Naughty Dog Animation Lead: “We Run Out of Time and Resources Before We Run Out of Memory”

Animation is often a less known discipline within game development, partly because of its complexity, and partly because most tend to look at less subtle elements of the scene like models and textures. With its cinematic approach to game design, Naughty Dog is definitely a rand of excellence in animation, and it’s at the forefront of development on the next generation of console.

That’s why the studio’s Lead Character Animator Jeremy Yates is one of the men best positioned to tell if the industry is finally getting close to having games in which every animation is unique given today’s hardware resources.

OT: The trailer was almost movie like for this game, cant wait for gameplay will blow The Order out of the water.

Edit: @ abriel no, just seemed funny to rob him of his limelight for once.

Has this really become a competition? ^_^;;

No but serious, I'm glad memory isn't an issue

ShugaCane3962d ago

This is why I love ND. They're always showing their faith in technology and somehow they manage to prove that their were right about it. Every game they make is just an evidence of their being visionnaries.

The gameplay will undoubtedly look great, but why does it have to "blow The Order out of the water" to mean something? Just be happy that footage will soon be shown.

SpinalRemains1383962d ago

Its not that it has to. It just does.

The Order looks weak

HeWhoWalks3962d ago (Edited 3962d ago )

@ Spinal: What's weak is your opinion. The majority of previews and gamer previews all say the same thing - The Order's visuals are top notch. We're not talking about the way the game plays.

Besides, how can Uncharted 4's GAMEPLAY blow The Order's out of the water when we've yet to see any?

Ezz20133962d ago

@spinalremains138

**The Order looks weak**

What ?!
are you talking about The Order 1886 graphics ?!

bouzebbal3962d ago

nice to hear the The Order is one of the graphical monsters, and it's RAD's first title on consoles!
Future is bright on PS4

solar3962d ago

i still dont understand all the hype over that UC4 trailer. UC2 is one of my fav games of all time, but it is a very narrow cut scene with no resources used on anything but a small window.

Crysis had the same level of detail in 2007. if not more.

Hk85karlsson3962d ago

No. Crysis is still one of the most overhyped games.
It looked really good. But not nearly as good as some of the PC people make it sound like.
Oh, it did, I'm sorry.

IF, U had a 1000$ PC

CrowbaitBob3961d ago

I've been wondering about all the hype around these CGI trailers that show zero gameplay. When The Order was announced there was literally zero known about the gameplay yet people were losing their minds about it.

Then the Uncharted trailer pops up and it's lauded as the greatest graphical achievement since the invention of the eyeball. SMH

You don't have to be a hater to wonder why people get so excited about what amounts to nothing more than a cutscene.

MegaRay3962d ago

Yeah... NO. Wait until he come back from all his ninja duties and you'll never EVER be first :P

Azzanation3961d ago

Can you imagine what ND could do if they made this game for PC? Honestly unlimited hardware vs limited hardware. One can only dream.

that is great so after uncharted 4 there will still be some juice to squeeze out of the ps4. awesome :D after seeing what they did with last of us on ps3 i am totally convinced it will only get better. now lets all hope for savage starlight ^^

Abriael3962d ago

Doubt that kind of juice will be squeezed, unless someone invents motion capture so advanced that it doesn't require manual tweaking, or a completely different way to animate characters.

equal_youth3962d ago

who knows we still have a few years to go with this generation and naughty dog has surprised me in a lot of ways the past generation. i am all for wait and see how it is going for them this time around. but your right. i may put it in the wrong light as i wrote my comment. i meant it by graphical nd standards and was not talking about the animations. sometimes i think games look and play so great how can we even go further and every year i get surprised by new tech and some really skilled devs.

ps5fanboy3962d ago

If the game looks like the reveal...wow.

Orbilator3962d ago

Nd has that thing going on. Yeah we squeezed everything out of console with uncharted, then uncharted 2 drops and its awesome, uncharted 3 does it again and the they drop TLOU on us and were left thinking, do they even know what limits are coz every game they extend them.

combatcash3962d ago

Imo Uncharted 2 was the best looking game out of the 3 and last of us surely matched it.

SoapShoes3962d ago

Uhhh Uncharted 3 certainly had better graphics than 2. 2 was a huge leap but 3 still improved on it with better character models and more detail.

Clunkyd3962d ago

Yeah, U3 had better shadows and lighting and overall it looked better than U2.

ShowGun9013962d ago

i think its just that the jump was...

U1<<<<<U2
U2<<U3

...so it wasn't as noticable.

TLoU looked incredible though.

Rimeskeem3962d ago

1080p 60 FPS with graphics like the trailer. Even PC elitists would be amazed.

SpinalRemains1383962d ago

They'll be too busy flooding SONY servers.

combatcash3962d ago

Is that what they are targeting?

Rimeskeem3962d ago

They confirmed it would be 60fps during reveal and are aiming for 1080p (it's naughty dog). They said the trailer was a cutscene supposebly.

johndoe112113962d ago (Edited 3962d ago )

@sckipt

No they did not, they said it was in-game, in engine. At no point did they say it was cut scene. in fact two days later ND themselves stated that they didn't think it was good enough to be considered a cut scene.

solar3962d ago

what? amazed at 1080p? you gotta be kidding me mate. i love the Uncharted series just like everyone else, but saying PC gamers are gonna be amazed at a game just because of resolution and FPS? that is laughable.

combatcash3962d ago

@Solar,

I think what he meant is that even pc gamers will be amazed if the gameplay graphics match the recent trailer and runs at 1080p/60fps. That would be really impressive. At the moment I don't think there's a pc game with that kind of quality in graphics. Although there's many games coming up on pc that will really be impressive.

The Making of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End | Episode 5: In The End | PS4

In this episode, the folks at Naughty Dog and the cast of the Uncharted series open up about their love for the characters and the emotional journey they’ve taken across the series of games.
The team also discuss their appreciation of the fans and how the game’s success owes a lot to the passion of the fans of the Uncharted series.

Several years after his last adventure, retired fortune hunter Nathan Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. With the stakes much more personal, Drake embarks on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. His greatest adventure will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.

Aloy-Boyfriend3378d ago

Goddamn Naughty Doge! You are making is very hard to let this be the last in the series. This is the true Crushing difficulty

3378d ago
littlezizu3378d ago

Game looks absolutely Stunning. Amount of details is simply unbelievable. ND once again raised the bar.

DerekFlint0073378d ago

For those who may wish to see more on Uncharted 4. Greg Miller has just announced that Kinda Funny will post an Uncharted 4 let's play this Monday at 7am PT.

This was another superb developer insight video from the incredible team at Naughty Dog.

DragonDDark3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

This made me choke. :(
I know that this game will stand out this year.. I might be a little biased but this feeling, man. :|

-Foxtrot3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

It's a shame with the trailers, these making of videos and the like there's hardly anything on Elena, except the scenes of her tearing up or complaining to Drake. Not even one with a gun in her hand. She better not have been pushed back completely in the last ever game. She's a badass who deserves to be there with Drake through most of the game. Even Sully is lacking :|

EDIT

Oh look disagrees because I said one little bad thing about the game which doesn't even relate to the quality/actual game but more of a personal opinion to one of the strongest, well made female characters of last gen. N4G the home of sensitive gamers. You know the funny thing. You can go on the forums (of die hard Uncharted fans) and have a decent discussion on this but if you mention it here with a simple, average comment you're torn apart like you hate the entire game.

DragonDDark3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

Well, maybe just maybe, she will play a big factor in the plot and they don't want to spoil anything...?

-Foxtrot3378d ago

Hopefully but I really don't think how she would be a spoiler in anything

Unless she comes into it at the end after Sam betrays Drake.

I thought this was just a Drakes Fortune costume

http://playstationna.i.lith...

But the lower half of her outfit is different. Since it's called Island Elena I'm wondering if she goes with Drake near the end.

TwoForce3378d ago

Dude, can you really need to stop with fan service ? This is about Drake last Journey even his love one, his best friend and his brother. Sully is getting old and Elena is tired of treasure hunting and want to live a normal life. Drake will do any necessary to protect his friends even he have to lie. This is about his personal life issue that need to get it done. Drake was about done his treasure hunting but his brother need his help to finish one last job.

-Foxtrot3378d ago

Oh but shoving Chloe into Uncharted 3 wasn't fan service?

No it's not just Drakes last journey, it's about the journey all these characters have taken. They even talk about this in the making of videos and how they have evolved. They've become such a big part in Drakes life and the last game should be to honour these characters we've grown with since the very first game. Not see them to a step back. Yet despite being the last game the focus on these guys are being shoved away for the out of the blue long lost brother storyline.

I'm sorry but do you really want to see Elena moaning at Drake the entire game, that's not her. She's a strong character and should of gladly went with Drake. The story should have been created to strike home to Elena aswell, something to motivate her to go with him.

seppo913378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

@fox No it wasn't, both she and cutter were supposed to have a bigger role but they got cut.

Nothing says Elena won't have a big role in this.

Edit: It's the last Uncharted, it should celebrate the series yes, but they shouldn't make forced choices that could impact the story because of fan service.

I want Chloe in this, but if she doesn't have a purpose in the story I would be fine if they skip her. Will main her online anyway.

DragonDDark3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

If you're questioning the spoiler I'll give the possibilities:

1. She dies.
2. She's pregnant (she can't go treasure hunting).
3. Maybe she had a miscarriage?
4. As stated by @TwoForce, she left that life a long time ago and doesn't want to get involved.
Etc etc..
Or maybe she will go with nate.
See anything can happen. Lots of possibilities and small scenes can bring lots of key plot points. ND has been great in hiding spoilers imo.

98xpresent3378d ago

The miscarriage 1 to me would be very emotional.

98xpresent3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

But again I don't think ND would end the series on a sad note

BlakHavoc3378d ago

This game will have crushing moments without a doubt, but I don't believe they'd end the game on a sad note. I'm also finding it hard to believe though that out of Drake, Elena, Sam, and Sully, someone's going to die lol.

TwoForce3378d ago

I'm really like Elena. I do, but i looked at her eyes and her feelings. She doesn't want to Drake to risk any more of this.

BlakHavoc3378d ago

You're a pessimist aren't you? I think in this game most of the characters except for Sam will be kind of tired of treasure hunting, clearly Elena was promised that Drake was done pursuing that life style, so she appears upset and betrayed. I think it'd be kind of corny if she decides to pick up a gun and go hunting for the pirate treasure with Drake honestly. This game should be about Drakes relationships with all the main characters and how they're affected in this final installment.

Aloy-Boyfriend3378d ago (Edited 3378d ago )

I disagree with uou because this is Nate's adventure, not Elena's. She had her moments in U2 and U3. How is Elena handling a gun fan service at all?

If you can't stand disagrees, then don't speak

BlakHavoc3378d ago

Oh and u seem obsessed with Elena having a huge role in the game, she played that role in the entire series and will have a role in UC4. Buts the games protagonist is Drake, not Elena.

Uncharted 4 to feature stealth aspects from The Last of Us

As studios continue to branch out and develop new experiences and new franchises, it's natural that they take parts from existing brands and place them into new ones. Well, for Naughty Dog, it's the other way around.

bouzebbal3383d ago

i hope they still remain very different games.

DigitalRaptor3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

It looks more than great. It looks masterful.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Aside from certain people leaving the project, The Last of Us and the lessons learned from making that game is the best thing to ever happen to Uncharted 4. So much that they're going all out and making this truly the game to beat.

Yet, they respect what makes Uncharted what it is. They know not to make it unrecognisably dark or too mechanically similar to TLoU, but also know that they have to wrap things up and perhaps explore areas they didn't before. No - this is still an Uncharted game, through and through, but it's enhanced and upgraded in the most amazing of ways. They've improved everything, overhauling systems to truly leverage next-gen technology.

Loving how they've crafted the advanced AI, the dynamic stealth additions, the incredible melee system and traversal mechanics. They've also applied their lessons to the multiplayer too, and it shows. TLoU and UC4 are two of the standout MP games in recent years. Makes me very, very excited for the work that will be going into The Last of Us 2.

Aloy-Boyfriend3383d ago

Uncharted 4 will be Naughty Doge's best work yet by applying all the experince they've earned with this series and TLoU.

Now how about bringing stealth back to the multiplayer.

ShadowKnight3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

I know right. Especially since they have the stealth perk in the multiplayer

sullynathan3383d ago

I don't know any third person shooty type game where stealth works well. Even people complained about in MGSO.

sullynathan3383d ago

TLOU isn't a stealth game, albeit not a good one.

akurtz3382d ago

if you really believe that, then you must not be good at stealth

Free_Fro3383d ago

I'm actually tired of talking about the game.

I jus' wanna play it. .

May day...
-

angelsx3383d ago

Hopefully the single is long enough

jb2273383d ago

That's my only concern, I know it'll be great I just want to be sure that there's a lot of it...UC3 was a little on the short side although for me it was quality back to front so I can't complain to much.

Seems like if it's meant to be paced in combat similarly to TLOU then we may be looking at a 12-15 hour playthrough, then if they kept that dedicated deeper treasure hunting system in place from the announcement and there are a decent handful of dialogue choices there will be a lot of great replay value as well.

sullynathan3383d ago

It will be 6 - 8 hours on normal difficulty like the previous uncharteds. More if you want to find all collectibles or beat it on harder difficulties.

jb2273383d ago

Any source for that or just speculation? Also, I don't see how anyone beat any of the 3 Uncharteds in 6 hours unless they are playing on very easy & absolutely flying through...even then it'd be a stretch...HowLongToBeat.com has UC1 at 8 hours for the main story alone, UC2 at 11 hours & UC3 at 9, and even that is assuming you aren't scouring the environment for collectibles & to just admire the scenery.

Considering the environments in this game are obviously much bigger than anything we've seen before (10x bigger if the devs themselves are to be believed), I highly doubt this will be a 6 hour game for someone's first playthrough.

sullynathan3383d ago

@jb227 I beat all the uncharted games within an 8 hour period. Around 4 - 6 hours the 2nd time around. Why would I expect the 4th entry to be astronomically shorter or longer?
Having larger environments doesn't always attribute to making a game take longer to beat.

Don't take those sites seriously.

jb2273383d ago

I was just using that site as a reference (and I've also typically found their figures to be very accurate in terms of my personal play times), but I've played all 3 around a half dozen times each & I've never completed any of them in 4 hours, even on very easy difficulty...good on you if you can beat them that quick, but even 8 hours for any single UC title on first playthrough would be a very speedy playthrough for me...took me closer to 12 for UC2 & a bit longer when I explored the environments.

I don't necessarily know if Uc4 will be long, but I don't expect it to be a 4 hour game. As far as the larger environments, they take longer to traverse so I'd assume the larger environment can most definitely end up in a longer playtime, may not be a given but it's definitely a logical conclusion. Also there's the treasure hunting and optional side dialogue & living worlds to experience, things that the last games simply didn't have. TLOU took me around 15 hours to beat because I explored every inch & took my time w/ it, and seeing as how this one has a similar design philosophy, I honestly think this game will be the longest of the series yet, but we won't know until it ships really.

sullynathan3383d ago

@jb227 those sites greatly inflate the amount of time it takes to beat a game. I just wander what you were doing in an Uncharted game that would take you 12 hours to beat it, maybe watching cutscenes? I don't count that in terms of how long it takes to beat a game.

TLOU can take twice as long to beat as an Uncharted game because it is slower paced, has more content in its singleplayer and a much longer game. This separates it from Uncharted. Uncharted does not share a lot of the same things TLOU has

kraenk123382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

Except for U3 which was around that mark the games were much longer, especially U2 which was 12-15 hours on harder difficulty.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3382d ago
DigitalRaptor3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

I trust that it will be long enough for the series, perhaps longer by those standards.

My average for all 3 Uncharted games was 10-12 hours. I explored.
I clocked 19 hours, in my first playthrough of The Last of Us.

With the extra gameplay options, and more wide open levels with inspiration taken from TLoU, I think it will sit somewhere on the scale of 12-15 hours, which would be perfect.

GribbleGrunger3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

The singleplayer weighs in at 48gb so we're going to get a pretty big game. I'm guessing around the same length TLOU was with replayability because of branching paths.

You've also got to remember that this game will have the same level of character interactions TLOU did. If you'd never stood still enough in TLOU you would never have heard a pun from Ellie's pun book. If you hadn't stood near the arcade machine you would never have heard Ellie telling you about the game and her friend Riley.

All these little hidden details to find will make replaying the game and choosing a different path really interesting.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3382d ago
retrogamer093383d ago

I really hope they don't do sections of the game where you have like 3 bullets and you have to beat levels with forced stealth. That's what really turned me off of TLOU. The stealth just didn't appeal to me. Just make it a shoot em up type of game with the options to do the mission stealth or run and gun it.

SCW19823383d ago

Are you talking about when Joel is hanging upside down? Conserving ammo and being smart about how much resources you use and when you use them is what makes TLOU great.

Aloy-Boyfriend3383d ago

I never had that issue. I saved the bullets for wneh the infected spotted me. I used stealth mostly. Playing easier difficulties gives you more bullets also. Harder difficulties you gotta be smart

jb2273383d ago

I highly doubt they will go that route for UC4...the ammo was scarce in TLOU for a story reason, and conversely the ammo in Uc4 would be plentiful considering you are fighting highly trained & heavily armed mercenaries...more ammo will always just be a kill away.

TLOU never had any forced stealth sections so it seems to me like what they are saying is that stealth is a more viable option this time around, something you can do if you choose, and it'll be reminiscent to TLOU in the way it's utilized.

I don't think you have to worry, from everything that's been shown, this is still an Uncharted game through & through, just embellished by some of the better mechanics from TLOU that may fit.

Sparta073383d ago

@ retro, TLOU is a survival horror and uncharted is not.
That was the point of TLOU you had to be smart when to use ammo.
can't wait for uncharted, they already have my money. May can't come soon enough

Imalwaysright3383d ago

I wouldn't call TloU a survival horror. There is no horror in it.

Sparta073383d ago

@ imalwaysright, then what would you call it!? Of course is horror. Is almost like resident evil except is not zombies your fighting against. Your fighting against different types of infected

Imalwaysright3383d ago

I would call it survival action adventure game. There is absolutely nothing horrific in the game from atmosphere to the infected. RE up until RE5 had creepy and opressive atmosphere, something that I never experienced in TloU.

one2thr3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

@Imalwaysright

Horror

noun  hor·ror\ ˈhȯr-ər,ˈhär-\

: a very strong feeling of fear, dread, and shock

: the quality of something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock : the horrible or shocking quality or character of something

: something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock : something that is shocking and horrible

Clickers, and the part where you play as Ellie in the restaurant, and Boomers on grounded.(There are way more horrific moments) plus no listening perk, had me on edge.

The Last of Us, definitely has horror in it.

Imalwaysright3382d ago

Nothing scary about the clickers and the Ellie segment. Funny how my comment gets 8 disagrees but comment #9.1.1 on this thread gets 9 agrees for saying the same exact thing. This website is hilarious.
