Who Are the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Consumers and What Are the Differences in the Video Game Industry Consumers?

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 continue to be amongst the most popular video game consoles, so taking an in-depth look at the consumers who purchase these consoles is beneficial to any company looking to tap into the video game market.

Experian Consumer Research recently found while differences exist between these gamers and the general consumer population, there are also differences between consumers who bought Xbox 360 and those who bought PlayStation 3. One such difference is the age range of consumers who purchase the consoles, with PlayStation appealing to an older crowd and Xbox being favored amongst younger gamers. Since all gamers in general are not identical in their preferences, awareness of these differences in the consumer population is important when trying to reach specific consumers through video games. Similarities between the two consumer populations have also been found, such as comparable media preferences.

The problem -

Ps3 appeals to an older crowd. That crowd tends to have the money, but also tend to have a lot of responsibility and diversions in life. These add up to casual gamers which is bad for Sony's bulk users.

Xbox 360 appeals to younger crowds. These crowds don't have money a lot of times. they're in school, work fast food and tend to get games from their parents or during holidays and birthdays. this is also bad because their are often lulls in seasons where few games are sold.

the winner is the one who can balance both into one.

Bellic Jr3775d ago

you made a pretty valid distinction between the 2.

Pornlord3775d ago

That's a good point, I think another factor is that, as for me, I'm a huge tech head, therefore I tend to prefer the PS3 because of Bluetooth headsets and Blu-ray. Being HDMI no matter which one you buy. Always having HD space. Another thing with the age difference they used, is that younger gamers are gonna be more social on the norm. I don't like playing online, I don't use my headset much because when I get home from work, get done walking or playing disc golf, I just kinda wanna sit alone with some good sipping whiskey or scotch and play some games. I don't wanna be bothered with the kids or the screaming or the cussing. The only person cussing should be me, at the screen :) Just my opinion.

darthv723774d ago

You make a good point there Silo. I am older now (36) and i have more responsibilities especially with my kids. I like the fact they enjoy the roots of gaming as I did. I do not have a ps3 yet as the cost exceeds my personal spending limit for a console.

I do have every other system released up to this generation including both the 360 and Wii. The price for my hobby is much greater now than it was some 25+ years ago. When you factor in paying bills and the expenses of raising the kids it just isnt as affordable to buy the latest and greatest games anymore. I wait till I can get them used or at a newer reduced price. I am a patient person so I can handle not having the hottest thing on day 1.

It was much different then. Having a job and not having to pay bills...I was buying games for the snes and genesis and later the saturn and ps1 at a rate of 2-3 a month. No more! I am also a balanced consumer. One who has the benefit of taking the middle road in each generation console war because I know that taking sides in something like gaming is pointless. You just end up missing out on what the whole industry is meant for. Fun and entertainment!

Those that have one system of choice, do yourself a favor and get the others as well. I can guarantee you that there is fun to be had on ALL systems.

u sure about that? last i checked Sony is not just for Hardcores,They appeal to EVERYONE also called Mainstream, look at there sales record speaks for its self.

Xbox 360 appeals to """"Americ an"""" ; Horny and Violent younger crowds. These crowds don't have money a lot of times """"" or brains"""" """. they're in school, work fast food and tend to get games from their parents and there drugs and ADD or during holidays and birthdays. this is also bad because their are often lulls in seasons where few games are sold.

EDIT To aaquib5: Not everyone is a MGS4 fan, GEARS OF WAR2 could sell twice as much as your mgs4 game, and stop predicting what this games are capable of. Just because you feel that MGS4 is bigger than the 360 library combine does not makes it true.

aaquib53774d ago

What's your point? All those games combined probably don't equal the immersive and entertaining experience you get from MGS4.

heyheyhey3774d ago

wow Shadow Man

even if you ignore the fact that the list you gave is full of PC games and timed exclusives

it still sucks hard

not one of those games comes close to something like GOW3, MGS4 or FF13 (MAYBE Gears 2)

mikeslemonade3774d ago

Gears of War 2 will increase system sales by 200% i don't think so. Everyone excited for Gears of War 2 already bought it when Halo 3 and Gears 1 came out. Where as MGS4 is a franchise that has a huge fanbase debuting on the PS3 with no other game like it.

None of the 360 games will expand the audience this year and the only time we will see 360 increase sales is either a price drop and Christmas sales.

its not age... its knowledge + experience = wisdom

LevDog3775d ago (Edited 3775d ago )

I can see that.. Ps3 owners are smarter (something that comes with age)... I mean We know we dont have to pay for add ons and other crap..

Blue tooth capabilities
Blu Ray (built in)
Free online
WiFi (built in)
Rechargable Controllers

Plus most PS3 owners are owners of previous Playstations, 1 and 2.. So they know the history and what PS brand has to offer

Younger people like Red and blue power ranger shooters with Pink and purple enemies "Hey Ma' look at all the purty colors"

Ok I coulda left that last part out, but I just couldnt help myself

Plus PS brand offers more mature style games.. Do you think lil 12 yr olds that dont know the history behind the Metal Gear saga.. Would really sit through those Cut scenes and know whats going on..

most 12 year olds were still in diapers when Metal Gear started

EDIT: HAHAHA I didnt even notice I did that.. Ill leave it up, So I can laugh at myself

butterfinger3775d ago

12 year olds weren't born when Metal Gear started. "20th Anniversary"

Syronicus3775d ago

Man that was a long time ago. Now, a wife and two kids later, sitting through a few cutscenes is nice. I love to relax to one of the best game stories ever.

As for age groups playing what console... Yeah, I guess they are pretty close. I being older have less of a tolerance for poor quality and so the PS3 tends to be my more favored console. THat's not to say I hate the Xbox 360, in fact, I love the games. I just wish it were a bit more reliable.

Daz3775d ago (Edited 3775d ago )

ps3 owners are smarter :P thats funny.

There a immature peopel every where m8 including on ths ps3 (but you cant hear them, which is a good thing. Also some adults take some things a bit to far even thought there like 30.

Some just dont like losing i think.

InMyOpinion3775d ago (Edited 3775d ago )

"I can see that.. Ps3 owners are smarter (something that comes with age)..."

N4G proves you wrong.

"I mean We know we dont have to pay for add ons and other crap.."

Say what?
You have to pay to get rumble. You also have to pay to get HD-cables.

ASSASSYN 36o3775d ago

"I can see that.. Ps3 owners are smarter (something that comes with age)."

Really, I got two degrees B.S. Aviation and B.A. in History currently getting my Masters in History and yet I don't want a ps3. I consider myself to be intelligent and smart. And Age does not dictate how smart you are. Anyone can be alert, calculating, and resourceful which is the definition of smart. And a game system does not define that. Also, your ability to type out what is posted on the side of the ps3 box means nothing except that you can read. Enjoy your ignorance I am sure it is bliss.

Xiru3775d ago

Paying to get HD cables and rumble is a minor expense. The rumble would have been included if Sony didn't get themselves into a lawsuit with the company who made the rumble in their controllers. The HD cables are a minor oversight of Sony's. Would you honestly not get a console because it doesn't have HD cables in the box? Do you know how stupid that sounds? The 360 Wireless adapter is more than the HD cables and dual shock 3 combined.

Xiru3775d ago

When choosing between a 360 and PS3, the intelligent choice is PS3. More features for the price. I don't care how many degrees you have. Its a fact. Now everyone doesn't need all the PS3 offers, and thats fine. Just please don't ever say the 360 is a better "value for money" than the PS3 because it just isn't true.

man0fsteel3775d ago (Edited 3775d ago )

Well I have a PHD in neurology and rocket science and I am two steps away from curing cancer and gaining a nobel prize! - of course i'm kidding

Well anyways, my point is when it comes to choosing which console suits you, it doesn't matter what educational degrees you have or how old you are. What matters is what system suits you the best. Thats all. For me its the PS3. It works better for me for my own personal reasons.

In reality though I do have a Dual degree in Business Administration and Sociology - I currently work for a Financial Services company and i'm enrolled in classes for my MBA :p

Shadow Man3775d ago

If 'Paying to get HD cables and rumble is a minor expense' how come sony doesn't put them inside the box?

TheSadTruth3774d ago

Prior to the release of MGS4 (the first real killer app), I would say the major differences are these:

Xbox 360
-Younger Kids (5-12)
-Hardcore Xbox Fans (Halo loyalties mainly)
-Teenagers
-Family System
Playstation 3
-Blu-Ray enthusiasts (Adults)
-Hardcore Sony Fans (Brand loyalties)

Before the price cuts.. there really was no reason to buy a PS3. Most adults wanted the system because Blu-Ray winning was inevitable and most kids wanted it because they have diehard brand loyalty (most people posting here). MGS4 is the first real reason for those unbiased gamers out there to have a legitimate reason for picking the system up.

IdleLeeSiuLung3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

@levdog:
I'm not sure what I should cry about, your stupid comment or the number of people that actually agree with your comment. Why would you judge a person's how smart a person is based on their age or their preference of one console over the other. Did you consider that to 360 owners, that the 360 caters more to their needs. Probaby not, cause you are too blind from being a blatant fanboy of Sony.

@Xiru:
I think the Xbox 360 is a better value for money to me. Value is relative, for me the Xbox 360 has the types of games I enjoy playing and the features on Live that I like. If I bought a PS3 (which I did, a gunmetal PS3 MGS4 Limited Edition Bundle), which cost more and has more features I don't use it isn't a better value. Value only comes from it's usefulness....

LevDog3774d ago

Ok hahaha peeps I didnt mean smarts as in IQ.. I prolly should have put Commen sense.. because PS3 is just a smart investment.. While 360 is gimped and stripped down..

PS3 is better for price, quality and features..

Older people know about bargains and what is worth 500-600 bucks

You can have a huge IQ and still have little to no commen sense..

Sorry for the confusion haha

Grown Folks Talk3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

Network adapter (prior to slim), memory cards, hard drive (of limited use), multi-tap... I know, I know, that was "last gen". Anything that is used as a complaint against Microsoft, but was also an issue in Sony's history, can be completely overlooked on Sony's behalf as long as it isn't happening "right now". We all know good & well MS has been in the game as long as Sony, so they shouldn't have ANY growing pains or issues along the way. I mean the Playstation has NEVER had any problems. These articles are stupid. Pretty much everything has a core demographic, but you would think, based on comments on this site, that everyone with a particular console is exactly the same. Same mindset, same age, same taste in everything. I talk to 50 & 60 year olds at Gamestop when I'm working, & playing games is probably about the only thing we would have in common.

SmokeyMcBear3774d ago

hahaha assass.. a masters in history.. .don't waste your money, wouldnt you want to use your aviation degree.. whatever that is.

IdleLeeSiuLung3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

My point is that, you can't stereotype consumers based on a particular choice. They purchase products based on their need and what is of value to them. Part of that value could be that their peers have one...

The fact that you can get a PS3 and get the a super processor (CELL) or get a Blu-Ray player is of little importance if I don't use it. Is it a better value if I paid $50 more for something I do NOT use?

Fact of the matter is that, in reality for many older aged video gamers, the extra cost of equipment aren't a big deal. Now, I don't like giving MS $40-50 for the Xbox Live or pay them $70-100 for the wifi adapter, but until PS3 puts out games I want to personally play it is just a paperweight next to my Sony TV.
