Gamer 2.0 Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood Preview

Danreb Victorio reports:

''Sonic has been a long-time big draw for Sega, but his recent non-2D games have been anything but extraordinary. Sega has simply just haven't been doing the Sonic games right. So what is there to do? In a somewhat desperate fashion, Sega has gotten Mass Effect developer BioWare to see what they can do with the blue hedgehog. To say we're not getting a traditional Sonic game is an understatement, but with a franchise that looks like it's on its way down the toilet, what can Sega lose?

Curiously, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is being developed for the Nintendo DS. Some say this is unnecessary because none of the handheld Sonic games suck-except maybe Sonic Battle. But either way, Sonic Chronicles is an RPG that looks to play as interesting as the game's story. Yes, you read that right; the story matters this time! The opening cutscene had Sonic returning to see his hometown besieged by hostile robot aliens.

From what's been seen so far, it looks as if the game will feature more RPG elements than previous BioWare-developed titles. The game controls like a poor man's Phantom Hourglass as you use the stylus to roam the overworld infested by enemies. If you touch an enemy, you end up switching to the battle screen with the camera focused from behind Sonic's party (which is a maximum of four). So while battles aren't random, Sonic's speed unfortunately allows for difficult handling and he ends up crashing into a lot of enemies anyway, making avoiding combat a pretty difficult ordeal. The combat system seems a bit slow as well, compared with the more fast-paced traveling. It's semi-turn based because for some reason Sonic can attack three times in one turn, but that's probably BioWare's interpretation of him being a speedster. If that's the case, then kudos to BioWare. In Chrono Trigger fashion, there are also some more powerful attacks that can be done with two or more party members, so that's pretty cool too.''

Why Bioware's Sonic RPG Sequel Never Got Made

Despite the fame and popularity of both the studio and the IP in question, not everyone knows that Bioware developed a Sonic RPG prior to them being acquired by EA, Sonic Chronicles for the Nintendo DS, and it was recently detailed in a DidYouKnowGaming video that both Bioware and SEGA were down for a sequel, but it was ultimately canceled for a surprising reason: SEGA was sued for copyright infringement

to be fair tho, the rpg for the DS was a mess.
touchscreen-only was not a good way to make a game like this.

I wish Sega got together with Square and made a Sonic RPG for the Genesis I would have played that.

Square was too in bed with Nintendo at the time.

I Know It Sucked, But It's Time For Another Sonic Chronicles Game

Just because the first one sucked, doesn't mean Sega should abandon the idea of a Sonic RPG.
