I don't know where you got that smash bros screen shot, but i play it all the time, and it is still a very well made game

Most games that don't age well are usually going for realistic graphics. Other games have their art style to fall back on.

I put a lot of stock into how the games control now, too. If I were going strictly off of graphics, pretty much everything from the fifth generation would be a contender. (Shadows of the Empire, in my mind, is a prime example of poor controls.)

I guess I did gravitate a little more toward the "bad graphics" angle than I should have. And I completely agree about the art style thing. I'd actually argue that's why a lot of current/last-gen games opted for a more artistic graphical approach (that and cost efficiency).

Depends on your TV also. Playing all those old games on your HDTV will look considerably worse then they actually did on a CRT tv.

I'm still kicking myself I had an old Samsung GX CRT monitor sitting around that my girlfriend talked me into throwing out since it was just sitting in the closet. If I saved it I could have an awesome nostalgic console setup in the corner of my spare room..

Yeah I still use an old tv as well. I disagree with smash bros though, though it does seem like a tech demo for melee, the gameplay is still fun. And while some aspects of goldeneye have aged poorly, I still find it more fun than most shooters today. The way enemies have a lot of different animations in reaction to getting shot as well as the sound effects that go with it give the gunplay a more satisfying feeling than most shooters today, in which enemies are usually like bullet sponges. I also prefer the open level design and good dose of challenge.

When I tried to play Donkey Kong 64 on my HDTV, it looked AWFUL. Not sure if it's as bad if you play them from the Nintendo eShop or PSN.

Those games aged just fine. Nothing wrong with them at all. Still loads of fun playing games from older generations.

Actually replaying Xenogears right now and having a blast.

Disruptor PS1, a pre Goldeneye console FPS from 1996 (with Command and Conquer type FMV cutscenes) and the first game by a pre Spyro Insomniac Studios directed by Mark Cerny. A good game for its time, and pre Bioshock use of telekinesis type powers. A game sadly almost completely lost to time

I have never even heard of it, so that must be a deep cut. Sounds really interesting and I might dig it out :-)

@Cacabunga A classic, no doubt. But, fondly remembered by many.

Cacabunga11d ago

First one was so good but second one on another level!!!
Still hoping to see a next gen version..

PrimeVinister11d ago

@Cacabunga Yeah, I preferred II for the real-timier combat. I would love to see both remade or remastered.

We need to bring back the golden era of ps1 & ps2 .
We need to see quality games developed with alot of passion to make gamers satisfied .
We need to benefit from new AI technology to bring something new to games something like " nemesis systems " that used in shadow of morder and upgrade it to next level

The economics of games has changed a lot since the PS1 and PS2. As much as I would love a return to those days, it's not not at all likely.
