Why I Don't Hate Nintendo as Much as Everyone Thinks I Should

Amber writes: "There is a lot of hate going around at the moment for Nintendo, in fact it has been going around for a while now and the question that I get asked the most is "Why do you like them so much? They're rubbish!" My answer is simple. Without Nintendo I don't believe I would be the gamer I am today, in fact I don't think I would have picked up a controller and played as much as I have done since 1997/8."

I don't hate Nintendo, I hate Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto and Reggie for screwing up Nintendo from advancing in the game industry, Nintendo shouldn't be a toy, sadly this is what this three morons have made of Nintendo :(

Look - I have little faith in them right now and I'm more than vocal about that but mostly that's because I expect so much more from them. I got a NES for my 10th birthday and it was the greatest day of my life at that point. I got a SNES the day it came out but then the N64 happened.

Missed street dates, continued delays and design screw ups left a sour taste in my mouth. Gamecube was a great little system with some AMAZING games but they lacked 3rd party support.

Then bring in the Wii. Sure - it was new and interesting and gimmicky even and it sold really well but 3rd party support once again sucked and why? Because they still didn't believe in what Nintendo was trying to do. Which brings us to the Wii U. My god has there ever been a more monumental fustercluck? Nintendo's 3rd party support is nearly non-existent and they're continually relying on their 1st party titles. Ya they're great but it's not enough.

Also, I'm sorry, but that controller for the Wii U is absolute garbage. The battery life is brutal, the range from the base unit is crap and for any extended gaming sessions it's uncomfortable.

So do I have a bit of a hate on for Nintendo right now? Maybe - but they have to stop playing catch up and get back to being an innovator. I expect so much more from them as should everyone else whoever has fond memories of the joy and excitement big N brought them at one time.

Honestly guys - this is a discussion forum. If you don't agree with me that's cool. I respect that but do me the courtesy of at least telling me why you disagree?

wonderfulmonkeyman3952d ago (Edited 3952d ago )

Well, you bash the game pad for a lot of strange reasons, for one.
It's not uncomfortable for long sessions and its range isn't an issue when you'll want to be near your tv anyways. It's the one controller on the market for next gen consoles that literally changes the ways gamers can experience their games (whether those improvements be big or small), and to be quite blunt, calling it garbage is a flat-out falsehood.
It's so good that it makes me wish Sony and Microsoft would upgrade to a similar style instead of sticking with the same thing they've had for the past two or three generations. Compared to the game pad, traditional controls don't just feel limited, they feel outdated.
They just don't offer the kind of positive new gameplay experiences, to devs or gamers, that the game pad does, especially with asymmetrical gameplay possibilities.
It's only issue right now is that it's not being taken advantage of more, but that doesn't stop it from being head and shoulders above what a traditional controller is; a conduit for game-improving experiences.

As for third party, they had the entire first year and a half to put out their games on the wii u with virtually no first party big-hitters interfering, and all they did was put out watered down ports of games we've all already played on the ps360's that we got last gen.
They failed to create compelling reasons for Nintendo gamers to support them en masse, hence their multiplat ports on wii u aren't beating the first party games.
That's not Nintendo's screw up; third parties are directly responsible for the kinds of games, and the content within them, that they bring to the system.
Watered down multiplats won't impress wii u gamers as much as the next Mario game.
A new game like Kingdom Hearts 3, however, might get some decent attention from them.

Nintendo has been surviving mostly on their 1st party games for decades, what makes it different now? I think it will turn around(it's already starting to) and don't believe that it will end up like the Gamecube did.

"Then bring in the Wii. Sure - it was new and interesting and gimmicky even and it sold really well but 3rd party support once again sucked and why? Because they still didn't believe in what Nintendo was trying to do."

I don't think it was that the 3rd party's didn't believe in what Nintendo were doing with the Wii(what ever that means), it was the hardware limitations and poor online service that made it difficult to port their games to the Wii.

"Also, I'm sorry, but that controller for the Wii U is absolute garbage."

there is plenty of controller options for the Wii U besides the gamepad.

"but they have to stop playing catch up and get back to being an innovator."

Was the gamepad not them being innovative? Do people seriously want all three of the big 3's consoles to be essentially the same and the only difference being the exclusives?

manaxknight13951d ago

also all the 3rd-party games had been released on the ps3/xbox360...so y get them for the wii u if they already been out? they are innovating for changing the experience the controller..touchscreen, has a camera. Definitely not garbage.

N4g_null3951d ago (Edited 3951d ago )

It is pretty interesting that most people that have a wiiu love that controller. You basically can play two player whatever with each player having their own screen. That extra screen is also motion senistive. That same controller has all of the buttons of the other consoles. Then you have controller choice. We are about to have 5 different controllers to choose from with a really robust bc and vc library to play your old games from.

You have your own fan social network also where true fans are creating art to share and helping each other thur these very challenging games. Invites are there messaging and even video chat is pretty easy to do. Everyone you played with shows up so you can send friend request. Then the mic screaming has been minimized praised the lord! Any development team can add this tech back in game because there is a mic and cam in every game pad.

Tech wise they created a platform that does handle modern gaming quite well. All fps support controller play and ir pointing play at pretty good framerates.

True 3rd party isn't present but I don't play consoles for 3rd party games. They never use the full power of the platform and you can get their games on better running pcs anyway. Plus the online equation has just turned into a way to tax you to play games that where simply not as fun as yesteryear games. So I look forward to what ms sony and Nintendo will make. Also 3rd parties are getting to big to fail now. So they might just begin to fail. The 3rd party franchises are in disarray compared to what the ps2 had. Many franchises are not even made by the original talent. Many new gamers do not realize this and are just getting suckered into wasting money.

You ask them to be innovative but simply dismiss two very big innovation and reinforce simply untrue statements. Also they are getting ready to unify console and handheld gaming. Why chase the high end when they can change how and what we can play. When you see what nvidia and amd are releasing you will see why the ps4 and xbone are going to get left in the dust by pc and by the smart phones and tablets they are loosing ground to. We have phone pushing 4k screen now.

All we have got from sony is remastered games that now run correctly. With ms we get the same while all of their games that are new are collectively boring. The power is also marginal. Please do not talk about specs. It is not in your favor. I will pose the closed hardware gets tweaked better than any x86 design. Also we all saw a whole gen where bigger numbers meant the ps3 was supposed to be more powerful yet the Xbox 360 got the better multiplatform ports and Sony eventually abandoned that very tech for x86 while nintendo builds a whole ecosystem around ngc tech that can now push mariokart 8 visuals and play ports without tweaks on one cpu out of 3. I don't know I respect what nintendo is doing with their tech rather than the pr. It sounds like you have fallen for pr rather than games. 3rd parties are promising junk that only looks good. Basically 3rd parties have lost their way in my eyes. The younger gamers will prop them up for a while but once enough quality software comes out game play expectations will rise again and Nintendo will be right there.

I don't think the majority of people on here hate Nintendo, well outside of LOL_WUT, but for most of us, we just want to see Nintendo get their act together and do better.

There have been many common sense moves Nintendo could have, and should have made, but it's like Nintendo looks at everything and says....Well that makes too much sense so let's do something entirely different.

And that's great for being innovative, but most of the time these things ideas are "common sense" because they work, they're proven, and that's what your fans want.

Nintendo wants to have that whimsical and magical Disney-like persona (I could actually see that merger happening Disney & Nintendo), but even Disney has had flops (not saying the Wii U is a flop, but Nintendo's though process at times causes unnecessary struggles), and they too know when something is just common sense (buy Marvel for example, and milking those movies, which is love).

Nintendo needs their innovative team, but they also need a "common sense" team who's decisions trump what the others have to say.

The Wii U hardware was one of those Why? It should have been APU based just like the PS4 and XBO considering the technology was there and ready for the Wii U with equal and greater power in Llano and Trinity, making Wii U ports and better 3rd party support effortless, but they didn't, which is one of those "WTF Nintendo moments" (I'm coining that "WTF Nintendo Moment").

The good news is that they're finally learning, and "listening". They're getting unique 3rd party support in Hyrule Warriors, Pokken Fighter, and other Japanese devs, but they still need western support.

They're listening to AMD, and if the rumors are true AMD is fully powering the next Nintendo handheld N-Fusion here we go.

So things are looking up for Nintendo, we just have to get through this last stumble.

Wii U controller is comfortable and responds well CRAZAY......THAT is why people are disagreeing with you.

Most people who use the controller actually like it a lot. Same with the Pro Controller, which is arguably even better.

I wouldnt pin blame on those three.

The truth is, almost every problem can be rooted to the design decisions behind the N64. Before Iwata had a prominent position or Reggie was involved at all. If it werent for the cartridge format, third parties would have been more supportive, and the system itself would've been more affordable. If you think about it, even with its great games, its a wonder Nintendo sold 33 million on a system who's library was so small it was surpassed by the Dreamcast in half the time.

Because Nintendo couldnt gain any ground with the N64 and Sony's utter domination 5th gen, the Gamecube was destined to fail despite an exceptional effort to appeal to the hardcore. Really the Gamecube only got the respect it deserved in retrospect.

Nintendo looked at the middling sales of their hardcore system, and realized they had to chase a wider audience, and experienced more success with that audience then they had in history.

To be honest i don't know what they should do next, but those three are not entirely to blame at all. They hopped on a train bound for that route due to decisions they didn't make. Except Miyamoto who helped design the N64.

people think i hate nintendo.. but i dont. im not a troll either. i have been here since 2008 and supported nintendo right from the start. check my comment history.

i have always been a nintendo fan, since the 80s lol but lets not lie, its a bad time to be a nintendo fan. all my comments in the last year or so reflect that. its not that i (or possibly many others) hate nintendo- its just they suck right now and people are unhappy/frustrated with them.

nintendo could be so much better. we all know this. we are all familiar with their catalogue packed full with classic games. so to be in 2014 with a nintendo that is hardly recognizable as that once great company... its sad.

they have changed beyond recognition, they used to be pioneers, innovators and a melting pot of creativity... now they seem satisfied to lounge in the background making small scale games on obsolete technology.

nintendo really need a shake up on management level to change the way the company views the market and how it wants to fit in the market, because right now nintendo arent inspiring people to buy their consoles in the numbers they once did.

i will most likely buy a wiiu for xenoblade 2, possibly smash bros before then, but on a whole, im very disappointed with the wiiu. its the first nintendo console i havent bought since the NES.

anyway, being a nintendo fan, i made this remix of the theme from zelda windwaker, dragon roost island

I like what I like.

Nobody tells me otherwise.

If you need somebody else to tell you how you should think, then you deserve to be lead astray.

I love that Nintendo does what Nintendo wants and doesn't cave into peer pressure as much as the other companies do.

They don't want to be " the cool kids", they just want to have fun.

I thought everyone was supposed to love Nintendo right now.

masterfox3951d ago

lol for what reason exactly ? or that was sarcasm ? O_o

WeAreLegion3951d ago

I don't know. I just get trolled by rabid Nintendo fans every time I say they're doing something wrong. It's even worse on Reddit.

Theyellowflash303952d ago

I'm sorry, but nobody cares what you hate and don't hate.

The fact that anyone could associate the word "hate" with a video games company is stupid. And another sign people take this sh*t way too seriously.

It's just video games. There are games for everybody.

Eonjay3952d ago

Hate is a very strong word.

AmbaLaBamba3952d ago

I'm only using a word that people use, I wouldn't use hate myself, probably dislike or something similar.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

XBLA Classic 'A World of Keflings' Is Coming to Steam, and There's a Demo

"Back in the innocent days of 2010, A World of Keflings was a fairly popular successor to A Kingdom for Keflings. I even wrote about it a few times in 2012! But the world of humans moved on, and NinjaBee's city-building/adventure game was last seen on the ill-fated Wii U in 2014. Fast-forward to the dark year of 2025, and not only is A World of Keflings coming to Steam, but there's already a playable demo! Perhaps the cheerful, no pressure gameplay that the Keflings bring is just what we need nowadays," says Co-Optimus.
