Avoiderdragon: Those who had been PC gamers back in the mid to late 90′s would remember the good old days when first-person shooters were simpler and more frenetic than the more modern military-style duck-and-cover style of shooters. The last remnants of this once great empire were seen in the early to mid-2000′s with Quake Live and Doom 3, just as when the superpowers of the pioneers at id Software started to wane and Half-Life 2 by Valve moved the genre forward. It seems that nostalgia is starting to set in and some developers are now trying to recreate that old-school experience, although with mixed results.

(WGB) Dark Raid Review – Should Have Stayed In The Dark

Baden of WGB writes: "Dark Raid is a game in which you’re invited to “load chekpoint” upon death, and enter a “quick mach” under the multiplayer menu. Regardless of your budget, developers, an inability to check spelling is just plain annoying and hardly inspires confidence in your product. These are hardly the only spelling errors within the game, though, and represent just a small portion of Dark Raid’s far larger problems."

Dark Raid Review | Hardcore Gamer

Like most genres of games, first-person shooters have evolved and changed quite a bit over the course of their existence. From the secret filled arenas of the genres progenitors to the linear corridor crawls with over-the-top set pieces of today and everywhere in between, games classified as first-person shooters have varied quite a bit over the years. Dark Raid is an indie FPS from developer Vector Games that aims to return to the design and gameplay of more classic shooters and get away from the tropes of the modern FPS landscape. Though in theory Dark Raid does successfully evoke many of the elements one would associate with older shooters, the results are not exactly what you might be hoping for.
