a Marvel IP and they picked Spider-Man. After the success of Spider-Man, it was Insomniac who pitched Wolverine to Sony/Marvel and was given the green light

-Foxtrot366d ago

This is new…it pretty much confirms it can happen eventually.

I thought Microsoft had publishing rights or something

Eonjay366d ago

Yes you are right. Microsoft allegedly has rights to the first game. Perhaps Microsoft wasted to sell it back to Sony in exchange for a port to Xbox Series. This would make the statement make more sense because I can't imagine that a port of this game even compares to the creation of Wolverine. So Microsoft probably requested a multiplat port.

gold_drake365d ago

yeh, the article says as much that MS does have publishing rights.

Profchaos365d ago

They do but Microsoft doesn't really care about the game they are considering Halo 1 for ps5 so this would be nothing

badz149365d ago

MS doesn't just have the publishing rights for SSoD, they also have publishing rights for the next 2 games in the franchise!

Zeke68365d ago

" The game was later pitched to various publishers, which rejected them because Insomniac demanded to retain ownership of the intellectual property. The project was later pitched to Microsoft Studios, which was eager to work with Insomniac. Microsoft allowed Insomniac to own the rights to the game"

Seems Insomniac own the rights after all...

badz149365d ago

@Zeke68

publishing rights is not the same as IP rights or ownership. for SSoD, Insomniac owns the IP, MS owns the publishing rights. just like Sony with Spider-man. Sony only owns the publishing rights to the movies and games but the IP is still owned by Marvel/Disney.

Zeke68365d ago

See my comment below. When Insomniac left M$ they let Microsoft keep their publishing rights for... drumroll... Xbox and PC.
If they want to release it on PS they can let Sony publish it.

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack448d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher448d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack448d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher448d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack448d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher448d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz149447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander1972447d ago

fr0sty447d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref448d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher448d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman448d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood448d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

Things happen.

Christopher447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

Obscure_Observer448d ago

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

PhillyDonJawn448d ago

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

PrinceOfAnger448d ago

Very fun game that need a sequel.

-Foxtrot448d ago

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

Tacoboto448d ago

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Christopher448d ago

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

darthv72448d ago

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

badz149447d ago

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv72448d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.
