Allisa James from DualShockers finds really obscure Japanese indie games and writes about them.
This month she covers an RPG Maker title called Ao Oni, about four teenagers -- Hiroshi the protagonist, Takuro, Takeshi and Mika -- who wander into an abandoned and supposedly haunted mansion in order to investigate.
Shortly after entering the mansion, the doors lock behind the quartet. Hiroshi at first doubts that the mansion is haunted, but soon finds himself being pursued by an enigmatic blue Oni and must now find a way to save as many of his friends as possible and escape the mansion alive.
Stephanie Watson writes: "Video games may not be the only culprit of this offensive trope, but they have always been especially guilty. It's pretty difficult to name games that don't use the “mental illness is scary” trope, even though it's so easy to scare your player without it. What games can you play this Halloween that don't poke fun at the “dark side” of mental illness? I'm glad you asked!"
What an awful website.
These games aren't making fun of mental illness. What planet is this author from?
It has recently been announced that there will be a film adaptation of the free online horror game Ao Oni. AKB48 member Anna Iriyama (pictured) will be making her acting debut by starring in the film.
