Sunset Overdrive Vs. The Master Chief Collection: Which One Is The Best Reason To Buy An Xbox One

Both titles look to be awesome but for buyers forced with making a hard choice, which game is best for new Xbox One owners and current owners to get for the most enjoyment? Sunset Overdive offers quirky action and intensely fun multiplay, but The Master Chief Collection offers tons of games, maps, and Halo 5 Beta access.

Abash3916d ago

One game isn't a good reason to buy a console

Garethvk3916d ago

I agree but if your a person who just paid out $399.99 for an Xbox One and can only afford one game at $59.99 then of the two newer games coming there is a hard choice ahead.

iamnsuperman3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

Which probably means, for that person, Halo is the safe bet while Sunset Overdrive is the risk

DanielGearSolid3916d ago

Doesn't that make the SO bundle the obvious choice?

It includes the game free

sonarus3916d ago

i might buy a console just for certain games. god of war, metal gear solid would probably be at the top of that list. I bought a psp just to play metal gear portable even though i hate handheld gaming. i think i left my psp on a plane and didnt even miss it smh.

I am not the biggest halo fan and i do generally like insomniac work so for me i would probably choose sunset overdrive. But i wouldn't buy an xbox for any one of those games to be honest

darthv723916d ago

Over the last 30+ years of gaming, I personally have never bought a console because of 1 game. I buy because of a plethora of good games.

As to this topic, both are good games deserving to be played. There are lots of good games out or coming out for all the consoles and all are deserving to be played. It's what they are made for.

one should never deny themselves the opportunity to play because of a lack of the proper platform. Pick up the platform as well as the titles and get your game on.

avengers19783916d ago

If you wanted one, I'd get the sunset overdrive bundle for 399.99$ and pick up the mcc collection... That would be your best bet.

user3672723916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

Com on dude...there is a pretty white Sunset Overdrive bundle for 399.99. It is not that difficult to figure it out what the best strategy is when wanting both games if you are a new buyer.

And you are contradicting yourself when you said "When a person just paid for a xb1" vs your quote from the heading of your own article "which one is the best reason to buy a xb1" as that quote pertains to people that hasn't jump in and bought one yet.

Boody-Bandit3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

Both.
Just purchase the SSO / X1 bundle and pick up MCC.

Me personally I would choose SSO but only because I'm Halo'd out. I have my eye on 5 but I don't want to replay the previous versions over again.

I use to be a big Halo fan but now I'm more into Gears and other shooters. Looking forward to playing SSO. I usually enjoy Insomniac titles.

Army_of_Darkness3916d ago

My choice would be sunset overdrive because for one, I don't really care for halo and secondly, sunset overdrive is an actual next gen game possibly worthy of a next gen console purchase....

4Sh0w3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

I never found any 1 game past or present THE ONLY REASON to buy a system, so I always find that type of serious talk about any 1 game sort of silly...but I get the general sentiment of what folks usually mean by that statement. I do have to say that the original Halo pretty much sold the original Xbox to me, I bought plenty of other games but I have never played any 1 game so much on any platform as I did back then playing with Halo.

That said Sunset Overdive is a sweet new IP full of vibrant colors and a huge lively open world city as your playground.

Halo MCC is the remaster of all remasters, 4 full highly rated games with all the maps(over 100), unified into a seamless UI hub, with upgraded graphics that can switch on the fly, beta for Halo5 included, Nightfall live series included, seriously it's so much content for just goddamm $60 it's freaking crazy not to buy it unless of course you have no interest in Halo.

Luckily I'm in a financial position where time not money is my problem, but I'm still gonna get BOTH and find the time to play them BOTH.

NukaCola3916d ago

HALO is the cop out choice. I think gamers regardless of console should embrace new IPs. So I would go with Sunset Overdrive which is easy for me since it's actually a nextgen game. I am pretty excited to play some Halo 2 MP though. Can't deny that has a good chance of being the go to online shooter.

donthate3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

Sure it is!

Why does it matter anyhow. If you get an Xbox One you can enjoy Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo: MCC not to mention other upcoming exclusives like Quantum Break and Halo 5.

The lineup is looking really really solid compared to the competition!

700p3916d ago

Exactly. Ill be getting the white xbox one which comes with Sunset overdrive and then get Halo mcc as the other exclusive. Then of course the long list of third party AAA games coming out during the holidays. Its a great year to be a gamer.

Fireseed3916d ago

My love affair with Killer Instinct would STRONGLY disagree with that.

-Alpha3916d ago

It's a good thing the Xbox has more than one game, then.

AngelicIceDiamond3916d ago

@Abash Whatever happened to system selling games? That's was a real thing last gen how come its suddenly not real now?

Would you agree if someone said UC4, 1 game isn't worth an entire system purchase?

Th4Freak3916d ago

I bought a PS4 only because of BF4 and I pre-ordered a XBO only for Sunset Overdrive.

Blaze9293916d ago

"One game isn't a good reason to buy a console"

You clearly, must have never played Halo.

Magicite3916d ago

Instead of Best he should have wrote Better.

BattleTorn3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

I don't get why people even attempt to justify their entire console purchase on a few games, or simple announced games.

I bought both considering them both to be investments that'll pay off over many many years.

I'd be silly to buy, sell, re-buy, re-sell, over and over - just because there isn't anything to play or interest me.

I'm sure we haven't heard of the best games for either consoles yet, of their generation.

nthstew3916d ago

agreed...none of these games makes me wanna buy a xbone

Paytaa3916d ago

Hey I bought a PS3 not too long after The Last of Us was revealed just for that game. As I waited for it to come out I found many gems like Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Resistance, Flower, MGS4, LBP, Heavenly Sword, and God of War. One game can sell a console and it allows people to find other games as well. TLOU is the reason I'm part of the "Playstation Nation" now. I love being on both sides of the war :)

lennonisgod3916d ago

I bought a Gamecube just to play Resident Evil 4, way back when.

Worth. It.

Sunset, forza horizon 2 and halo MCC are all reasons for me. Will be playing the crap out of all 3. Pretty sure halo MCC has me most excited, it's just so much content and original halo 2 multiplayer sealed the deal.

EDIT: @gareth luckily, you can buy the sunset xb1 for $399.99 AND still have money to buy a second game.

christocolus3916d ago

Same here. Just throw in Dc spotlight and Ori and my list will be complete.

So many reasons to own an xbox one right now. Halo mcc and SO are just two out many great titles coming to the system this fall.

nicksetzer13916d ago

I really am looking forward to dance central, fun to play with my wife. Best part only 10 bucks for the new one. Also, ori looks great too.

OpieWinston3916d ago

Big season. Forza Horizon 2 is supposed to have over 100 hours of gameplay.
I sank 30 hours into DR3 so I expect myself to sink even more into Sunset Overdrive.
Halo MCC will take over my life for the next several months after November... Halo 5 Guardians Beta + Halo 1-4 playthrough + Nightfall + Halo 2 Anniversary = One Happy Mofo right here.

Enough awesomeness to keep me coming back for more until my most anticipated games of 2015 hit.

Automatic793916d ago

@Opie couldn't have put it any better awesome line up games

tgunzz3916d ago

These two grandslams are just more reasons to own an xb1! By the way, been playing the trial for madden15, and the game is great. I went ahead and preordered it.

Lawboy23916d ago

I'm actually going to be downloading that this weekend...been playing a lot of FIFA 14 which I would have never played if it hadn't been for ea access

Lucreto3916d ago

Sunset Overdrive looks amazing but I hope it doesn't get overlooked with the other heavy hitters out the same time.

madjedi3916d ago (Edited 3916d ago )

It probably will just because it's a exclusive vs multiplats and it has a very distinct art style that might turn some people off.

@article

I can think of several titles already released and upcoming that make the xb1 more appealing than the halo hd collection. Not everyone got a 360 exclusively for halo.

Lucreto3916d ago

True but if you look at the sales numbers for the 3 huge titles out around the same time.

If it was my game I would not release it the same day as Assassin's Creed Unity, COD the next week and Halo the week after. All of which Microsoft is heavily promoting

Each of those games will do about 10 million each in its lifetime. Sunset might get 2 or 3 million. Looking on Amazon Sunset is not even in the top 100 bestsellers while Halo, COD and Unity have been these since they were announced. Even the Sunset bundle is no where to be seen.

Sunset Overdrive PS5 Port Ruled Out In Favor of Wolverine

Insomniac has confirmed that a PS5 port for 2014's Sunset Overdrive is not currently planned due to a focus on Marvel's Wolverine.

Wise decision, enough with old gen games already!!!

DarXyde319d ago

Sunset Overdrive was great...

I quite enjoyed the Demons' Souls remake too. I'm more or less begging for a Bloodborne sequel but would snap up a remake in a heartbeat.

Concertoine319d ago

I’d rather play an older unique game than a new Marvel game.

Im so blown out on Marvel, I can’t fathom how some people seem to have a bottomless appetite for it. A studio like Insomniac could do way better.

just_looken319d ago

Yep those poor devs are now a marvel sweat camp

This port and a quick pc patch to fix some bugs would have been a great idea i actualy forgot its not on ps5 you think it would have by now.

But hey they got like you said spiderman 2 pc port then spiderman 3 then spiderman collection with a wolverne/blade tossed in.

Amplitude319d ago

From everything we've seen, it's not like Insomniac is being forced to make Marvel games - it's clearly a good partnership that results in good games. They're still making Ratchet games anyway which is what really matters

Redemption-64319d ago

I have no idea why people like you keep making lies. Does it help you sleep at night? Where are you getting this information that they are either being forced or made into a Marvel camp? Sony approach Insomniac when they were independent to work on a Marvel IP and they picked Spider-Man. After the success of Spider-Man, it was Insomniac who pitched Wolverine to Sony/Marvel and was given the green light

-Foxtrot320d ago

This is new…it pretty much confirms it can happen eventually.

I thought Microsoft had publishing rights or something

Eonjay320d ago

Yes you are right. Microsoft allegedly has rights to the first game. Perhaps Microsoft wasted to sell it back to Sony in exchange for a port to Xbox Series. This would make the statement make more sense because I can't imagine that a port of this game even compares to the creation of Wolverine. So Microsoft probably requested a multiplat port.

gold_drake320d ago

yeh, the article says as much that MS does have publishing rights.

Profchaos320d ago

They do but Microsoft doesn't really care about the game they are considering Halo 1 for ps5 so this would be nothing

badz149320d ago

MS doesn't just have the publishing rights for SSoD, they also have publishing rights for the next 2 games in the franchise!

Zeke68319d ago

" The game was later pitched to various publishers, which rejected them because Insomniac demanded to retain ownership of the intellectual property. The project was later pitched to Microsoft Studios, which was eager to work with Insomniac. Microsoft allowed Insomniac to own the rights to the game"

Seems Insomniac own the rights after all...

badz149319d ago

@Zeke68

publishing rights is not the same as IP rights or ownership. for SSoD, Insomniac owns the IP, MS owns the publishing rights. just like Sony with Spider-man. Sony only owns the publishing rights to the movies and games but the IP is still owned by Marvel/Disney.

Zeke68319d ago

See my comment below. When Insomniac left M$ they let Microsoft keep their publishing rights for... drumroll... Xbox and PC.
If they want to release it on PS they can let Sony publish it.

Most people dont read bro..

Had it been their IP through and through it would of been an easy release for them and its a fun game, probably would of already happened. The people saying no ones cares about Sunset Overdrive would be saying cant wait to play in 4K 60 if announced

NotoriousWhiz319d ago

"Most people dont read bro.."

What I read is that Insomniac still own the rights to the game. Prove me wrong! ;)

Edit M$ owns publishing rights on Xbox, not Playstation as they never intended to release it on PS ever.

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

Christopher402d ago

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack402d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher402d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack402d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher402d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack402d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher402d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz149402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander1972401d ago

there was supposed to be a sequel. IG had it all planned but MS said no. And Sony wont greenlight a sequel if they cant get the first one away from MS. Plus... IG has other projects they moved on to anyways so...... yeah.

fr0sty402d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref402d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher402d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman402d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood402d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

401d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic401d ago

I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game - but, I loved it. It was one of my favorite games of it's time and that generation. Replayability could have been better, but I still managed to play it several times. I would have greatly appreciated a sequel and definitely would have been in line to pick it up..

Things happen.

Christopher402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

Not beloved enough for Xbox owners to buy it apparently, Xbox was the worst possible audience for that game.

Obscure_Observer402d ago

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

PhillyDonJawn402d ago

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

PrinceOfAnger402d ago

Very fun game that need a sequel.

-Foxtrot402d ago

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

Tacoboto402d ago

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Christopher402d ago

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

darthv72402d ago

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

badz149401d ago

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv72402d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.
