Are we sure these are DLC cups? They could possibly be unused images... Sounds great if they are DLC's.

ZAF3962d ago

looks fake, but i wish they were real

N4g_null3961d ago

In away it wouldn't matter because most of Nintendo dlc is free. Even if it was there it would mean you just get a bigger game. Who knows maybe those are the battle maps everyone wanted. Would be sweet if true.

-Foxtrot3962d ago

Honest question but if this is true how cold you find out about DLC being made if the DLC is made after the game has went gold and shipped?

admiralvic3962d ago

"but if this is true"

I wouldn't say it was true or false, just bad reporting. What was found were 4 unused images, which could mean a number of things like Nintendo opted out of using them for existing cups, 4 cups were scrapped or a number of other things up to and including DLC. Instead of going with a more neutral "4 mysterious cup icons found in Mario Kart 8," they just jumped to the conclusion it was DLC for whatever reason.

With that being said, when you look into it people made a pretty strong case for these just being scrapped icons. To give you an idea, RRD_Mindscarp posted a comparison here ( http://mkboards.com/forums/... ) and you can see that the final images look quite a bit different. These include things like the medals looking like enamel medals / pins (sorry if this is hard to understand) and gold leafs / stars in the background.

"how cold you find out about DLC being made if the DLC is made after the game has went gold and shipped?"

Not to get too far off topic, but data mining can actually find a lot of interesting information if you look around. To give you an idea, there might be a single line of code that mentions DLC and then lists a cup name or you might find characters not present in the game mentioned in a character listing (something like this lead to the Injustice DLC characters getting revealed early). The only downside is that it can be hard to tell just what you're looking at.

Like just because something is mentioned, doesn't mean it will ever be added (like the third BL 2 raid boss that was apparently mentioned by name in the code) or wasn't part of something that was scrapped at some point in the development process.

This isn't a case of "bad reporting," actually. It's precisely what Chadderz - the hacker who claimed to discover the information - said in a chat session. It's right here, the very first line of text:

http://mkboards.com/forums/...

Whether it's misinformation from the hacker is a different story. What was reported, however, came from the horse's mouth, not the site who reported the information.

admiralvic3961d ago

@ Nintendo_Fan_4life

No, thats still bad reporting since all your "proof" is a line of text someone posted in relation to some images and Nintendo News doesn't even entertain the idea that these images might be something else. The article just keeps calling them DLC cup icons (5 times to be exact) like it's the only possible answer, when the article really should be more neutral.

Like the title should be "Data Miner Finds Unused Cup Icons" and the article should be about how the icons could mean, with a note that the hacker called them "DLC icons." With that being said, I find it amusing that you linked me to that thread, partly because it shows (as it's linked in my comment) you didn't read my original post, so kudos! But I'm also glad you did that, since even the the site administration of MKboards didn't care that Chadderz called them "DLC icons" and changed the title to "Unused Grand Prix images found through data mining" ( http://mkboards.com/forums/... ), nor did the Reddit post you're sourcing jump to that same automatic conclusion despite Chadderz stating it as such "Mario Kart 8 - Unused Grand Prix cup images. (more DLC?)."

Remember, just because some person called it DLC and it might very well be DLC, doesn't automatically make it such and considering there isn't any compelling evidence that these cups are / were planned as DLC (quite the contrary actually), the writer shouldn't reported them as such.

nintendo_fan_4life3961d ago

@admiralvic

That's a good point, and should be considered when reading the article. It could be DLC, it could be unused icons, it could mean anything really. But yes, the article here was titled according to what the data miner said.

I agree, however, that it could have been more neutral.

I can see this being real only for a few reasons.

1. I remember someone stumbling on a Yoshi game for the Wii U inside some data files on the system it's self. Now look we have Yoshi's Wolly World coming next year.

2. Judging by the fact were getting free DLC Karts on the 27th already shows that Mario Kart 8 has DLC intergrated into the tittle. I also remember Gamexplain saying how it looks like the cup screen had more room for four additional cups that could be added.

I hope this turns out to be true. I would LOVE for 16 additional tracks to be added. I would also love for more characters and for fans of Battle Mode to get their more traditional Battle Mode stages added.

maniacmayhem3962d ago

I would love to get some more cups for Mario Kart. This would be one of the only times I would really approve of DLC.

Games like these needs to have more content over a great length of time. I wish Sonic All Stars did as that game gave me my kart fix while waiting for this.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot728d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr728d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt728d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
