Ripten Review: Total Extreme Wrestling 2008 (8/10)

Ripten writes: "Mainstream professional wrestling has more in common with the cast of Saturday morning cartoons then any television drama. Man's best and worst traits are identified and amplified in the larger than life characters: the snob, the hero, the witty, and the racist. There's no room for a personality of vague definition.
If the entertainment itself demands such extremes, it's little surprise that it has such a polarising effect on viewers – it's something people either enjoy or ridicule.
It's that fact that brings me to a necessary warning: this is not a game for non-fans. If you're not interested in wrestling, just walk on by, because there's nothing for you here. Total Extreme Wrestling 2008 is every bit as narrowly focused as the name suggests."

Diehard GameFAN: 10 Questions With… Adam Ryland

Diehard GameFAN: What is your next game going to be? Is it TEW 2010?

Adam Ryland: Yes, TEW2010 will be the next release, sometime in the first few months of the year. It's going to be based upon TEW08 given that there's no point in reinventing the wheel, and will be jam-packed with new features. My developer's journal that reveals new features on a daily basis will be starting sometime in November.

Diehard GameFAN: A Thumb To The Eye: TEW '08 Redux

The biggest reason, Chuck Platt thinks that he is still playing TEW '08 is the depth and flexibility of the initial scenario. There are dozens of wrestling promotions available from the outset, and more appear as the game continues. Playing a game at the Supreme Wrestling Federation is so different from playing as its number one competitor, Total Championship Wrestling, that it is a testament to the quality of the game's engine that they can co-exist. That is not even the widest gulf you can cross. Try playing as Warrior Engine XXV, a Japanese garbage fed, with its one quality, popular worker and compare that to running Pride Glory Honor Wrestling, a hotbed of talented workers. Each has its own challenges and rewards. He is sure there are players who never even attempt booking the women's wrestling companies, like Babes of Sin City and miss out on a whole new experience. From the darling of most players, Mid Atlantic Wrestling, to the seemingly doomed North of the Border Pro Wrestling, the Cornellverse is such an interesting and engrossing setting for a wrestling game that he seldom misses the real world. Of course, if he does, there are always the mods, which are reason two, handily enough.

GameZone: Total Extreme Wrestling 2008 Review

GameZone writes: "I must admit that I have a fascination with wrestling. I've been a huge fan of wrestling twice now, once in the early 80's and then again in the late 90's and early 2000's. My last infatuation with wrestling drove me to find out more about what really happened in wrestling. I made it a point to visit almost every wrestling Web site to read about the latest scoop and behind the scenes happenings of WWE, WCW, ECW and Japanese wrestling.

I even had a crazy dream at one time that I wanted to be involved in the inner workings of a wrestling company. There were a couple local independent companies (Ohio Valley Wrestling and IWA Mid-South) running shows that I would attend from time to time. I remember at one show thinking to myself that I would get some money up and "invest" in one of these companies. Now if you know anything about wrestling you probably realize just how insane that idea was at the time. You don't just "invest" in a wrestling company and get a chance to run the show. I was naïve and sucked into a form of entertainment that I thought I knew everything about. Yet almost 10 years later the wrestling business is still going, with fans still having the same dream I did years ago."
