Coin-op Arcades Are Fading Into Memory

Video game arcades are fast disappearing from the scene. Roger Sharp, director of marketing for game machine manufacturer WMS Gaming (formerly Williams), says:

"I think it's tragic. This is part of our culture. And the arcade industry has always prided itself on being recession proof. But, then, this has never been an industry full of brain surgeons. For years they didn't have to do a lot of work to get customers, then when they were faced with competition, they lost them. It's pathetic."

I remember when the first Soul Calibur was released in the Arcade at Peter Piper Pizza. I must've only been about 5 or 6 years old. I probably wasted at least 50 tokens on that game. I miss it...:(

Syko5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

LOL, I worked at Peter Piper when I was like 15-16 for a second. I took a full X-Large cup full of tokens and played the hell out of Crazy Taxi and Hydro Thunder for the next 5-6 months...Good times. =)

TheDeadMetalhead5792d ago

I think I got rid of it, though. Because my Dreamcast went to crap. But it started working again and now I have to get all my games back! Damn!

I tried playing Crazy Taxi in an Arcade once. It's a lot harder than on DC, that's for sure!

TradingWarStories5792d ago

I remember I used to go to my local chip shop to play Street Fighter when I was like 8, great times...... wish they still had them I would go out and play on one now.

Syko5792d ago

Well here in Phoenix we have Gameworks and Dave and Busters...These places don't really have the newest games though and they love to rape you on the price per game. Some costing almost 4-5 dollars a game. F that. Arcade could make a comeback if they weren't ridiculously expensive and such a stale experience here in the states.

TheDeadMetalhead5792d ago

Hey, I'm in Tucson! You're talking about the GameWorks in Foothills mall, right? They charge like $3 for Daytona USA 2. And it's like 12 years old! Even the arcade at my Wal-Mart was replaced with some Real Estate Agency! It's depressing...

Syko5792d ago

LOL, Nice dude a fellow Arizonan. I was actually talking about the one at Arizona Mills off of the 60 but I do know of the one in Foothills. Never actually been there though.

TheDeadMetalhead5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

You're not missing out on much. It's got like 10 shooting games (including House of The Dead 2-4), a couple racing games, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Super Monkey Ball, Skeeball, an Air Hockey table and a guitar game (not like Guitar Hero). It sucks, though because all of the games are really old and they never get new ones. Of course according to this it's because the Arcades are dead.

Ju5792d ago

Phoenix here two. D&B just raped my recently on Time Crisis (Desert Ridge). I should get that on PS3, though.

There's a little hole-in-the-wall place in downtown Austin where nothing is more than $.50; there's a little mix of old and new.

Though, whenever I go to the boardwalk in New Jersey, 75% of arcades full of claw machine. It blew my mind. There were even claw machines offering Wiis and 360s.

TheDeadMetalhead5792d ago

Where is this place and how do I turn blood into quarters!? lol

Sayai jin5792d ago

Does not matter to me. I have 5 Arcades in my home. If you wanna see them let mek now and I will send you the link to my photobucket account.

EKWB reportedly plagued with financial disarray many gaming pc's left without parts

EK Cooling allegedly has slipped itself into a hot soup of seemingly endless financial woes, where it has not paid its staff, suppliers, and contractors for many months as the company is facing liquidity problems and a surplus of inventory left unsold, stuck in the warehouse for a more extended period. Gamers Nexus investigated these claims made by former and current personnel, where he found trails of unpaid bills lasting as long as three to four months and unpaid raises that accumulated for almost a year.

EK Water Blocks has two entities—a Slovenian-based headquarters and a US-based subsidiary, EK Cooling Solutions. Steve narrated the series of events in detail, stating that the company was reportedly irresponsible and negligent regarding payment. Consequently, partners and employees are forced to share the burden of alleged mismanagement. It all begins with its extensive range of products, leading to a surplus of goods. EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Yes this is not about video games directly but indirectly this will impact the pc gaming/workstation space hard.

This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

SO yeah i know not about a video game but think of it as amd leaving the pc space but this is ekwb that could be leaving water cooling in the pc space

Jayz2cents a supporter of there products also has issues

As someone that has built a watercooling rig. EK is big, but there's so many numerous watercooling part companies out there. EK's stuff isn't exactly amazing quality for the price compared to others either, it's just ok. Much like Corsair. The impact would be negligible long term. For perspective the majority of my parts are XSPC, at most I use EK for my gpu waterblocks and fittings. Both easily replaceable.
