John Carmack Reveals VR Quest is 'Zelda-Esque', Working Title for Now

VRFocus - Oculus VR surprised virtual reality (VR) fans earlier in September 2014 by subtly revealing its first internally developed videogame, VR Quest for Gear VR. The title, a third-person dungeon crawler, was on display at the reveal event itself without Oculus VR making much in the way of an announcement about it. Today at the Oculus Connect developer conference in Hollywood, California, Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer Carmack touched upon the title a little bit more.

The story is too old to be commented.

I wonder if Doom 4 will support VR, Carmack should make it happen!

Jesus Christ. Are you trying to give me emotional trauma.

It's a Gear VR game, not an Oculus game? So Oculus is making games for other VR headsets... Doesn't that seem a bit counter-productive?

Nooo? Oculus is building an VR ecosystem, not just the hardware. Oculus is licensing out the years of research and software they've come up.

To say they're making a GearVR game is analogous to saying that a company is making a mobile port of their game. Since the GearVR setup is really just a smartphone affixed to your face, the game needs to be designed to run at 1440p60 on a tiny phone-GPU. They're still selling something, even if it's not directly to the user.

This would also allow Oculus to quickly push SDK updates to huge userbases of people accross different devices and services.
