Final Fantasy VIII turns 15: A look back at Faye Wong's 'Eyes on Me'

Examiner: Playstation role-playing game "Final Fantasy VIII" was released in the U.S. 15 years ago on Sept. 9, 1999. Marking a turning point in the "Final Fantasy" series, the graphics for this installment were next level at the time with realistically-shaped characters while composer Nobuo Uematsu continued to complement the love-and-war storyline with his emotive pieces of music. The gorgeous centerpiece was Faye Wong's "Eyes on Me," a ballad that detailed the growing romance between protagonist Squall Leonhart and his battle comrade Rinoa Heartilly.

My very first FF game. Effing awesome! I beat this game like three times! The first time I summoned GF Ifrit that game became my all time favorite! FFVIII and FFX are my favorite to date.

NukaCola1498d ago

Not my, first but one of the best in the series.

Final Fantasy VIII was right in the middle of the golden era of Final Fantasy imo. VII, VIII and IX are my favorites followed by VI.

I loved the game so much I named my daughter Rinoa, it wasn't my first though I had played the earlier ones. I have a play list of piano only ff songs that always bring back memories.

I love that video game names are becoming so common. I named my son Sephiroth (would have been Celes if he'd been a girl) and I know a Mileena and a Kyrie, plus I know of at least a couple of other people that have given their kids game names. This is a good trend :D

You named your kid Sephiroth?
Do you not care at all about the amount of abuse theyre likely to get at school/throughout their entire lives for a name like that?
Personally I think its awesome, but people are A-holes...

mydyingparadiselost1497d ago (Edited 1497d ago )

I did think about that and it's the reason everybody calls him Seph. I was worried about the guy that make his daughter Mileena because, well, if ANYTHING is wrong with her teeth it's going to be bad...
Anyway, kids that are a**holes will find a reason to be mean no matter what. If it's not a name it's your shoes, voice, height, haircut, etc. The same can be said about a lot of adults too, which is maybe the saddest part of all...

You already have it. It's called The 3rd Birthday. Too bad it's horrible.

While that would be cool. Not going to happen since when Square and Enix merged Square lost like a half dozen key people and who knows how many more other people that also left.

All we can hope for now is that the next installments in their bigger franchises are good and stuff.

Excellent game. Song fit within the story well being performed by Laguna's fling (later Rinoas mom) and with him being Squalls dad made for some interesting history in the characters

Ocsta1498d ago

I absolutely love this song. Its inclusion in FF8 was a masterstroke as far as I was concerned.

That moment during the ending where Rinoa appears out of the darkness and Eyes on Me starts playing still makes me a little teary-eyed. It's so perfectly timed...

To this day, I'm still impressed by how beautiful the FMVs are in FFVIII.
