With the new Doom game reportedly a full-blooded reboot that harks back to the glory days of the first-person shooter, lapsed fan Mark Butler argues that the entire genre could do with a reboot – and re-discover the imagination and variety of its past.
How do composers make the iconic music tracks from games that we love? And just what makes them so memorable?
Have you ever looked at a modern first-person shooter and wondered "How did we get here?" Wealth of Geeks performs a deep dive into the genre, including some of the most influential games, from the very first FPS from the cross-genre experiences that changed the game entirely.
BLG writes, "There are many fantastic and iconic weapons in game history, but some are significantly more memorable than others. When we think of iconic game weapons, these are the top 20 that come to mind."
You forgot one and it's a doozy. The weapon is kindness in undertale. :) defeats countless enemies.
I can't remember the last time I finished a first person shooter, always seem to get bored of the same old concepts. If ever a genre needs reinvigorating its this one.
The world needs a fun cartoony shooter, designed like a cartoon or comic, with depth.
It also needs a serious bright and colorful alien-based one.
These will revitalize the genre.
no it doesn't, everytime someone says this and they add something, they mess it all up for years and years, and freaking years, i.e halo 2, just sh** up and find a game series you like
rory that's why team fortress exists
I prefer the classic stuff. Again WW2.
The genre doesn't need a reboot it needs a break. Far too many FPS games getting made these days and it's just getting stale. FPS games are far more limited in what they can do due to the first person camera angle and being honest, most of them seem to water down the stories in favour of seen it all before set pieces which just don't have as much wow factor as they used to say back in MoH glory days or in the original COD.
