Phil Fish Disappears off Twitter... Again

Phil Fish, developer of Fez and angry social media person, has deleted his Twitter account... again. The last time was because of video game journalists apparently not respecting him enough, and this latest is probably linked to the Zoe Quinn incident, of which he placed himself right slap bang in the centre. Whether it's an attempt to deprive us all of access to his greatness, or if he'd just genuinely had enough of being pulled through the wringer, is unknown at this point.

I respect Phil Fish. I like his outspoken attitude, reminds me of David Jaffe. But, saying he won't make Fez 2 because we (gamers) don't deserve it is complete bullshit.

I don't expect developers to bow down to us like most gamers think they should do, but to hold his work so far above us as if we were even asking for it is a little much. He needs to get down from his pedestal.

matgrowcott3536d ago

See, I don't think he is like Jaffe. Jaffe said what he thought, sure, but at least he had his head screwed on. At least he had limitations, because he was part of the industry proper.

Fish thinks that gamers should live up to whatever social idealism he's conjured up on a given day, and will bully, intimidate and otherwise act unprofessionally towards anybody who disagrees (even if they'd agreed on everything up until that morning). And why does he feel he has this power? It's based on that one game released a few years ago that got mostly 7s and 8s, and a bunch of angry rants that's meant he's never outside the echo chamber of other social justice warriors.

Shacks3536d ago

Yeah I see that in him sure, but most people are like that. I can't count how many people stopped following me on twitter or whatever over on simply disagreement.

He does know how to act like a whiny brat that obviously always got what he wanted as a kid.

I know the video is off topic, but I don't respect Phil due to 16:16 and the fact that he would support someone as awful for gaming as Z.Q.

OT: does Phil seem a little different? His behaviour is childish, along with his perception of reality, so if he does have a condition then he can't help it, but if not he's just a one hit wonder

hkgamer3535d ago

jaffe spoke his mind and never really said fuck off to his fans. he always talked about the industry and how he wants to make more money and make a game that is based purely on gameplay. basically a battle arena type game with mechanics that showed skills.

phil fish however is plain out rude, probably was never ready to be so popular on social networks. feel sorry for him.

Agheil3535d ago

Why doesn't everyone leave this guy alone .... You all are making his voice have weight. He says something and everyone flips out....

I don't mind outspoken people (I am one). I even like when people have such strong convictions. What I do mind is arrogance, and a lack of tact and respect.

You don't have to agree with anything other people say, and even loose your cool every now and then when a debate gets heated. But you never tell someone to go suck a D*** and expect to be taken seriously without an apology for lowering yourself to a 13 year old (or younger)standards.

He needs to grow up before he comes back.

Death3536d ago

From what I can see, Phil is a one hit wonder. I don't think it's so much the fans not deserving a Fez2 as much it is Phil doesn't know what to do to follow it up. Clearly he is insecure which is why he lashes out at the very people that supported him. He's distancing himself from the pressure of not living up to other peoples expectations.

Not all Indie devs are cut from the same cloth. For some there is a reason why they haven't made it in the industry. Phil seems too unstable to be employable.

XtraTrstrL3536d ago

Who's even been crying for Fez 2 recently? It's him bringing it up, cuz he needs the $$$ to support his lifestyle he began after bags of money from Fez fell in his lap. He's trying to get some twitter activity going strong on it so he can come around like some hero. Instead, he gets nothing, so he's lashing out and throwing fits.

WeAreLegion3536d ago

Jaffe is cool. Phil is a moron.

Orionsangel3536d ago

Shacks, the difference is that Fish is part of a large industry whether he likes it or not, what he says can have consequences in the industry. I understand getting upset over trolls tweeting you on Twitter, but be more professional. You think you're the first high profile developer who got attacked on twitter? He obviously has thin skin and needs anger management. Some people just aren't cut out for this industry. The trolls beat him and the only losers here are the gamers who wanted to play Fez 2.

Godmars2903536d ago

"I respect Phil Fish."

Well, I don't.

Worse, I find that the more I hear of him, the less I'm able to wish indifference much less good will upon someone I'm none to happy about being a member of the same species.

At the absolute very least I pray that he will never respawn.

Torque_CS_Lewith3536d ago

Quitting twitter is the adult version of running away from home. You are just doing it for attention and everybody knows you'll be back.

Patrick_pk443536d ago

The man is ignorant and believes he is always in the right. Hipster Phil created a one hit wonder and he knows exactly that if he creates another game it will be a failure. He is one of the biggest idiots I have seen in the past few years. He also defend Zoe Quinn, I assume sleeps with that ugly ass too.

He's busy building larger soap box to preach upon.

I like certain things Phil Fish has to say, but I wish he'd put all that passion and rage into another game. He's obviously a talented developer.

DarkOcelet3536d ago

I hope he dissappears for good.

ZoidsRaven3536d ago

I'm sure he is waiting for his big moment again. 7_7

SilentNegotiator3536d ago

I hope he gets his personal issues together and makes another award winning game.

IcicleTrepan3536d ago

I was all for giving the guy a chance after the last time but now he's just getting ridiculous and repeating past bad behaviour. he needs to hire a PR person and piss off.

-Foxtrot3536d ago

I really wish someone would make a game similar to Fez but call it Zef Two...would love to see his reactions over that one.

Gh05t3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

Better have a good lawyer first, but that would be fun to watch unfold... from a spectator point of view.

-Foxtrot3536d ago

I just want to see him rage....so much he'll explode :)

vork773536d ago

If the game is a free indie game he cant sue

Gh05t3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

I couldn't even imagine the storm that would come out. It would be pretty epic. Sharknado meets the day after tomorrow with the media, developers, and gamers attention on that.

AWESOME!

The 10th Rider3536d ago

I was thinking 'Fedora.' Someone needs to hit up kickstarter with that or something.

Flyingdog6703536d ago

Can we just stop talking about the guy?? He's an a**hole, just leave it at that. Stop feeding him attention.

Cryptcuzz3536d ago

Admittedly, I thought Fez was quite fun to play, but yes, he is an a**hole and shouldn't be getting more attention.

Our Interview with Allistair Pinsof Part 2 – Relationships in Indie Gaming

This is a great interview, pretty much reminds you why GamerGate was set up in the first place, to counter "fishy" stuff like this in the industry

I mean this is just Indie stuff can you imagine the situation with big developers and what sites do to get on their good side.

Relientk773369d ago

Not a big fan of Phil Fish

he's honestly just a d*ck

-Foxtrot3369d ago

It's funny how the more his facial hair grew the bigger his ego got.

It's like his ego pushed his hair out quicker and he couldn't be arsed to shave constantly.

elninels3368d ago

In response to that comment phil fish has cancelled yet another project.

003369d ago

those people really are a bunch of scumbags.

garos823369d ago

Totally disgusting that the industry has come to this.

Im not surprised to be honest but let this be a lesson to all those people smearing #gamergate as a hate group and a misogynistic movement. This is what we fight for and this is the sh*t that needs to stop.

Phil Fish is a thief and the reasons as to why Fez 2 will never come to fruition is because he is a talent less hack

The_Mad_Monarch3368d ago

Both of the interviews with Pinsof have been fantastic. Hope this gets all the exposure it can.

garos823368d ago

most publications seem to be ignoring it hoping it disappears

im looking at you giantbomb r/games r/gaming polygon gamasutra and all you corrupt fools

Top 5 Indie Game Developer Meltdowns

(CriticalIndieGamer) Indie gaming is a serious business these days, but it is sometimes a little too serious for my liking. An industry that was started for fun has become the domain of a few sanctimonious, self-aggrandizing, and downright annoying developers. Admittedly, some small part of me secretly enjoys the controversy courted by these mavericks, so let’s take a look at five of my favourite game developer meltdowns.

Indie Devs Really Need PR Help

From EGMR, "Indie games can be amazing experiences where quality truly shines through, but many a time the same cannot be said of the developers behind some of these games. Over the past year, I had my own experiences and witnessed a lack of PR sensibilities, and in some instances professionalism when indies communicated with members of the press. What I have noticed quite frequent is the lack of tact some developers have when communicating in a public forum, which needs to be highlighted. It is quite evident that some developers don’t realise that their social media feeds are a public forum, and that what you say in a public online context can have some real consequences."
