Unity in talks to sell - Report

Blizzard created Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, which has become one of its most popular titles. That success is due to how easy it is to use on both PCs and tablets, a big accomplishment for Blizzard since Hearthstone was its first-ever game for mobile devices. Much of the credit goes to Unity's tools, which make it easier to create games that work across devices, said Jason Chayes, who headed up production for Hearthstone.

It will probably get bought by either Google, Amazon, or Microsoft. I'm thinking mostly Microsoft because of their strong push towards mobile.

OpieWinston3538d ago

Given Microsofts Unity partnership, I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet. Also considering Satya is comitted to pushing Windows Phone and Surface, and having a strong games engine like Unity for it would make game development for Windows mobile more friendly.

Microsoft does have a deep pocket with their offshores cash. Mojang acquisition only put a small dent in it.

Zeref3538d ago

Lets just hope its not Google.

CerealKiller3538d ago

Its impossible to say because they are a private company so we don't get to see their financials but the article mentions a possible asking price of $2 billion.

Yetter3538d ago

so MS is going to own unity too? I know this isn't confirmed but it certainly is my guess. Could actually be good for unity. Its a spectacular engine and visual studios is a great developing environment. They could grow from each other

The_Blue3538d ago

I hope its after they release Unity 5.

The more I see Microsoft buying things-or may be buying things, like this, the more I am sure they are preparing to evolve past a console xbox and make it into a platform ala steam. I think they are seriously preparing for an evolution.

Exclusive: Unity Software cutting 25% of staff in ‘company reset’ continuation

Jan 8 (Reuters) - Videogame software provider Unity Software (U.N) will target laying off approximately 25% of its workforce, or 1,800 jobs, the company said in a regulatory filing and internal company memo on Monday.

anast159d ago

They wanted everyone to move to Unreal 5 and GoDot 4.

UltimateOwnage159d ago

What a waste. And despite all of this cut and slash, their polices are doubling down on what led to all of this. They have committed themselves to bring a losing brand going forward. Good riddance. Maybe Microsoft will buy them out, they seem to have a lot in common.

Ubi is soft and there executive group is trash

BeHunted200d ago

This has nothing to do with Ubisoft

shadowknight203200d ago

The percentage is lower compared to recent layoffs we been hearing. But still 265 jobs is quite a number.

Chocoburger200d ago

The executives make obviously terrible decisions, then their profits drop, and it's the work force that suffers because of it.

recoctimocassirnff200d ago

Exactly. It's never the idiot executives that suffer the consequences of their idiot actions, it's always the talented people that actually make the product.

Chocoburger200d ago

Indeed, imagine being a good employee, then losing your job because the executives screw things up while also paying themselves yearly bonuses.

Disgusting.

FinalFantasyFanatic199d ago

It really should be the executives that get their pay docked or miss out on bonuses for shockingly bad decisions, it's absolute BS that it doesn't ever happen (and then they blame everyone but themselves).

Unity has announced a round of layoffs and the closure of Weta Digital, after it decided to end its agreement with Peter Jackson's Weta FX. The layoffs will impact 265 employees, a total of 3.8% of its workforce, Reuters reports.

Back in December 2021, Unity acquired a part of Peter Jackson's Weta Digital, including "Weta Digital's tools, pipeline, technology, and engineering talent" in a deal worth $1.625 billion. The remainder of Weta Digital remained under Jackson's ownership and rebranded to Weta FX, with the company maintaining an agreement to use Weta Digital's tools and services.

Now, Unity says it has terminated the professional services part of this agreement, which will result in the layoffs of 265 employees involved in the agreement. Weta FX issued a statement to FX Guide, saying it would be looking to re-hire as much of the Weta Digital team as possible. Unity will retain ownership of the tools it acquired, and they will remain readily available for Weta FX to use.

I worked at Unity, super smart...super woke. John was a piece of old school work...how he survived so long is a mystery.

How about the death of E3? That used to be one of the year's gaming highlights, now gone.
