Microsoft didn't get GTA IV's DLC delay memo

Destructoid's Jim Sterling writes: Before the weekend, Take-Two announced that the Xbox 360's exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV DLC would be delayed until next year, but it seems that Microsoft has other ideas. The company, which paid a David Bowie's ransom for the downloadable content, is still pretty sure we'll be seeing more from Liberty City later this year.

More pick up and drop off, smash the store front, beat the clock and transport missions abound! Think I'm going to pass the game's bad enough already.

Tomdc6215d ago

whos gunna buy it after a year lol...

then again I'm still waiting for the shivering isles expansion to come on the UK store...

InMyOpinion6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

Or maybe new map areas, cars, stores etc. I know you want to downplay it as much as you can because it's not coming to a certain console.

Silogon6215d ago

I have it for the xbox 360 or is it now only for Ps3?

thesummerofgeorge6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

Yeah, last year I honestly thought I would be all bent outta shape about not being able to get my hands on the DLC when it came out, but now I'm ready to move on from gta IV, if the PS3 was getting it depending on the price I might buy it if I was bored, or wasn't immersed in another game but that's about it. I think it's safe to say the DLC just like the game itself, could never live up to the ridiculous amount of hype. Not to say it won't be good.

Bleucrunch6215d ago

THe DLC will be another thing that will be heavily overated once it releases.

gall0t6716215d ago

yeah man in gta4 i wanted to set up a damn bank robbery and be the one to take the money and do it whenever i want. not runaway after the cutscene and thats it u cant ever go in a bank again.

NO_PUDding6215d ago

Good job Microsoft, put a talented developer on bad terms with you. The start of a great relationship no?

Maybe they wanted to lay down the conceptual basis of the PS3 exclusive, and that's why MS are crackign the whip, they want to hold it off as long as possible.

Britjadg6215d ago

not gonna get involved with a debate on DLC being overrated, as that is rather largely dependent on whats in it.

as to release dates for DLC, it surely hinges on what contractual agreement MS has with Take2. i hope MS isnt handling this through the media though - they need to be in discussions with devs to find out how and what they can do to speed the process up / find out what issues are, not baiting them through the media.

newneto6215d ago

Too much hype for this game. I have better option from now on.

and second news that confirm that the release date is beggining of 2009 and not semptember as M$

therealwillie6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

of course ms are not going to confirm it yet, i walk into my local shop and all i can see is gta posters with dlc coming this autumn/fall on them.... its a selling point... i'd bet my bottom dollar ms know very well its going to be delayed

rbanke6215d ago

Thats the first mention i've seen of them advertising the DLC. If i didnt pay attention to gaming websites, I would have no idea about it. My local Gamestop, blockbuster, best buy, or any other game outlets have no signage mentioning it. I'm a ps3 owner but my brother in law has a 360, when i told him the 360 is getting exclusive DLC later on, he was suprised as it was the first time he's heard of it. (he doesnt pay attention to 'gaming news').

therealwillie6215d ago

well i would take a picture but that seems like to much effort :)

eagle216215d ago

they had to give their "internet cronies" some hope and bait to fuss with gamers who own superior consoles with superior 08' line-ups.

lol :)

kazuma6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

to this day i still think microsoft did a crappy deal. it would have been a great deal if that exclusive dlc content came out like this week to counter mgs4. now whether it comes out at the end of 2008 or 2009 people have moved on by then.

gears of war 2, resistance 2, fallout 3, littlebigplanet, banjo 3, star wars force unleashed, silent hill 5, aliens colonial marines, bionic commando, ghostbusters, motorstorm 2, fable 2 perhaps, mirror's edge, prince of persia, resident evil 5, tomb raider underworld...just to name a few big ones. people just won't care

Aclay6215d ago (Edited 6215d ago )

If Microsoft released the Downloadable content this month, it would have done nothing to counter Metal Gear Solid 4. MGS4 is so Epic that the only game that could hold weight with MGS4 is Gears 2. Plus, the downloadable content probably wasn't ready to be released yet. A lot of people have already gone back to COD4 and they are bored with GTA4.

By the time that GTA4 downloadble content comes out, Xbox 360 owners will be playing Gears of War 2 like crazy. There might be some people that will take the time to download the GTA4 content and play it but I don't think that everyone that bought GTA4 on the 360 will be downloading the Episodic content.

I'm beginning to think that Microsoft totally wasted that $50 million dollars because GTA4 wasn't as good as people thought that it was going to be because they've already moved on to other games. I haven't played GTA4 in a week and when MGS4 comes in the mail June 12th, I won't be playing GTA4 for another month or more. Microsoft could have secured Bioshock 2 for 2009 with the $50 Million or something.

kazuma6215d ago

well if they had advertised it more, if could have held back a few people on playing mgs4. that way they would have 2 exclusives: ninja gaiden 2 + gta4 episodic content.
i am aware that it would probably never been ready for june, although to me it seems like it would have been the best time to release it. once u start getting into september, all the major franchises will start popping up and no one will give a crap about gta4.

lsujester6215d ago

I don't really care if it were out right now. I have no desire for more of the "drive here, shoot this guy, drive back" routine. I had to make myself finish the campaign because i'd finally gotten around to buying Echochrome.

jadenkorri6215d ago

i know ms got the short end of the stick on this one, first all, GTA 3 was the greatest, VC, and SA were also great, but GTA in general has gotten old and turned into, play for awhile, rampage for a bit, ok back to my other games...after 3 games, they tend to go bland, GTA 4, is GTA 6, and its getting old, i think rockstar, if they want to revive the series, is to take a page from the godfather, and i mean literally...People loved going from place to place and beating people up forcing them to pay, or die..which ever...Story was great and all for GTA 4, but afterwards, theirs nothing to do, and WTF do i do with all my money, oh, buy hookers, weapons, and armor, that's it, whats the point of earning money...VC and SA had places to buy to earn money, like the Strip club and stuff...GTA4 is a big let down and i doubt people will be playing it months from now, or even a year if its delayed...BTW if MS rushes them, well expect GTA 4 DLC to be crap, nothing ever comes out good from a rushed game

Fallen_Angel6215d ago

The only people that are really seem to be tired of GTA is the ps3 fanboys. Maybe its cause their online is crap, maybe its cause of how poorly it rans on the ps3 or maybe they are just trying to down play DLC cause its a 360 exclusive (kind of like they try to do with all 360 exclusives). I hate to do this (use vgchartz that is) but if you go by vgchartz gta4 all ready sold over 5 million copies and out sold gow putting it just behind CoD4 and Halo. By the end of the year it will probably pass up CoD4.

Ps3 players rush through the single player mode and with their crappy online and no home (aka no achievements) they dont have anything more to do. Getting a 100% of the game requires another 20-30 hours of play after you beat the game. Getting 1000/1000 is probably at least 150 hours. Every time I log on to XBL and look at my friends list every single person is still playing gta I havent seen a single person play any other game from the time its been released.

kazuma6215d ago

if u don't seem to get the overall idea of my comment, u might as well answer it elsewhere.

honestly dude i don't give a crap whether you or a thousand people complete gta4 to 100% or whatever, i'm pretty sure u and ur friends will be waiting anxiously and will stop playing whatever they're playing fall 2008 or 2009 just to play some dlc...yeah right

Dark General6215d ago

I have the Ps3 version of GTA4 and i'll be honest i brought it from all the hype it was producing (and my friends talking about it all the got damn time) and it exceeded my expectations. But it didn't meet the hype of the game. It didn't run crappy on the Ps3 either contrary to what you said i did not rush the story. I finished the single player after logging in 52 hours in the game. It probably would have been more hours but i got bored going towards the end (basically when you do the mob jobs for the peg) and i didn't like the slow pacing that it had. I'm pretty sure that playing through GTA4 was my last time playing a GTA game.

Cd3112906215d ago

Actually no i think you'll find the ps3 online works just like the xbox 360 online except in our version you don't lag every 5 seconds:)
And it runs smoother on the ps3 btw.

Sounds like someone is just annoyed that their line up this year isn't what it was last year.

gall0t6716215d ago

totally right. mgs4 could only be countered by gears2. and if both of them came out this week or even month i would never sleep.
completely right, they shoulda used the 50mil to pin down bio2. and no one cares about dlc because it isnt as good as everyone thought.

what they shoulda done was have the dlc come out in like july or august cuz theres nothing really coming out then. and everything is hitting starting like september.

jadenkorri6215d ago

well fallen, is that your only defense, when a game is bad and is downplayed you blame sony fanboys, the game runs great on my ps3, ive had no problems with multilayer. I could be ignorant and be saying that if my ps3 has no problems, no one else's does, but i would be totally wrong, and same goes with the 360.. and achievements/trophies, i could care less, having a score showing a number based on how much you play games and shoving it in other peoples faces, just shows how much of a loser you really are by proving you have the higher score...btw, just because you have the high score, does not make you the best, of course when your living in your mom's basement, having that kind of achievement can be of some comfort.... if you want to believe that everything on the 360 is perfect, while ps3 sucks all the time go right ahead, the 13 millions of us and counting will enjoy our games, while the 19 millions 360 users and declining enjoy your games...

XBLA Classic 'A World of Keflings' Is Coming to Steam, and There's a Demo

"Back in the innocent days of 2010, A World of Keflings was a fairly popular successor to A Kingdom for Keflings. I even wrote about it a few times in 2012! But the world of humans moved on, and NinjaBee's city-building/adventure game was last seen on the ill-fated Wii U in 2014. Fast-forward to the dark year of 2025, and not only is A World of Keflings coming to Steam, but there's already a playable demo! Perhaps the cheerful, no pressure gameplay that the Keflings bring is just what we need nowadays," says Co-Optimus.

This is very much a “dummy who volunteers themselves to the middle” comment.

The real enemy is a common phrase, people use it all the time.

Calm down.

jambola3d ago

i'm very calm
you seem very upset however

Notellin3d ago

You don't seem calm at all. Don't take this so seriously, you seem desperate responding to others defending your opinion that lacks any value or critical thought.

ABizzel12d ago (Edited 2d ago )

DEI was never the problem and it was an ignorant take to begin with.

DEI is why games like Kena Bridge of Spirits, South of Midnight, and Ghost of Tsushima exist.

DEI is why we have a huge resurgence in Japanese, Chineses, and Korean developers producing games like Stellar Blade, Black Myth, and why Nintendo & Sony exist.

DEI is why more and more games have HUGE accessibility options with both Sony and MS fully behind this.

DEI was never a bad thing, the entire purpose of DEI is representation of all people, genders, disabilities, etc…

The problem was people used DEI as a default derogatory term to describe what they believed was forced representation, which allowed colorist, racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic, and xenophobic fools to run away with the negative DEI narrative.

jambola2d ago

you don't get to decide other people's motivations
sorry to break it to you

ABizzel11d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

To each their own, however, nothing you said invalidates why some people take offense to DEI incorrectly.

Executives seem to often have an obsession with perpetual revenue growth. There is always a finite amount of consumers for a product regardless of growth. Additionally, over investment is another serious issue in gaming.

Killer2020UK3d ago

The fact that they also rarely have any real expertise in game development compounds things. They'll look at what's been successful elsewhere, lack the knowledge to properly understand why they have been successful and then force a team to 'reproduce' their badly interpreted idea of that success.

We see it so often with sequels to games that were successful too. The team are left well alone, they have a break through hit and all of sudden the money men descend on the IP and completely railroad the dev team's ideas. Usually winds up being 'make the same game but MORE'

LoveSpuds3d ago

This is true throughout all of the corporate and public sector organisations to be honest. CEO's generally move amongst the corporate world without any need to have experience of a particular industry, they simply need to rely on their senior leadership credentials. A CEO of a retail giant will just as easily transition to a CEO role in the energy sector for example.

Not defending CEOs here to be clear, I think it's a huge part of the reason the western world is so fucked up. CEOs don't need to care about the sector they work in, in fact it's better if they don't care if they want to screw everyone to make profits.

GhostScholar3d ago

Companies don’t hire executives to break even. If the goal is breaking even then why start the company in the first place.

Soy3d ago

That's understood; it's getting record profits and expecting to always beat those record profits, and seeing anything less as a total failure. Then they lay people off and raise prices to reach those record profit levels again, just to sate shareholders. It's setting expectations way too high just to spike share prices, then inevitably falling short. It's feeling entitled to being more successful than everyone else. It's the CEOs doing all this to boost their own bonuses.

ABizzel12d ago

Growth benefits the company’s profits and therefore the company’s stock if publicly traded, which pleases the shareholders making them more and more rich, which is why Growth is always at the forefront of the vast majority of any publicly traded company.

More growth = More Money and the people at the top want all the money they can get. I can’t really blame them anyone would love to see their profits go from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, to multi-millions it’s almost like a gambling addiction.

But it also goes to show someone how morals can go out the window for a lot of these people, and how amazing some CEOs are when they catch this early and provide a balance solution that takes complete care of their employees across the board while keeping the business sustainable IE: Insomniac Games ALWAYS on the best places to work list. The rest of the industry could learn.

jambola5d ago

honestly, the "real" enemy of gaming, is ourselves
if nobody bought horse armor, shitty dlc would have died almost overnight
if we stood firm and nobody bought games from companies that were bad with layoffs, it would be solved
we're the idiots supporting awful business practices, we are the ones enouraging it

TiredGamer3d ago

I think the reality that we don't want to convince ourselves of is that without the rise of "horse armor" and DLC, game budgets would have essentially stagnated (smaller teams/smaller games), or game prices would have risen much more dramatically than they have. There was an incessant drive for bigger worlds, infinite detail, and hundreds of hours of "gameplay" over the last two decades, that while perhaps a natural evolution of things, needed a suitable funding stream to accomplish.

HyperMoused3d ago

What...CEOs make tens of millions and that doesnt include SLT etc etc...we now have multiple editions of games, in game currency, MT's, battle passes.....and what do we get..worse game than what was coming out 20 years ago....dont drink the cool aid, its this nickel and dime crap that is absolutely leading us to gaming destruction.

senorfartcushion3d ago

This is the worst possible answer to this conundrum. Blaming the masses is blaming the only people who are constantly “told” to buy.

Consumers are the only ones not to blame here. People make their own choices all the time. Disney movies are bombing and DEInis being blamed. Has that been enough to put Disney out of business? No and it never will.

Christopher3d ago

Disagree. Businesses are able to do what they do because people are bad consumers and don't think critically about purchases. Disney got away with doing shit stuff for years and it's just the last year where people got tired of it. It's not like it didn't work for 5 years or so for Disney to do the things they've done. They'll just move onto another way to get people to see movies and it will be just as bad but more profitable until people wake up and realize it.

TiredGamer3d ago

Consumerism drives business behavior. It's not so much "blaming" as it is observing behavior. The point I'm making is that the direction that games have gone are driven by the spending. Consumers are spending on DLC and they are driving the expectation of more glitz and padded out (lengthier) games. If they continue to pay, they will continue to drive that direction until a threshold is reached that forces a change in behavior.

senorfartcushion3d ago

Corporate advertising is the most powerful force on the planet.

This is N4G for god sake, every day there are arguments between people who are Team Xbox and Team PlayStation because they’ve been convinced that having an identity built on paying money to Sony and Microsoft matters more than having one as individual gamers who can play whatever they want.

And THEN we get to the corporate advertising part: to play whatever you want is to sink MORE into the advertising pits, making it so that you can more than one specific product.

jambola3d ago

ah you're right
they were told to buy it, it's clearly impossible to avoid that
if enough people stopped supporting, it would stop
disney not stopping would only be because enough people didn't stop

victorMaje3d ago

Agreed. I’ve been saying for years, announce you won’t be buying the upcoming game because of the practices of the previous game, then you only have to stick to your guns once, see how quickly things change for the better.

We have to unite in what we shouldn’t purchase.

jambola3d ago

just imagine a world, fifa came out worse, nobody buys the next one until they see proof it's better and stick to it
or games being forced online for single player and nobody buys it
things would change so fast

Greed and greedy people have and always will be the main issue for everything wrong in the world. Everything is a product to be exploited for monetary gain. Even when there are things that could help progress us along for the sake of making our lives easier that thing must be exploited for monetary gains. Anything that tells you otherwise is propaganda to make you complicit.

coolfool3d ago

I've never thought "DEI" (although the way most people use it doesn't match it's real definition) is the problem with games. Good games have continued to be good when they have a diverse cast, and likewise, bad games have continued to be bad. There isn't a credible example I've seen where a diverse cast has been the direct cause of a game being bad.
