TVG: Metal Gear Solid 4 Review 8/10

The core stealth/action gameplay is beginning to show signs of age eerily close to Old Snake himself, presumably Kojima-Productions realises this only too well. Guns of the Patriots won't sell PS3's to newcomers, but it is the perfect conclusion to a series Playstation fans have always prized. If you fall into this category but haven't yet taken the plunge, then now could be a very good time to pick up a PS3.

- Exceptionally crafted storyline.
- Sublime style and direction.
- Certain sections are perfectly realised.

Cons:
- Core gameplay feels as old as Snake.

No, but the cons they've listed are pretty weak.

It's complaining that MGS still feels the same, when I'm sure it doesn't always make this distinction when reviewing other franchises. In fact, I've played through the first act and it feels quite a bit different thanks to the control tweaks and the new gameplay mechanics. Then it complains that it is now more action oriented, which feels like a contradictory statement. And let me just warn you all now that it is impossible to go in guns blazing on anything other than the lowest two difficulty settings. And third, the in-game cinematic scenes are as seamless and beautifully inserted as any others out there. And even if we assume a quarter of the game is cutscenes, it still leaves a heart pounding 15 hrs to enjoy in the single player.

No matter how many disagrees you get you are right. They don't understand people have different opinions. Personally I like super long cut scenes and story elements being a FF fan but most people don't so this game will probably not as well as it should.

It's funny that they are busy posting here instead of playing the actual game.. or maybe they are passing the time during one of the 30 minute cut scenes.

What these F'n reviewers think . Everytime I see these reviews I dont give a crap at all cause there usually from a source or a name I never heard off . The only review you should care about is how you feel about the game . for me its a 20 out 10 . beside sex this games makes me so happy .

its not action oriented. thats the beauty of the game. you can play it as non action oriented as you want. i prefer to play tranqing everyone, killing only when i feel like it. on my next playthrough, i'm aiming for no kills whatsoever and no alerts.

the drebin system is completely optional. you don't have to buy and upgrade every weapon up the wazoo.

Well that sounds great Breakfast except you are wrong. These reviews are supposed to be less of an opinion piece and more of an objective view. I piss on any of these sites that list no grading standards and just grade games willy nilly under the guise of providing an informed look. I like HALO3. You know, I can't hear this "its just an opinion" any more. These are payed (?) professionals. Their "opinion" should be based on objective criteria, which makes it easy for a consumer to follow the reasoning behind the measurement. "Opinion" is subjective. It includes taste and personal preferences. Something which is hard to communicate in an objective way. In that respect, all the magazines should have a codex with a bunch of public criteria which everybody can understand. That way we can still compare different ratings on a common value system. I think the gaming press is so far off with what they are doing right now. I guess they usually hire temps to "just get a review out". Or at least thats how it looks to me.

But when writing a review, you're supposed to think of the quality above your gaming preference. If I were to review Super Mario Galaxy, I would give it a 9.5. As far as my personal opinion goes, it's more of a 7 because it's simply boring to me, however, that's just my gaming preference. Still the game is showing me a lot I didnt notice first time around.

Honestly, since when is gameplay length such an important factor? Replay value is far more important, which MGS4 has in spades. The gameplay in MGS4 is so much damn fun and it's just simply so stylish, with so many varied forms of gameplay (each act is practically a different style of game altogether) that I see myself playing through it time and time again for years to come. Nobody will argue that Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Super Metroid, or Super Mario Bros. are among the greatest games ever made. All 3 of those take less time to beat than MGS4. So why is the length of MGS4's adventure such an issue for reviewers? Is it fun? Hell yeah! Is there enough nuance there to warrant multiple replays for years to come? Hell yeah! Therefore, the game deserves to be ranked up there with the all-time greats, regardless of its story, or whatever. You can skip the cutscenes if you want, and just enjoy the wonderful, nuanced, cinematic awesomeness of the gameplay time and time again.

You know, I hate Gridiron. I'm Australian, we follow Rugby or Aussie rules, (I'm a Cricket man myself). I dont like that play stops every 20 seconds. I dont like that the game stops for commercials. I dont like having 2 separate teams, one for attack and one for defense. I dont like the showboating that goes on from the over paid player whenever the most pedestrian of Touchdowns is scored. In short theres no alot I like about American football.

But if was a so called games journalist and had to review the latest Madden, I wouldn't bring all my own baggage with me. Obviously I wouldn't be the ideal person to do it in the first place but if I had to I would put aside my own personal preferences/prejudices and try to be fair.

I wouldn't ignore the great graphics, I wouldn't ignore the framerate, I wouldn't ignore the ease of control, I wouldn't ignore the good stuff because I dont like the subject matter.

MGS is a masterpiece. Its art not seen in videogames before. Anything under a 9.5 is frankly insulting and suggest biased or an agenda. And if you not a football fan perhaps avoid Madden.

Is the FAMAS in there anywhere? I didnt find it. I really want it for old times sake. Those of you finished the game know why I ask. It's gotta be in that area somewhere right?!
