Super Mario 64 Is Not the Best Video Game of All Time (But Don’t Tell 1996 That)

Retrovolve: The September, 1996 issue of Next Generation magazine’s cover story was a list of the top 100 games of all time, which they promised would be “extremely controversial.” And perhaps it was, with the number one spot devoted to Super Mario 64.

Almost two decades later, that seems a tad bit unreasonable. Don’t get me wrong, Super Mario 64 is one of the most important games of the 1990s, and it absolutely deserves to be on a top 100 list. But the number one spot?

Maybe not the best, but certainly one of the most important, and iconic!

Definitely a great, fun game and way ahead of its time. You can still play this game and have a great time.

It's the last time any game TRULY changed the Video Game Industry.

There have been other games that have come kind of close, but none like Mario 64.

* That and it was a launch game that was, quality wise, better than pretty much anything that came after it on the N64.

* Mario 64 showed us what games could be like, and showed us the new direction games would be heading.

007, also a game changer, from multi-player to mission design.

All those games have, but not at the same level that Mario 64 did.

Goldeneye was possible....because Mario 64 worked so well, which then lead to FPS games working well, which lead to Halo & COD and such...

It really wasn't all that great. I couldn't get into it as a kid because of the macanics and it really doesn't hold up but it was a successful 3D platformer and we would have Mario today without it.

I agree completely, I remember when it launched I was very disappointed compared to its 2d counter parts it was just bad imo those games are still classic while this game has aged horribly.

Still have tons of memories getting my 64 and playing that game every day when I got home from school. Best ever? I don't know, but I remember how open and deep the game felt at the time.

Plus flying Mario? GG.

I absolutely loved this game! No matter how many times i died, I kept on going. To this day, i could still turn my 64 back on and have a blast with this game.
