Nintendo Leading a Double Life: Issues in N.A. and Success in Japan

"Nintendo is leading a double life, and it has to be insanely frustrating for the executives. In the west, the Wii U troubles are well documented, and while they have been selling fairly well since the launch of Mario Kart - and, will continue through Hyrule Warriors and Super Smash Bros - they still are not doing as well as they themselves had hoped. In Japan, however, Nintendo is actually selling on par with the PS4, and the New 3DS and the New 3DS LL are blowing both out of the water. It's a good time for Nintendo in Japan, even if its not in the west."

It could be worst. At least they have a market that it's selling well.

AdamRoffel1539d ago

Ya, and even in the article I do state things are looking up in N.A. as well. What's really sunk the Wii U in the eyes of the media is the fact that they needed to revise their sales expectations. In a sense, they were destined to be a 'failure' once they (drastically) cut sales expectations. Sad, but I fully expect them to bounce back (and have begun so already!)

They know how to sell in their own turf. The 3DS still sells very well and its coming up on 4 years old. The problem is the Wii U can only sell so much in a country that is moving away from consoles. So all the japanese software (Fatal Frame, SMT X FE, Monster Hunter, Bayonetta) is only of niche appeal in the west and is starting to fail to shift hardware in japan too.

Retro Studios was intended as a western-focused studio, and i think they should buy more. Like when EA refused to support Sega, Sega made its own sports games that were very successful for them. Also western-style RPGS and horror games are increasing in popularity and they could make some of those.

One way to bounce back in America would be to bring back the Wii like to play ads, but montage Wii U games of course, that ad campaign was brilliant.

I have an idea for Bayonetta 2, show university students bored in their class, then too hot for teacher appears with Wii U dressed as Bayonetta, montage of gameplay would be shown, it would further prove the point that the Wii U is for everybody appealing to pervy in college students as well, hire me Nintendo : P

I Got it bad..Got it bad..Got it badd..

I like it!

randomass1711539d ago

Wouldn't that just cause more confusion between which is which? The Wii ads were definitely better but reusing that style could be another detriment to Wii U's marketing.

what do they expect. wii u and 3ds are viewed as the kiddy systems here.

until they start tailoring to more mature gamers here its never going to take off.

zerocrossing1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

Every Nintendo system since the N64 has been accused of being a "kiddy system" But not one of them ever truly were.

Are any of these titles truly kiddy games?

Turok, Turok 2, Turok 3, Turok Rage Wars, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, The Mountain, Mad World, Tomb Raider Legend, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider Underworld, Fatal Frame 4 and Fatal Frame 2 Wii Edition.

Yes, Nintendos first party titles are kid friendly and are more open to a wider audience. But that's not a bad thing especially when considering the quality of those first part games.

The Wii U is no more a kiddy system than the PS4 or XBone. That's just a common misconception perpetuated by those who don't know any better or by those who dislike Nintendo.

MrPink20131539d ago

We're you too young to remember Mortal Kombat? That game was severely censored on SNES. Which first party games have blood in them?

Nintendo is known for being a family friendy comaony, not a kiddie system.

There is more to gaming than mature titles, and out of 7 billion people on this earth not all of them want realism and mature content as their only source of gaming fun, if at all. There is always and will always be a market for fun games without a Hollywood blockbuster spin.

Strangely enough, over 75% of the audience for mature titles, are in fact kids. While less than 1% of the Wii U user base is under 12 yrs old, and over 85% of them are 18-35.

The ironic truth is, Nintendo consoles aren't kiddy enough. More kid-focused AAA would probably bring children in by the droves, though most adult gamers wouldn't care one way or another

CBaoth1539d ago

Ya mind linking the article about the 75% are kids? I'd find that a very curious read.

AdamRoffel1539d ago

Never ever underestimate the power of the parent. If only they had done a better job naming the system, to avoid confusion...

Realplaya1539d ago

Calling the Wii U Kiddie is the ignorance that's running wild in the gaming community.

CDbiggen1539d ago

The most important thing for me is that the games Nintendo are pumping out for Wii U are just plain fun to play. Mario kart 8, Donkey Kong Tropical freeze, Hyrule warriors, etc all superbly made, look gorgeous and are great fun to play with friends. I just don't understand everyone's unwarranted hatred of Nintendo and the Wii U.
