Gamespot Review: Driveclub

Driveclub is ordinary menus and ordinary races, standard time trials, and a few drift events. Driveclub is bland social competition. Driveclub is the fear of risks and the embrace of the ordinary. It's basic racing in basic packaging, beautiful and inert and full of attractive cars. It is not, however, an argument for a new generation of driving, given how it fails to exceed the standards of the old one.

Giving it a 5 is way too harsh, just like giving Destiny a 6 was. I always thought that Gamespot reviews were off for some reason.

-Alpha3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

^ I think people are surprised when reviews use the whole 1-10 range. Games like Destiny definitely deserve their 6/10.

Some games just look really good and have a lot of polish, which makes people think that they are too good to be scored low, but that should never be the case. There's the saying about a polished turd still being a turd, and I was actually happy to see reviewers not give Destiny the pass just because it was a Bungie game/big title. If your game lacks the heart and content and ends up being repetitive, which Destiny was, you're going to get called out for it.

I actually really love Kevin's reviews on Gamespot. He is very critical but reviews games really well. His Destiny review was very well written and brought up excellent points about the game

It seems the big thing he had with Driveclub was that it was much too standard, which is a complaint I fully expected to see. I didn't expect it to be so standard as to get a 5/10, and I think it's harsh too, but I'm not surprised with the complaints of the game.

There are also some things that Evo didn't get in the game before release, like weather and private lobbies, which unfortunately can't be reviewed if they are not there. I wonder if scores would be overall higher if the weather was included on day one

llMurcielagoll3479d ago

I check gamespot reviews to read the good the bad parts and see if it makes any sense to me or not.

Gamespot seems always pessimistic for example.

GTA V
IGN: 10
Gamespot: 9

Driveclub
IGN: 7
Gamespot:5

Watch Dogs
IGN: 8.4
Gamespot: 8

Uncharted Drake's fortune
IGN: 9.1
Gamespot: 8

This is just an example of searching a title name on these two websites alone.

My opinion, gamespot make pretty valid points with their reviews but some others are down right stupid for me.

-Alpha3479d ago

^ It's funny that you use IGN, who I find tend to review games way too high. None of those Gamespot scores are "pessimistic".

Using just one website to compare it to does not really make much sense, as you are only proving that IGN scores games higher than Gamespot.

7's and 8's are not bad scores, and IGN I find, throws around 9's way too easily. I don't see how any of those scores from Gamespot are "Stupid"

SilentNegotiator3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

They spend a PARAGRAPH complaining that collisions and going off road slow you down. -_-

I knew certain review sites would say ANYTHING to give not-Forza a negative review.

-Alpha3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

@Negotiator

Wrong. You are only telling half the truth and twisting it to imply that they are whining without cause.

The complaint is about A.I, not collisions:

"AI vehicles prefer collisions to deviations from the line, often smashing into you from behind and sending you careening into the vehicle in front of you, or sliding onto the shoulder, simply because you took the path most appropriate for your car."

"should a collision be too violent, the game penalizes you by temporarily capping your top speed, slowing you down for several crucial seconds. In Driveclub, there is nothing more frustrating than a collision that is clearly not your fault"

If you are aiming for some conspiracy theory against Driveclub, at least make it a good one.

theshonen88993479d ago

Gamespot uses 5/10 as average while most sites use 7.5/10 as an average in an effort to mimic school grades. Alien Colonial Marines got a 4.5 and Duke Nukem Forever got a 3. This is why their scores seem lower than other sites.

SilentNegotiator3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

@Alpha

Too bad the AI isn't as static as in Forza, right? There should be ZERO collisions if they aren't your fault entirely. /s

-Alpha3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

@Silence

Wow, what a false equivalence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Thanks for avoiding what I said: you initially purposely misconstrued what was being complained about, and then your best response is "but, but Forza"? Get the desperate conspiracy theory justifications out of your head when you have no evidence other than jealousy here.

This is not the only review that notes A.I is overly aggressive and instead of racing past you, they frequently try to bump you off the road. This is not what realistically is supposed to happen in races like this that try to emulate the real life experience of racing on tracks such as this. Blocking lanes, and outracing your opponents by drifting, cornering, and making better turns is how these races go down, not bumping into each other and ramming people off the road.

You continue to twist the complaint being made. if it's often the case that the A.I chooses to ram you off the road to get ahead, and when you get penalized for collisions for driving "simply because you took the path most appropriate for your car", then a complaint about A.I forcing collisions is not hard to understand.

Instead, you decide to report that they complain about collisions, as if they are making excuses for driving poorly, then try to lazily act as if it was done to keep scores lower than Forza. That's just incredibly childish.

zero_gamer3479d ago

My hopes aren't all that crushed, just not dropping 60 dollars. I'll try the PS+ version though.

BitbyDeath3479d ago

Oh well, back to Motorstorm... Please

llMurcielagoll3479d ago

-Alpha

Firstly, you are making it sound like I favor IGN over Gamespot because of score numbers.

Perhaps you're right that I should do proper research and check Gamespot's scores against 1 or more reviewers as well. This is just an example I am sharing that may or may not be valid.

Lastly, I am referring specifically to the verdict pointers of Gamespot reviews in which some make sense to me as an individual and some others don't. You have misunderstood my statement.

TheFanboySlayer3479d ago

Damn I'm pretty surprised.....I just got the vibe that the reviewer was frustrated with the game. So far it's fun to me....very steep learning curve though. You either get it or you don't.

dillydadally3478d ago

@Bloodborn If you look at what a 5 on Gamespot's scale means, it's labeled "Mediocre" - in other words, not "bad" like a 5 means at many other sites, but average.

Reading the review, the main argument and central theme was the is just too mediocre and does nothing special and nothing past the bare minimum. To me, a 5 sounds like the most accurate score for a game on Gamespot's scale.

guitarded773478d ago

If it had pedophilia anime in it, GameSpot would have went 10/10. I find it interesting when they call something bland when the GS crew are the most bland group of gaming "journalists"out there. Their voices put you to sleep, but they're pretentious enough to keep you awake on pure hate. I imagine they all have beards, wear fedoras and use Apple products.

WombBat3478d ago

@septic

as a destiny owner on ps4, the review scores are justified. a 6 isnt bad its above average. Its time we get the scaling system back to normal and in perspective. 10 is a game that has generational lasting value, and a 6 is a game you get if your a fan of the style of game

Concertoine3479d ago

If these reviews are right, this game was not worth the wait.
Big if.

SuperLupe3479d ago

And Evolution had the nerve to quote "The Forza Killer" in their trailer.

RIP Driveclub : October 2014 - October 2014

-Alpha3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

The "Forza Killer" thing was definitely uncalled for, even if they weren't the ones to say it. Quoting it just attracts unwanted attention and comparison, and they have to eat their words. Live by the media, die by the media.

I'm guessing the game would have scored a lot higher if it came out at launch, when most games were more leniently reviewed.

I'm a bit upset that the weather, replay, private lobbies, and photo mode aren't already in the game. I know the weather is unlike anything we've seen, but I feel like if it was included in the reviews, the scores may have been bumped up a bit. It's too bad that they couldn't get that in on time.

Dark113479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

Yeah no surprise.

Definitely a rent.

mcarsehat3479d ago

It's shocking with the amount of people (even people that don't like racing games) that want this game.

It's a racing game, i've always hated them so i'm not really bothered by this review score but this article will get about 1000' heat on this site.

(By people doing the same thing as me and butting in lol)

Palitera3479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

^ yeah, sure, i want it too, after all, it is free.

Charge me 1 dollar and I don't even think about buying it.

I just wonder when (if, actually) will people wake up. The incredibly naive gamers are being fooled by marketing over and over again, thinking every game will be what the salesmen promise. Yet, they still are doing it.

Next stops: AC, CoD and Evolve.

Damn, it is so obvious...

MeliMel3479d ago

Rent? Its free with PS+....

DarkSniper3478d ago

There are many that are surprised that Driveclub is nothing more than a mediocre, run of the mill racing game. Dark Sniper isn't. With multiple delays, Sony's poor selection in first party investments, and the fact that this was an IP that nobody asked for, Driveclub is another waste of money for Sony. The funding this game recieved could have been used for Gran Turismo 7.

Decisions like this is exactly why Sony is in the financial crisis they are in now. Because of the release of this mediocre game, its highly likely that Evolution Studios will close up shop. Which means there will be no more Motorstorm ever again.

If Sony continues to make mistakes like this, it is a very realistic possibility that we may not even get to see a PlayStation 5.

$niper

rainslacker3478d ago

@Sniper

I believe that Sony's willingness to take risks on new IP's is what makes their PS brand so strong. Last gen, despite being an afterthought for 3rd party multi-plats more often than not, they still managed to deliver a compelling experience with their own new IP's which always offered fresh content.

Sony themselves said that not all their new IP's made money, in fact less than half did. Yet the PS division is one of the few profitable divisions within Sony, so I don't think they're doing anything wrong other than not maximizing potential profit by releasing the same old IP's over and over again and not taking risks which could potentially bring them great success.

I don't know about you, but as a gamer, I would prefer Sony take the risks, and occasionally get an average game with a whole lot of awesome games mixed in.

Anyhow, I'm sure GT7 has it's own budget, and is likely already in the works since that's all Polyphony Digital does. The money poured into DC would have no effect on that. I could see that it could have been used on a different genre game, but perhaps Sony felt they needed a more diverse driving game line up.

Grap3479d ago

Forza killer yah right...

Gardenia3478d ago

Who said it was a Forza killer? If you want to compare Forza with a game it should be Gran Turismo. Driveclub is a different kind of race game

Grap3478d ago

Tell that to VG247 and the one who made that stupid trailer.

purpleblau3479d ago

Who is gonna believe that rating anyway. Just ignore it.

Torque_CS_Lewith3479d ago

My suspicions for the review embargo have been vindicated!

MeliMel3479d ago

Hey, you called it. Alot of low scores for DC. Gotta give credit, you never backed off your initial thoughts on the game.

rainslacker3478d ago

Almost every game, good or bad gets an embargo nowadays. Honestly, even before this review I felt it was coming down more to reviews that are just too low for some of the games they are reviewing. It goes both ways with embargos unfortunately, so saying an embargo indicates a bad game just isn't sound reasoning anymore.

wsoutlaw873479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

A 5 seems very low and far from a lot of the other scores. Its a racing game where everyone seems to like the driving so I would imagine it being better than a 5. But I couldn't care less about a racing game. They also gave infamous a very low score but ghosts an 8 and acbf a 9 so i don't really agree with any of their reviews anymore.

bleedsoe9mm3479d ago

we all knew there was a really good chance this game was pretty but shallow and boring , a mile wide and an inch deep

Blaze9293479d ago (Edited 3479d ago )

we all saw this coming. let's be real, they only kept talking about graphics the entire development cycle.

Magicite3479d ago

this..was..unexpected.
But be honest I think GS are too harsh at times.
Well, at least the game is free, so people can try it before buying full version.

VealParmHero3479d ago

I don't wanna sound like that guy..but I almost saw this coming. It's not that I thought DC would be bad, it's just that I felt Sony PR put way too much hype around it. They practically acted as if a new Grand Tourismo was coming out. Yes, it is quite a showcase for the power of the system, but looks ain't everything. I just kinda had a feeling this game was not gonna be anything more than an ordinary racer, even if its looks say otherwise.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv7294d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8594d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197294d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218393d ago (Edited 93d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim94d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno94d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218393d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 93d ago
Chocoburger94d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai94d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC94d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
