Naughty Dog Dev: PS4 Without a Hard Disk Would Suck for Both Players and Devs; Gives More Details

A few days ago Mark Cerny and Andrew House explained that at one point Sony explored the possibility of releasing the PS4 without a hard disk, and today Naughty Dog Programmer Drew Thaler, who worked on the PS4 while it was in development (on the PlayGo system) gave more details about it the option and more.

it's not just Ps4
any console now without Hard Disk would suck

MasterCornholio4007d ago

You said it best.

Well said.

:)

Retroman4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

Digital download only console would suck as well .

Ezz20134007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

agreed, i can't live with just one of them
both are needed for me

MightyNoX4007d ago

Replaced the HDD on the first day with a solid state drive. Never looked back. Thank you, based Cerny.

Ares84HU4007d ago

What sucks is no one can create a game without dumping 20+ GB on that 500GB HDD. It fills up so fast. I already had to delete games twice just so I can play new ones. Forget about the times where you just pop in a disk and play whenever and whatever. Now, you constantly have to make room. That is what sucks not a console without an HDD.

PS4 should have came with a 2TB HDD standard. 500GB HDD when you have 20-50GB game installs is a joke.

DualWielding4007d ago

what it needs is external HD support, the only thing Nintendo got right this generation. And Microsoft already implemented it... Sony needs to catch up in this area

PsylentKiller4007d ago

If Sony sold the trays for the HDD separately, the ability to hot swap (somewhat) would be just as good. It would, almost be like plugging in a flash drive. Only you have to remove the the cover first, which takes about two seconds. Maybe they could modify the cover somehow to make it easier.

wsoutlaw874007d ago

@psylent i havent done it since my first ps3 but doesnt the ps reformat the hd every time it is changed for security an piracy reasons.

Lazyeye794007d ago

It would have been nice if it came stock with a bigger HDD, but thankfully Sony gives you the option of upgrading the PS4's internal HDD. So you can put a 2TB in there if you like.

Ares84HU4007d ago

Is there a 2TB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA hard drive? I could't find one.

hiawa234007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

I got a 1TB sshd in my PS4, and a 2TB external drive on my One, so both consoles allow for larger drives. Internal or external makes no difference to me.

arkard4007d ago

I think 1.5 gb is the biggest 2.5 they have right now.

ScottyHoss4007d ago

There's a Samsung external drive with a 2TB 2.5 drive inside it.

@ares84hu
"PS4 should have came with a 2TB HDD standard. 500GB HDD when you have 20-50GB game installs is a joke.".....then you and everybody else would be complaining when they revealed the price and it was north of 525 dollars...at least this way the console is less expensive and you can easily buy a hdd on your own of your own choosing, be it hybrid or ssd. I'd rather have the lower price on the console and the option to upgrade on my own, just the way Sony did it.

andibandit4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

Wow sounds news worthy to me

can't wait for tomorrows:

This is moot since it has a hdd

Naughty Dog Dev And Former PS4 Architect On Switch: Nintendo Hitting All Of Their Strengths

The Nintendo Switch's unveiling might not have gone down all that well with the enthusiast gamer, but all indications are that just about everyone is pretty happy with the thing. 'Just about everyone' also includes Naughty Dog- or at least, one of the most preeminent developers at Naughty Dog.

The price shouldn't effect someones opinion on the console. The product looks great.

3085d ago Replies(3)
AcidDvl3085d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

It shouldn't? So if someone charged for example 800$ for a console that is weaker than, let's say for the sake of argument, the 3DS, you honestly think the price shouldn't affect someones opinion on said console?

Edit: Even if the console is good, it doesn't justify it being overpriced.
You judge based on what it achieves and how much you pay for it. If you pay 100% more that what it's worth, are saying that you don't judge the way the company is treating you?

@Old McGroin -> You're arguing the straw man...

Neonridr3085d ago

but nobody is charging $800 for something that is weaker than the 3DS. So let's come back to reality here.

I get what you are trying to say, but let's not go overboard here.

cfc833085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

No it shouldn't. If something is hugely over-priced, it simply won't sell. The switch is a home console, a handheld and table top co-op splitscreen all in one. I think plenty of nintendo fans will be alright with the " i got it first" price. The thing is almost sold out. Complaints invalid at this moment in time.

Utalkin2me3085d ago

@Neonridr

Doesn't detract from his reply to the original comment.

Old McGroin3084d ago

@ AcidDvl

You've gone way overboard with your exaggerated example but yeah, if a console is good then it's good regardless of price. You really think the price you pay actually affects the products quality? That's mad. You're basically saying that people who buy Uncharted 4 now are buying a better game than the people who bought it day one, just because it's cheaper now. Quality is not affected by price.

Nintendo-or-Nothing3084d ago

Remember, The atari was over $800 in todays dollars. Americans have gotten use to cheap goods from china but $300 is nothing for a new console.

''Nintendo Hitting All Of Their Strengths''

yeah, alienating 3rd parties and consumers

DeadlyOreo3085d ago

Wii didn't have a whole lot of 3rd party support but did very well. Nintendo have so much good 1st party, plus I'd just use my PS4 for third party titles.

_-EDMIX-_3084d ago

That is a classic Nintendo strength! Lol

Rippcity3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Regardless of price, a lot of people think that the product itself doesn't look great at all. I for one never once asked for a mobile/console hybrid. And there are plenty of other people like me out there who see zero use cases for the mobile aspect of the Switch. I realize mobile is prevalent in other countries but if Ninty wanted a piece of the mobile pie they should start pumping out AAA titles to iOS and Android. There's absolutely no reason why the main Pokemon games can't be played on mobile. Hell, they would probably BENEFIT from touch controls. And to the people who refuse to pay full price for a game on mobile, Square has no issues getting people to buy the FF games at 15-20 bucks a pop on smart devices. All I'm saying is, their IPs have so much potential and they should be focusing on them to sell their hardware, not their hardware to sell their IPs (a mindset they inherited thanks to the Wii's success which they don't seem to want to let go of).

Edit: grammar

UltraNova3084d ago

Hmm interesting comment...

I think Nintendo knows that their IPs are overused and 'samey' (splatoon is the single exception in a decade) so their focus on making innovative hardware might be a way to distract us (at least thats what they think) from that underlying worry that people might be getting tired of endless mario, pokemon and zelda iterations.

In fact, I think they are so hell bend on distracting us that they literarly forgot how to listen to our expectations and needs.

Rant end.

Now I dont think the Switch is my cup of tea. Portability means absolutly nothing to me as I would never use it (apart from some WC action) especially knowing that quality will take a hit. I like my games crisp and clear on high settings and on huge a** screens; knowing that the console's potential was held back to accomodate this portable 'innovation' pushes me away.

What Nintendo should have done was to add another tegra chip on the dock, doubling the Switch's power. Then 3rd party support would be a no brainner and people like me would have no excuse not to buy one.

il-JumperMT3084d ago

+1. I live in a country that is only 412 KM Squared. I have no need for portable device.

Rippcity3084d ago

@UltraNova I agree with most of what you said but I don't agree that Nintendo IPs are stale. Metroid has never been completely realized in my opinion and if they were smart they would use it to create a shooter to compete with the likes of the big shooters on xbox or ps. I think what they are doing with BotW is a fantastic direction and I really think that game has so much potential. Star fox could have been so much better. Luigis mansion is another ip left to die on the ds. F zero and kart for racing. They have so much potential but their hardware constantly holds them back.

ABizzel13085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

I get what you're saying as well, and you should be able to objectify that when looking at the hardware as a reviewer. But it is a topic that should be discussed, and it's also one of the primary decisions a consumer must make when considering buying the product.

So from a journalistic standpoint it shouldn't hold much weight, but should be mentioned.

From a consumer standpoint this thing cost too d@mn much to get the "console" experience Nintendo is claiming, especially when compared to the competition.

_-EDMIX-_3084d ago

trust me liking it is not going to make it successful , buying it is

Zarock3084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

It should If the hardware Is not on par with todays hardware standards.

rainslacker3084d ago

I have nothing against the console, or even the base price. Wouldn't mind a pack in game, but whatever.

It's the auxiliary purchases that would make it an ideal system for me that kind of make it less than compelling at launch, particularly with only one game I'd really be interested enough to buy the system for.

People are saying that Nintendo screwed it all up, and I don't really feel that's true. I just think they also would feel compelled to make those extra purchases, which kind of prices them out of the market for the system.

Oh well. Nintendo will deal with it if it causes problems with sales. They did the same thing with the 3DS.

Console itself is kind of cool, and like the way it can be a home console and a handheld. Wouldn't use it for a primary console for multi-plats, unless there was one I really wanted to play on the go....which is almost never...but knowing how Nintendo gets support for it's handhelds, it'll probably be worth getting at some point.

il-JumperMT3084d ago

If Switch was 50$ Cheaper with no extra bullcrap to buy (Pro Controller) I would instantly pre order it, but now I instead pre ordered Horizon Zero Dawn CE

WOLFofWALLSTREET3084d ago

True if the company doesn't value it, then the consumers won't. This machine will appeal to all the 3ds people as well as Wii U. I think it's a good price.

Yes a positive article from someone who actually knows what there talking about. From in my
Opinion one of the best development teams in the world of gaming. I love Sony and Nintendo
Both make amazing games.

mcstorm3085d ago

Tbh all 3 make amazing games just depends on what type of games you like. For me the switch look a very promising console. I am getting one on day one but I do think for it to be a hit Nintendo need to look at explaining some things a little better but I really hope that the switch gets all of Nintendo's focus in terms of games. Give the hard core fans game like metrod, Zelda ect. Keep the fun games like Pickmin DK, Mario ect and bring the two best selling IPS in Mario kart and Pokémon (full games) and I think Nintendo could really do well with the console. The biggest issue I see with the switch will be the 3rd party games like bf, cod, FIFA ect I just don't see people moving from the ps4 or Xbox one to the switch for games like this because of the lack of power so to speak. Only time will tell though but for me I'm excited for the switch and can't wait to get it on 3rd of match

corroios3085d ago

It’s a high-def 3DS, the perfect definition

GameBoyColor3085d ago

Which is great. If it gets the same support and stuff like animal crossing it'll be one of the best purchases i've made.

StormLegend3085d ago

It's none of that until it starts to the 3DS type of games.

navi873084d ago

"It’s a high-def 3DS, the perfect definition"
...with console titles on it...boom!

moegooner883085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

The reason the Wii sold so well to the casuals was because of the motion control wow factor. The Switch is a glorified handheld. Only time will tel how well it will sell, but currently it is a much much harder sell than the Wii

Devs React To Kojima & Guerrilla Partnership: A ‘Hot Matchup’, Industry Tech Need To Be Shared More

Yesterday it was revealed that Hideo Kojima's upcoming action open world (and possibly horror) game Death Stranding will be running on Decima, an engine which has been largely developed by Guerrilla Games.

BizarroUltraman3129d ago

Decima..

@imo,

You know something we don't?

Sevir3129d ago

Decima is beast! It's insane that Sony is letting a 3rd party use it's first party tools.

And it makes sense for Kojima in this regard. MGS5 took much longer because he was simultaneously creating FOX engine which Konami took from him after the fall out. Given the scope of this project and the time he wants to launch, developing a brand new engine would cost more money and prolong the development of the game.

Sony probably wanted to get him up and running as smoothly as possible and eliminate the cost over head of footing the R&D cost of a new engine when they are already publishing the game.

GG and Kojima are a match made in heaven...

Can't wait for Horizon and I will keep my eyes on Death Stranding

Muzikguy3129d ago

Leave it to the mind of Kojima for this. I just love that he's so passionate about his work. I too believe that the industry would benefit a lot by sharing tech. Could benefit even more if they were as passionate about the things they're involved with like Kojima is. These days it seems most are more worried about money and DLC than creating a masterpiece or following their dream

PS4 ICE Team Programmer Cort Stratton Leaves Naughty Dog

Graphics programmer leaving team after 11 years.

LordMaim3371d ago

You don't have to. Ten years at Naughty Dog is enough to ensure that he's going to be headhunted by many other developers who'll throw money at him, hoping to bring some of that magic to their studio.

donthate3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

Yup....

but it seems there is a steady outflow of talented and veteran staff at Naughty Dog. I wonder why?

Veterans tend to stick around for a long long time, because they were part of shaping the culture when they were there in the early days.

Goldby3370d ago

@Donthate

it could be anything of Contracts being up, to geographical issues, financial issues. some may be looking to open their own dev studio. and countless others. personally if we had more people from ND in other studios it'll just increase the overall quality we get.

as always, i wish him the best and hope to see good things from his new venture in life.

Pogmathoin3370d ago

Goldby, I would guess its people just wanting a new challenge.... Look at some of the biggest studios, been lots of moving around....

UltraNova3370d ago

Some people naturally need to move on at some point, I know I do, so wherever he goes they are lucky to have him but since new blood will be coming in to replace him at ND we might see an evolutionary change within ND due to new, fresh ideas, who knows.

Good luck to the guy.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3370d ago
Aloy-Boyfriend3371d ago

Sad to see veterans go, but it is to be expected that one day they will leave eventually. I know ND will fill his position with another skilled programmer to keep the ICE team as strong as ever.

Good luck on your future endeavors Cort and Thank You!

gameseveryday3371d ago

Yep, that opens the door for an equally capable person but 11 years is a lot. And in that time he has bought amazing things to the PS4 Graphics API.

Silly Mammo3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

OMG!! What's going on at Naughty Dog?!?!?

/s

Wallstreet373371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

We really going to ask this again? Whats going on at Naughty Dog is what happens in almost every single dev team in existence. Do you know how many teams shut down, change, or ppl move on to different projects? Its common for teams to change in this industry and for ppl to move on to different projects.

Those ppl that move on have left their mark and open up a position for someone who is also talented but maybe with different tool sets that can breathe new life into a project whilst still maintaining the integrity of the team and using established tools and ideas. There will still be major players from the old team helping along and teaching them what they learned.

yomfweeee3371d ago

You must have missed his /s ....

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

lolz, I don't disagree with you, I agree fully with what you are saying.

But....he did state the /s so he is merely joking.

You are correct though, many staff leave publishers often, many times its merely not reported. It would be as strange as a studio like Universal telling us every time someone is fired or laid off etc.

Its not being reported because it doesn't happen, its merely just not being reported.

Wallstreet373371d ago

yomfweeee....

Hell yeah lol I guess im conditioned to hear this same statement from before that i automatically reacted and didnt see the sarcasm.

DEAD-DEVIL-DISCO3371d ago

LP-Eleven3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

Glad you added the "/s". Some would run with that, otherwise (like the individual below me claiming it's "really a goodbye for Uncharted"). Never mind that the guy left the TEAM, not just a mere project. :P

Wallstreet373371d ago

Yeah like i did because ive heard that nonsense so much and ppl were dead serious.

Wallstreet373371d ago

silly Mammo...

Did you add that /s afterwards? lol i didnt see it. Ok now the comment makes sense because ppl say stuff like that all the time.

Toiletsteak3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

They are doomed! Doomed! DOOMED I TELL YA!

WeAreLegion3371d ago

Good Lord. Do we really have to add /s for everyone around here to get sarcasm? Come on.

Exoil3371d ago

Haven't you been here long enough to know that /s is the only thing that seperates the jokers from the fanboys/trolls?

WeAreLegion3371d ago

Lol. Yes. But it's just weird. Ya know?

Skate-AK3371d ago

Sadly you have to do it unless you want to be bubbled down into oblivion.

Bathyj3371d ago

If sarcasm occurs on the internet and theres no /S, does it exist?

Sadly no, you have no vocal tone when typing so is not always clear if your sarcastic or not. Typing /s is just easier if you dont want to be misunderstood.

Oh we should have a sarcasm emoji, that'd be REALLY useful. ;P

The series has been running for some time. Yes, yes, I'm sure you'd like to know how long.

I'm afraid it's been...nine years.

KingKevo3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

The ICE team has nothing to do with the Uncharted series directly though. The ICE team, that works on creating core graphics technologies for all Sony studios (and other third party studios) working on Sony platforms, is a completely seperate team from the other teams at ND that develop games. They share the same studio, but an ICE member has a different job than a programmer working on Uncharted.
