Garden Warfare on Xbox One outperforms PS4 version at retail

Article discusses the sales figures reported thus far for the two versions of the game across platforms, and discusses factors which may have contributed to the under-performance of the PS4 version of the game.

Axios23524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

Congrats X1 on great initial sales of P vs Z

Enemy3524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

Congrats? This is what happens when you release late ports on PS4. Why is this surprising? Blame Microsoft for buying timed exclusivity.

In the end, it only hurts EA, not Sony.

iamnsuperman3524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

Exactly and that makes the most sense (seriously who is itching to play Garden Warfare?). I know Garden Warfare is probably not the most expensive game to make but 88,000 at launch at 39,000 on the PS4 launch is nothing short of rubbish. VG chartz tracks this game selling below a million on four platforms. I wouldn't congratulate anyone on this

GarrusVakarian3524d ago

@ iamnsuperman

" (seriously who is itching to play Garden Warfare?)."

Are you serious? This game looks fun as hell. I've been watching tons of livestreams of this game. As soon as I'm done with Metro Redux I'm trading it in for this game.

Seriously, you need to watch some gameplay or something, this game looks great. I, for one, am itching. Lol.

gootimes3524d ago

I am very excited to play this game, looks really good. If it sells more on X1 congrats, it wont stop anyone from enjoying it.

MRMagoo1233524d ago

I already bought the game for my son on the ps4, I myself have been having a blast, it comes with console exclusive features too not found on any other console, such as 1080p and locked 60fps.

iSuperSaiyanGod3524d ago

@enemy does it really matter ? You sound like a crazy obsessive ex girlfriend about sony . It's a great game on both consoles . Chill .

bouzebbal3524d ago

i didnt even know this game was coming out on PS4. xbox lost a good exclusive right there and it runs way better on PS4 after what i've seen.

sonarus3524d ago

lol. This is the kind of game i would never pay for anyway. PS plus or bust

700p3524d ago

I see you crying. omg blame microsoft guise

thekhurg3524d ago

Stupid games like this and the majority of all these other indie games will continue to show low sales when actual AAA games are being released - which is the case with the PS4.

If this game came out in a drought - it would have sold more.

inf3cted13524d ago

Better graphics on xbone- Microsofts fault
Better graphics on ps4 - Microsofts fault

IndoAssassin3524d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

Fun game. Exclusive timed release favored MS this time. isn't that the point?

The real question is is whether Ms profited from this deal or not. I wonder how much this deal actually cost them.

BX813524d ago

@ enemy
I agree MS did a good job with timed exclusivity.

Magicite3523d ago

timed exclusivity is best MS can make, this happens when u dont invest in 1st parties.

Farmassy3523d ago

for people saying this isn't a good game, you probably haven't played it. My friend bought it for his kid and told me it was actually pretty good so i picked it up because of the low price.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was. PS4 owners should give it a shot. I definitely got my money's worth on it.

jackdaddy3523d ago

I bought this on ps3 for the kids and it doesn't have split screen.
Disappointed.

cellfluid3523d ago

Who the hell bought a next-gen console to play with plants lol man take ya ass In the bushes if you want to do t@ da hell with ea and t@ weak ass game.. Lollo can't be serious!!!

Xb1ps43523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

You know you ppl and your "blame such and such for timed exclusive" shits old bro... It's 3rd party anything goes if it bothers you that much mow a few lawns, rake some lawn, shovel driveways etc.. Many ways to afford both damn consoles..

I just don't understand how so many ppl can come here every damn day, so damn emotional and dedicated to gaming yet only own a ps4 or xb1...

Evilsnuggle3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

iamnsuperman@

(seriously who is itching to play Garden Warfare?)

Me it was only three games on x1 I'm jealous of. That's Below (thanks God it's also a time exclusive). Crimson Dragon because I'm a Panzer Dragon Saga fan and Plants vs Zombies Garden warfare. I so glad that both PvZ gw and Below are both coming to PS4.

I have to agree with you guys who say being a time exclusive has hurt sales on PS4. All games have a hype period. If this game was available at launch or before infamous ss. PvZ would have sold over a million copies. Look at the sales of Killzone SF and infamous second son as proof.

chrissarsenalsavart@

amen brother Axios2@ makes Georgenoob and truefan look sane and non fanboyish. Lol lol lol ;)

P.S (just a joke guys)

dcj0524@

Yes x1 has out sold 360 so far . Why because 360 was in short supply during the holiday season and had less units at launch. But 360 has out sold more units than x1 after the holidays season until now . So 360 has sold more units that X1 from January to August of it launch period. More than X1 during its launch. After the holidays . Also by the looks of x1 sales it will not have more units sold in the same time frame than 360 for long. X1 sells have been in free fall since January every month accept the x1 new kinectless sku . X1 are selling less and less every month. Last week PS4 out sold x1 3 to 1.

Thing are not looking good for X1. X1 needs a Christmas miracle from the Master Chief collection. If not a real price cut or a x1 kinect bundle for $400. Microsoft made a huge mistake in my opinion by dropping kinect it was the one advantage that x1 had over PS4. Microsoft should have taken the hit and sold x1 for $400 with kinect . That way it makes it a better value proposition against PS4. Now X1 is a less powerful console at the same price point as PS4. At least make the customer think it's getting a good deal Microsoft.

Dirtnapstor3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

Not sure how a timed exclusive benefits anyone anymore. Unless cross platform play becomes a reality...then the real wars will begin.
PvZ looks awesome, but I'll wait for a price drop.

Prime1573523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

@xb1_ps4, the problem exists when a THIRD PARTY PUBLISHER like EA decides to stop going multiplatform and goes exclusive (or timed). It really doesn't matter about exclusivity, it's just that first party is understandable as it's supported entirely by the platform.

@evilsnuggie, below is coming to ps4? I thought it was a true exclusive... But then again, I thought ryse and dr3 were true exclusives... can you pm me a source link if I don't find it? I'm out right now, drinking, so I'll forget, most likely.

Edit: also, I wonder what the total numbers will look like a year from now. Sony didn't market it like ms did...

Oh, and I've had my eye on this game since launch , to anyone saying, "who wants to play this?"

DLConspiracy3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

As long as you are saying timed exclusivity is bad across the board. You can't favor one for not doing it while praising the other for timed content. ie. Destiny or any other title. That would just be hypocritical.

k3rn3ll3523d ago

Actually it's one of the most fun games of this gen. Highly recommend even if your not into "shooters"

marcofdeath3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

XB1 is the most powerful system at this time.
CPU XB1 853MHz V.s. PS4 800MHz
XB1 winner

GPU XB1 1.3TF V.S. PS4 1.8TF
PS4 Winner

Memory XB1 276GB/s Peak VS 176GB/s PEAK
XB1 Winner

As you can see PS4 has only 1 win,
It's not the most powerful, it just has the most
powerful GPU only. Everything else is just okay..

XB1 continuous improvement over time. This is just the start.

ifistbrowni3523d ago

true. not only that, but there are games on the horizon, now...

when pvz launched on xb1 there were very little games available (no, this isn't a 'xb1 has no games' rant)..

Launching late in august is going to be bad for a game like pvz... Instead of gamers spending their money on 'filler,' they would rather save it a few extra weeks and buy one of the next big AAA games.

oof463523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

@Marcofdeath: You can cherry pick anything to make one thing stand out against another. Why stop at 3 comparisons? Why not show how the WiiU is superior?

Seafort3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

@iamnsuperman Please don't use vgchartz for accurate sales as I'm guessing this game was a digital title as well on consoles and vgchartz don't record digital sales.

You might as well ask an 8ball or a fortune cookie what the sales were on digital games instead of vgchartz. Both would come back with more accurate results :)

@cellfluid You realise Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare uses the same engine as Battlefield 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition, right? :P

Volkama3523d ago

The game is actually pretty good fun, though not going to set the world alight.

I didn't even know it had a retail release though.

Boody-Bandit3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

I picked this up off of Gamefly when it was released for the X1. I tried it for a few hours and just couldn't get into it. I sent it back the next day. I don't know a soul that bought this game. Maybe that's why it isn't selling on the PS4? I mean it didn't exactly light the world on fire on the X1 either.

I mean it's an acquired taste type game. To me it feels more like an XBL / PSN game that should cost $20. But I rented it and still couldn't get into so I price wasn't a factor for me.

Besides, this is what happens with timed exclusives. Can anyone recall a timed exclusive coming out months later on another console and outperforming the earlier release? I don't see how this is news in that regard. More like par for the course.

Jag-T10003523d ago

240 agrees? My God! There's nothing but Sony fanboys on this website. No wonder every xbox article gets bashed.

geddesmond3523d ago

Late ports and an ok game. When will publishers cop on to the fact that when you do timed exclusives it takes away a lot of sales. Why support a game that was timed exclusive to another platform when you can give your money to developers who treat you as equals.

chrismichaels043523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

So now we're comparing sales of a game that came out on Xbox 6 months ago to a game that came out on PS4 2 weeks ago? Makes sense.

EA decided to alienate the PS4 community and limit themselves to only one console for a short amount of time and now the lower overall sales are coming back to haunt them.

gootimes3523d ago

@marcofdeath

memory - X1 wins, really?

the Esram is that speed sure, but it makes up a TINY part of the systems memory, you are reachinggggggg.

PS4 easily wins hands down...

RosweeSon3523d ago

Exactly the people who were interested would have gone and got it on xbox one or PC? But yeah shock horror a 9 month old game doesn't perform well on the ps4, that'll be the end of the ps4 then.

Enemy3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

PS4 will always be more powerful than Xbox One. No "10%" increase is going to make up for Microsoft's screwup.

Notice how every current gen game, not cross gen, runs and looks better on PS4? You're only going to embarrass the people you're trying to convince when they end up using your desperate FUD. Developers have to go for parity to have an equal experience on Xbox One, like Destiny or Metro, which are still better on PS4.

And ms advertised it , sony didnt.

badz1493523d ago

MS had the exclusive deal with EA for the game and it was way after it has been released on the Xbone that they announced it for PC, PS3 and PS4.

just like MS with CoD and EA this gen, Sony advertises games they have the exclusive rights to advertise like ACIV, WD and the upcoming Destiny.

EA wanted the deal with MS in the 1st place and they got it. now that the game is out for the other platforms they hold back earlier for that timed-exclusive money, they have to cough the advertising effort necessary to sell it themselves now! that's the down side of timed-exclusive deals. you only got help in advertising, ONCE!

DanielGearSolid3524d ago

The initial sales were anything but great... Just because it sold more doesn't mean it was "great"

Gardenia3523d ago

Probably because PS4 gamers have already enough other great games to play

3-4-53524d ago

Most fun I've had playing an FPS game in years.

This game is really good.

Most fun Shooter.

You KNOW what I meant.

I literally made a mistake.

Yes I do own the game, put over 25 hours into it so far.

* Making one mistake with words on the internet, does not equate to NOT owning the game.

Solid logic though. I messed up. Gimmie a break you nazi.

* Got into the Habit of calling every shooter FPS, because there aren't as many 3rd person shooters any more. My bad.

An indie game that sales better on XB1 than on ps4 that's not even a First person shooter, I can't help to say that "I stand bemused".

Anyways, good on ya XB1.

And another thing, This post title is a little misleading, initially I thought this post was another graphic comparison blog between xb1 & ps4.

Prime1573523d ago

Yeah, I found the title misleading too...

I also find it ironic that xfans are applauding a-close-to-indie title as they termed ps4 "indiestation."

Seafort3523d ago

How the hell is this an indie game?

Popcap games were bought by EA therefore it's an EA game it's no where near an indie game.

If you think this is an indie games so is all Bioware and DICE games :P

They are all developed on the Frostbite 3 engine :)

dragon823523d ago

You people need to learn what the term "Indie" means!! This is a game that is owned and funded by EA. This is about as far from "Indie" as you can possibly get. This falls in the same category as Battlefield and Call of Duty.

ITPython3523d ago

You know EA is kicking themselves real hard for this mistake. First it was Titanfall, now this. Wonder when EA will realize that doing a deal with the devil never turns out well.

I'm sure Tomb Raiders publisher is thinking twice about their timed exclusive deal with MS now, I mean it doesn't make much sense to withhold a game off a competing console that has 2x's the install base and only grows larger and further from the competition each week. A games initial hype is priceless, and once you lose that window of opportunity, it is devastating for sales.

If EA does another timed exclusive on a whole game with MS (not just DLC) I think we can safely assume that MS agreed to cover the costs of millions of lost sales plus some extra stomping around cash for good measure. Amazing the efforts MS goes to hold back the PS brand (and consequently, gaming), shame they don't put all those billions of dollars into first party studios.

jmac533523d ago

MS is dousing these publishers in cash. EA most definitely will shorten the timed exclusivity window so as to recoup on the other platforms. Because like they found out with this game, if you wait too long, no one will care.

Bennibop3523d ago

1st few weeks sales favour x1 as it was a launch game, however I am sure long term sales will favour ps4 as higher install Base.

I am not so bothered about Microsoft having timed exclusives as it means when released on ps4 it cheaper as all dlc is included usually and we get better resolution and frame rate. I don't think these deals help x1 image and in my opinion a lack of games (I can and will be able to play pretty much everything on x1 on ps4 and pc.) have not turned my x1 on in two months as I will only play exclusives on it using ps4 for multiplies.

ITPython3522d ago (Edited 3522d ago )

You do realize that Axios2 is one of the biggest XB1 trolls on this site, right?

You would be mistaken to take his post at face value, as it is actually just another way to stealth troll the PS community.

GribbleGrunger3524d ago

I don't think this is a surprise to anyone. Hopefully EA will eventually learn from this.

Godmars2903524d ago

Learn what? Only release on the Xbox?

Enemy3524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

Learn that if they're going to do timed exclusives, expect bad sales on other platforms. People move on.

GribbleGrunger3524d ago

As, Enemy says, EA need to learn that exposure is more important in the long term than money in the short term. EA aren't an Indie developer with limited resources, they're a huge publisher that clearly cut a deal with MS for timed exclusivity.

badz1493523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

EA executives must be really kicking themselves at the nuts at the moment for the wrong horse they decided to bet before the gen even started. no matter how you good your game is, giving the short end of the stick to the bigger install base is never gonna turn out good in the end.

Titanfall and PVZ:GW both had a potential to be a huge hit for this gen from the get go but being advertised exclusively for the lower selling platform has taken away a lot of that potential.

I'm not saying that they should make it as PS4 exclusive but both game screams MULTIPLATFORM! nah...maybe that's just me, seeing as it has been a while since EA makes any exclusive...but whatever. just don't blame the other platforms if your games are not selling well if you have ditched them in the first place. that's what I'm trying to say.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3523d ago
Godmars2903524d ago

"EA need to learn that exposure is more important in the long term than money in the short term."

And yet that is literally what they've been doing for nearly an entire console generation: putting short term gains before long term ones.

Hell, considering their long standing reputation in regards to release dates and stock/shareholder concerns, they've been doing it from almost the beginning.

Nevermind that they firs gained attention by putting out *GOOD* games.

InTheLab3524d ago

Hope Square learns from this as the same will happen with Rise of the Tomb Raider.

andibandit3524d ago

THis has been going on so long, that I think it's the rest of us who will learn, that as long as we dont know the layout of the deals being made, we are just shooting from the hip.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan3524d ago

Exactly, this is a 6 months old game, the hype is gone so why would the PS4 owners run to get it unless they eagerly wanted to play it. Same goes for the Tomb Raider's sequel.

These are the games I buy from the bargain bin when there's a slow gaming month.

jmac533523d ago

HanzoHattori3524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

The delayed release on PlayStation platforms was probably the cause. I haven't seen any timed exclusives sell more copies after being released on other platforms. This is slightly off topic, but the same thing will probably happen when Rise Of The Tomb Raider is released on PlayStation platforms. If developers pay attention to these statistics, they wouldn't agree to have a timed exclusive on a console platform with a lower install base. Who knows? I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

cl19833524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

Sorry miss read what you wrote originally.

AndrewLB3523d ago

I highly doubt sales are actually lost because the "other console" got a timed exclusive. Tomb Raider fans are going to buy the game regardless of Xbone getting the game first. I have yet to hear of a single PS4 fanboy claiming that he'll never buy Planetside 2 because it was a PC Exclusive for the last two years. Same goes for Final Fantasy XIV.

Had the first few timed exclusives shown evidence that this practice hurt long term sales figures, they would not be doing it today.

Seafort3523d ago

It's probably because you can't buy Planetside 2 as it's free to play :P

Big difference between a F2P MMO and a $60 retail game.

slinky1234563524d ago

It was delayed a long time on PS4. Also, it's quite expensive for what it is and people knowing about the game already it's no surprise. Sony didn't try to market it out as much really.

MRMagoo1233524d ago

it was $49 in Australia, considering its more fun than titanfall and cheaper, I cant say it is overpriced for what it is.

iiwii3523d ago

It's $39 here in the US and I picked it up for the PS4 just to have something on the lighter side to play. It's pretty fun, and will hold me over until Destiny gets here next week. I could honestly recommend this to anyone of any age to play.

BTW, for someone who posted above, I think the XB1 and PS4 were the only versions that got split screen options.

Majin-vegeta3524d ago

I'll just wait until it goes on PS+.

ChronoJoe3524d ago

It would be a good game for Plus, certainly.

bleedsoe9mm3524d ago

you think we'll be seeing EA games on ps+ or ps now after not playing ball with ea on EA access , can't see it happening .

admiralvic3524d ago

Unlikely.

If EA was going to go that direction, then they wouldn't have given Sony Dead Space 3 2 months ago and Crysis 3 this month. As far as PVZ goes, I don't think we will get it as there isn't much reason for EA to give it away.

So far Pop Cap has been awesome and included substantial content as part of the games updates, which means there is no increase in DLC sales to look forward to outside of people purchasing microtransactions (I don't see many doing that or enough where EA would notice). In all and all, the only reason we might see it offered is due to the always online nature working in the favor of Sony / M$, but I just don't see it happening.

ChronoJoe3524d ago

@Admiralvic

I think your wrong about there not being much reason to see Garden Warfare on Plus. It's clear the game isn't selling, even on XBOXONE it's only sold 250k units so far, and I doubt it'll even make that on PS4.

So why not give it away? The game has an incredibly robust microtransaction system so it could be very profitable for EA as a Playstation Plus game.

bleedsoe9mm3524d ago (Edited 3524d ago )

@admiralvic
possibly but Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 aren't appart of ea access , Ea could have included 360 and potentially ps3 in EA access but they didn't . much more likely to see PVZ on ea access long before you see it on any sony service .
