That's a fantastic point that a lot of people will need to keep in mind actually. It must be said that there are a lot of gamers out there who don't really bother with online, but these days, online subs, especially PS+ are just so worth it that not many people will easily pass it up.

I have them all but don't use Wii u much at all. My ps4 is sort of getting dusty at this point (was playing TLoU for a while tho) and I'm waiting for the big releases. If I wanna play mp or try a game, O just grab a 1 month sub. My x1 is where I spend the bulk of my gaming time and I play all mp/coop games there (at least for multiplats). So it really depends who you are. I could live with out Wii u personally, but having both ps4 and x1 is going to prove very useful in the coming years as the bigger exclusive titles begin to drop.

I own all 3 consoles and both handhelds, but don't subscribe to PS Plus or Xbox Live. Only online games I play anyways are Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, and soon, Smash Bros.

Wii U, PS4 and 3DS all see equal amounts of play, in spurts of course. This month might be all Wii U, then 3DS for a few weeks, then a long PS4 binge.

What I don't play much is Vita or X1. Used to play Vita often but then they stopped making games for it after Final Fantasy X port. Freedom Wars, Natural Doctrine and Tales of Hearts R should change that in the coming months though.

As for X1, well, I buy all multiplats on PS4 where they run better so it's basically sitting there without any games for it. It'll be an exclusive only machine, and I'm totally okay with that. I knew it would be solely for the exclusives when I bought it.

Absolutely positively couldn't imagine gaming without a Wii U, PS4 and 3DS though. That's where it's AT.

I dont have the ps4 or xb1 but I do have the wiiu. I can only comment on the topic in general as it relates to owning all previous platforms. Personally I say yes. It provides the unrestricted access to the exclusive games on each.

When it comes to multiplat games...I tend to spread the buying habits around. What I find a good deal on or what my friends have in order to play online if need be. Like recently I picked up cod blops 2 & ninja gaiden 3 on wiiu for $8 ea from best buy. Sure I could have gotten them on 360 or ps3 but not for that price.

It isnt about resolution or which is the better system. Others who only have one or the other tend not to have choice as an option. So I like to have options and not limit myself. I see it as the multiplat games are intended to play the same from beginning to end unless there is something exclusive to one version or another.

I like playing the field but I can respect someone who doesnt so long as they can respect my choice which can differ from theirs. All that matters is we are all in the same hobby to have fun.

No point of owning all three. Maybe the Wii U down the road for Zelda, a new Metroid, and a new Mario adventure game but the PS4 and XB1 has mostly the same third party games so it is up to the individual which exclusive games they want. I plan to get the PS4 and even the Wii U down the road when they have games like Uncharted 4 and Zelda release and by that time the systems should receive a price drop so it can definitely be better for my budget. I simply like the online service, the constant monthly updates, and games like Forza Horizon 2, Halo MCC, and Killer Instinct Season 2 coming out this year; thus that is the system I chose to supplement my PC but I am not a hater or fanboy of a particular brand and I do plan on getting all the consoles down the road but only one is needed at this time.

Personally I can't stand the idea of having to pay extra monthly fees for online especially on top of monthly internet bills, it just seems ridiculous to me. This is one of many reasons I game on PC and Wii U, best first party exclusives from Nintendo and the best versions of third party games on PC. Getting the best of both worlds from a smarter investment in the long run makes the most sense to me.

I Have owned ever game console since Atari 2600 . Even Nintendo system up to Wii every playstation 1-4 every Sega system and OG Xbox and 360 Even 3DO . I own both OG Xbox and 360 at launch. I didn't buy PS3 until Demon's Soul's. As soon as I got my PS3 . My xbox start collecting dust. Last game I played on 360 was The Witcher 2 best 360 game last gen in my opinion. This gen I see no reason to buy a X1. It's a weak console with inferior multiplatform games . Also I hate Microsoft first party exclusive games . Microsoft exclusives have no variety. Microsoft exclusives are picked by a some suit a Microsoft. That reads some reports trying to find the next COD blockbuster. Microsoft first party games are all FPS and Americanized action games shooters for the 13-25 year old demographic dude bro's Michael Bay action junkie. Microsoft has no original ideas or creativity. You will never have great games like The Tomorrow Children , Wild, Rime , Tear away, LittleBigPlanet or Bloodborne. Nope just more Brain dead shooters for Spoxplosion junkies.

360 had weak first party exclusives and xbox live gold was $60 a year for the same thing as PSN.

I have a gaming pc, X1 and a ps4. Between my pc and X1 they get the most playing time. With the pc a little more burn. I havent played the ps4 in months and is getting dusty. I do leave it in stand by mode to charge my phone or other electronics thats can be used with the controller plug.

I want the wiiu for hyrule warrior and a few other exclusives. But dont see that happening anytime soon due to my list of X1 games I'm getting before the year ends. I do have psn+ and live.but since I barely use my ps4! I dont see me renewing it once it ends

Don't have XBLA Gold, but i've got PS+. If PS+ for PS4 doesn't improve in the near future I have absolutely no intention of renewing it.

You are buying your subscriptions in the wrong places if you find them expensive.

For people in the UK, for example, you can get a Xbox Live subscription at CDKeys for about £24 for 12 months. Add in the free games with subscriptions and I think it is very reasonable.

PS+ is not regularly on offer at CDKeys, but it can be nabbed for £35. I will not be renewing my PS+ subscription next year though. It's more expensive for me and I have less friends on PS+. It won't stop me from playing the PS4 though, I just play online multiplayer more on Xbox One. I suppose it is hypocritical that I added the free games bonus on Xbox Live and not PS+, but I have enough indie games to last me a lifetime anyway across both consoles.

I actually bought the Wii-U for my daughter for Christmas this year. We both enjoy co-op Mario games. I can't ever see myself playing Wii-U online (maybe a few games of Mario Kart 8).

So, my Xbox One is used for online multiplayer and EA Access, My PS4 is there mainly for Uncharted and Silent Hills, and the Wii-U is there to have fun with my daughter. So I really do have reasons to own all 3 consoles.

If you want exclusives, if you want multiplats, if you want retro, and if you want backward compatibility, or the ability to play any systems games prior to PS3/360... the only solution is PC. Since 2000, PC has seen 2381 Exclusives. Yes... 2381. And any modern gaming PC can play ALL of them. Then when you factor in multiplat, that's well over 30,000 games. Add in all the games possible with emulation and it easily skyrockets to over 100k.

And don't forget, you can use your computer for your small business, you can write off the purchase as as a business expense!!

I built my PC back in 2012 for PC games and graphic design use.

I bought my Xbox one for Xbox exclusives and to play with my friends that only play on XBL.

I bought my PS4 for all the other console games I care about and to play with my friends that only play on PSN.

It's funny, at no point did I think to myself that none of that mattered and I should just limit myself to one gaming ecosystem.

To each his own though, I guess if you're happy with nothing but a PC more power to ya.

You must also be new to gaming. It's not an event unique to this generation. We've seen other titles or franchises go multiplat in the past.

Titanfall counts, by the way. It may have been on PC from the start, but the point is that it's one less big name you need an XB1 for. Not to mention the fact that the next game is likely to be on PS4, as well. Hell, even Plants vs Zombies is multiplat.

Outside of the games listed, there really aren't any big name exclusives on XB1.

The assumption, by the way, isn't that EVERY Xbox game is like that. Rather, it's speculation that- based on the reality you'd rather forget- it'll continue to happen in the future as it has happened I'm the past and as it is happening now.

Let me ask you, aside from Shadow Complex, can you name me one popular XBL Arcade title that didn't get a Steam release? It isn't the point that TitanFall, PvZ, Ori, etc... were from the onset coming to PC. It's the fact that outside Gears, Halo, and Forza EVERYTHING else has a very good chance of being ported to PC. Unless you started gaming on an Xbox (and have a huge friends list there), there is very little reason to own MS hardware if you own a gaming PC. Luckily for MS, I'm a sci-fi nut and can't do without Halo and Gears.

Don't get rid of your PS4 for a Wii U. You're going to want to keep that thing for all the games coming.

But at the same time, you definitely need to get a Wii U. So many exclusives you've missed out on already, and the list keeps growing larger. By the end of this year it will be impossible to catch up on the backlog if you don't get an early start. Main ones to focus on though, 100% definite gotta buys are:

I would advise against getting rid of your PS4, but since you have a PC rig I guess you technically have multiplats covered. That decision should be based on whether or not you want Sony's exclusives.

Being a PC gamer, the library of games is so incredibly huge that most of us don't even care about playstation exclusives. And if we hear about some exclusive game that seems like it's going to become legendary in the gaming world, we just play it on an emulator once we can.

And do you guys remember how the new PS3 emulator about 2 months ago was only able to run at 3fps on early PS3 games that were not very demanding? Well it seems they got some games running at 25-30fps now. If the speed of development continues like this, i'll definitely be borrowing my brothers PS3 collection by years end!

And yes.. it will be fun playing Uncharted 3 while thinking about all the fanboys who said i never will be able to. lol.
oh... and PS4 emulation will not require nearly powerful of a PC since both systems run x86 architecture. All that's needed is to break the encoding/encryption and is off to the races.

Not worth it in my case, not going to buy multiple consoles when you'll spend most of your gaming time on just one specific machine while the other two will be collecting dust, that to me is a waste of time and money, I don't follow gaming like some sort of religion, I rather have one specific console, if I miss out on a game I might like on other machines, so be it, not the end of the world as we speak, I have a lot to do with my money that owning multiple consoles isn't one of those, so no, I'm good with sticking to one console for the entire gen, made that mistake last and 5th gen, won't repeat it again this time around, to the other people, you do as you wish, but I already set my mind.

I can't justify buying an XBOX One yet. The PlayStation 4 seems to have the better multiplatform releases so far (at the same price, mind you) and the exclusives coming appeal to me more on PlayStation 4. I *did* want Sunset Overdrive but I lost interest. I need to see more of Quantum Break and I'm really interested in Scalebound, but that's not enough so I'd rather bum an XBOX One from a friend and play them. Plus, I'm not paying for Live and PlayStation Plus and I like my PlayStation friends a lot more. I also play mostly single player and XBOX consoles have always felt more socially intensive than PlayStation. And when I need that local multiplayer madness with my chums, I have the Wii U for that.

Last generation, it felt totally worth it to own all 3. Now? Eh, I don't speak for everyone, but personally, the XBOX One is a pass for me.

Sure. I've never hid it. I love a good Mario game fro time to time. Star Fox is also another classic but they've really done nothing to captivate me with the WiiU. I bought it on launch day with a few games and ultimately I find the system to be extremely underwhelming and it can go for weeks or even a month without being picked up.

When was the last truly significant and innovative Mario released? I'm not talking Smash Bros or Kart. I mean a solid Mario 64 or Sunshine style game? I like the New Super Mario Bros because it hearkens back to my childhood but I want something with more meat to it.

Based on the large collection of games I have for the Xbox/360/One, PS1-4 and other consoles. The Wii U has the smallest number of games that keep me turning on.

Furthermore, while I really like the idea of the screen on the controller, I find it uncomfortable, the batter life isn't great and the distance by which you can move away from the console with the controller before it drops is paltry. I can't even go into my bedroom with the WiiU controller without it saying it's out of range (my bedroom is on the other side of the wall fro the TV it's hooked up to) whereas I can go to the kitchen(at least 3 times the distance if not more) with my PS4 or Xbox One controller and still talk to my friends.

Wii U was rushed and if Big N releases another major console - I'm waiting for at least a full year if not longer. In my opinion, it just simply wasn't worth owning.

Right now the PS4 is the most worth it out of all 3. More games, better games, better multiplats, better value, etc.

I think Wii U will be worth it in the future with more good games coming from Nintendo on the horizon.

The XB1 not so much as the only worthwhile exclusives will be Killer instinct, Sunset Overdrive, and Halo MCC.

Nope and people who say otherwise are just kidding themselves. Their is not enough time in the day to play titles from all consoles. To be honest I still have a back log of at least 15-20 games on my ps3 that I still have to play and at least 80% of them are still in the wrapper. As someone mentioned before, paying for subscriptions for 2 consoles is ridiculous; It has nothing to do with being cheap or not being able to afford it (although if thats the case theirs nothing wrong with that) its just a matter of spending your money wisely.

I've got a plenty capable PC gaming rig and I'd never recommend someone dump consoles for PC. It's way more streamlined an experience than it was back in the '90s, but it still brings tons of aggravation from time to time that you'll never see on console. It's a simple fact that so many PC gamers tend to like to sweep under the rug, pretending that only morons ever have problems with their PCs.

Was it redundant to own both last gen? They both offered a ton of exclusive games. Uncharted, Mass Effect, TLoU, Ratchet, Halo, Gears of War, God of War, Fable, Gran Turismo, etc. Plus timed exclusives like BioShock, Mass Effect 2 and Elder Scrolls. Several of those are contenders for game of the generation.

Sony for awesome third party and most of all AMAZING varied first party lineup

I'd say with Smash, kart,and Xenoblade Cross Nintendo has the strongest online entertainment bar PC, i don't play shooters much though so that is why.

I used to have a need to own all the systems, but its so redundant now. I couldn't imagine my gaming life without the Wii U and 3DS right now. There is such a lack of wow factor on the X1 and PS4 for me. Nintendo is actually doing some great stuff with their systems, I just wish we could get some Wii U HD versions of some key 3DS games.

I liked Dead Rising 3 and Watch Dogs on X1 but they just seem to lack that certain "something" that makes me want to play them for an extended time. Im just burnt out by the same-y type of games on both of the "Next Gen" systems. Throw in the amount of "Definitive Editions" of last gen games and I feel we are being duped! These systems were not ready yet and it will be years before we see what they can really do. For now, The Wii U and maybe one or the other, but definitely not all 3 at this point.

If you really think yo have to have enough time to play "all the games from all the systems" in order to justify a purchase, wouldn't that same logic apply to buying even just one console?

There are clearly more games coming out than anyone has time to play, but that's no reason to assume a multi-console owner has to buy every single one of them in order to justify their purchase. Nobody has EVER done that.

I always get all consoles and currently have all 3 consoles and both handhelds. I would have waited longer to get a Wii U this gen but my son got one as a gift at launch because his uncle works for Nintendo. Honestly, there is nothing to play on any of them. Their respective line ups have really underwhelmed. Only exclusive I have really liked is Mario 3D World. But obviously down the road they will all provide more than enough to make all three purchases nearly mandatory.

Had all three (X1, PS4 & WiiU) plus 3ds and Vita. I do most of my gaming on a high end PC so that covers multiplats. Finally traded my PS4, Vita and WiiU in on Steam cards when Gamestop was running a 30% plus incentive on them. I haven't regretted it as the PS4 was just collecting dust, the WiiU had nothing I wanted and the Vita is just dead. I will get another PS4 when it has some games I want, not HD remakes.

Actually I own a business that covers WA,OR,ID, MT and AK and have over 50 employees and is very successful. So yeah, I would be willing to wager I am a better business person than you are.

By the way smart ass, when you can get 90% of what you paid for the thing in Steam cards (The system of my choice), I think I did alright. Plus its not like I care about the money ($400 Ooooo), I just didn't want the things collecting dust. Anything else you care to say?

It depends on what games you're interested in. I got the X1 for Killer Instinct S2, Forza Horizon 2, and GTAV, and the Wii U for Bayonetta 2 and Nintendo exclusives.

Best combination, as things stand, is a Wii U and either a PS4, XBone, or PC.
For those that care about graphics and a lot of third party, PC is the way to go, though it's a bit more complicated and you may run into bugs a lot more often.

Me personally, I went with a Wii U, PS3, and an ASUS.
My gaming needs have been quite thoroughly covered for a while now.

No. It costs a lot of money to support multiple consoles. I had a Wii U, but recently sold it because I wanted to focus more on my Xbox One. I enjoyed the One more than Wii U anyway, so I figured it was the right decision. I'm sure people won't agree however

For now... I think it's only worth it to have a gaming PC and a Wii U. In a few years, you can probably add the PS4 to that list. I'm not sure if Microsoft will ever be able to convince me to buy their console. Microsoft started everything that's wrong with the industry today. Of course Sony is totally treading into that territory too with timed exclusives, timed DLC, and a subscription based model.

Having both a PS4 and an XB1 is almost pointless especially at this time.

Having EITHER a PS4 or XB1 AND a Wii U is a far far far better combination.

Wii U doesn't have a lot of games but the games it does have are the best exclusives available on any of the three systems.

What it lacks is the multiplatform games which makes up the majority of most gamers collections. You only need one of the two big consoles or a gaming PC for 95% of those third party multiplatform games.

On a scale of importance

1. Multi-Platform games (due to sheer quantity of quality titles ... this is number one with a bullet) System to buy: PS4 or XB1 or Gaming PC

2. Nintendo Exclusives (lets face it ... Nintendo has the best exclusives now and will have the best exclusives in the end like they always do. Nintendo is still gaming's best overall single publisher) System to buy: wii U and 3DS

3. Sony Exclusives (Sony's exclusives can complete with the best of any publisher. They have a wild variety of genre's covered with supremely high quality studios behind them) System to buy: PS4

4. Microsoft Exclusives (Microsoft has less overall big exclusives but the few that they do are of massive importance/appeal to many gamers such as the Halo franchise) System to buy: XB1

5. PC exclusives (this is a wildcard because if you are a fan of PC exclusives, the chances are you don't care about anything else so this could be number 1 easily for some gamers).

So for me the best possible combination is PS4 and Wii U with 3DS as my portable.

This covers the following:
1) all of multiplatform games
2) The best set of exclusives ... Nintendo's exclusives
3) The second best set of exclusives ... Sony's exclusives.

I own a 360, XB1, WiiU and 3DS. Truthfully, I game mostly on the XB1 as in addition to playing the free games, I am an EA Access member. My crazy backlog is on the 360. Every now and then I will use my 3DS and with Smash Bros. around the corner, I expect to commute to work and back w/ it daily. My WiiU unfortunately hasn't been on in a little over a month. Mario Kart was fun for a bit but it didn't last like I thought it would. Next up on my Gamefly acct is Sonic Lost World and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze but it's gonna be tough to get through as I am now on Destiny, trying to do as much as possible before Halo MCC drops. Being an adult sucks!

Not for me PS4 is all I need. I had an Xbone but sold it since I never played it and I don't care for MS same exclusives over and over. Might build a PC someday. But PS4 is all I need.
