On why I will never review a free-to-play title again

Backlog Adventure's Will Harrison: The game is apparent with titles such as Candy Crush Saga and Rovio's newest release, Angry Birds Epic: Maximize profit, minimize content. Even with a unique premise for a free-to-play title, Epic continues the downward trend of mobile development ignoring quality and inviting the tropes of the era of 'freemium' gaming. I cannot stand idly by and contribute to the rise of such chicanery.

Nice article, completely agree with it. It's really sad that people are spending money on F2P games or LoL skins and at the same time pirate full priced titles.

Grilla3592d ago

A recent study showed that a very small percentage of mobile gamers actually spend $ on f2p games, if I remember correctly it was less then 1%.

Prime1573592d ago

Might it be the addicted spenders? The ones that rack up a huge tab and go, "did I just spend a few hundred?!"

Baka-akaB3592d ago

Wait you are really picking mobile games that are mediocre in every form , paid or free or f2p as a factor ?

Gamer6663592d ago

There is very little difference between F2P on mobile vs. the consoles...

F2P =

1) Too much advertising in your game
2) Pay or grind for 10's or 100's of hours
3) Pay walls that you are forced into after you start the game to progress

Sure there are a few F2P that don't fit those categories... But, a good 90% do.

Prime1573592d ago

I agree, a lot fit there. But when people start over looking the good ones based on the bad ones'reputation then there is an issue..

Gamer6663592d ago

@Prime157.

It is a business model... Just like choosing leasing vs. renting vs. buying outright there are people that like the model and people that don't...

No matter how great a car is I will never lease it... I will buy it instead.

In gaming it is the same thing... I don't care how great the game is... If it is F2P it no longer is a download for me.

Are_The_MaDNess3592d ago

mobile FTP games...... really now.
i dare you to make a review of Dota 2 and tell me its not great.

EyePawd3592d ago

Not at all. I love DoTA. Regular player. I also would never consider it in the same league as Candy Crush, Angry Birds, et al. DotA is free to play, it isn't "free-to-play."

Now, if skins were sold that offered stat bonuses, or you only had so many times you could play per hour then had to wait for them to recharge or pay money to refill, etc., then we'd have a problem.

slivery3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

I think you mean Pay-to-Win. That is what you're describing, when you just say free-to-play, you cluster in every other game that is free-to-play that actually aren't bad.

Now mind you there aren't a ton of good free-to-play games but there are enough of them.

It creates a common misconception that all free-to-play games are bad and sadly many people on N4G have this notion without any experience to back it up. They just repeat what everyone else says without ever giving some decent games a chance.

Are_The_MaDNess3592d ago

what isnt free to play about Dota 2? im asking you....
there is nothing you can buy that will change the outcome of the games you play. the only things you can pay for is clothing and gear to the heroes and some effects. other then that its just a XP booster that only will increase your loot drop rate.

Blues Cowboy3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

F2P is a great concept that can benefit everyone -- the devs and gamers alike.

*IF* and only if it's executed properly.

At best it's effectively pay what you want -- you can get a load of content for free and pay out for things because you feel the devs deserve some money. Planetside 2 got this right, as I played for 25 hours without paying a penny (all classes, vehicles, weapons etc all available to everyone and balanced), but bought £20 worth of funbucks for a cool hat because SOE earned it. Likewise, games like LOL and DOTA 2 let you pay for content that you want at your own pace, not shell out £50 up-front. See also Zen Pinball etc - we pay for what we want, no more, no less.

BUT the business model has been corrupted by a huge number of awful and cynical games and publishers, especially in the mobile space.

It's just a matter of using common sense and picking the wheat from the chaff. Swearing off 'all' F2P games is idiotic -- just swear off the ****.

EDIT: BUT (having slightly misunderstood the article on first reading) fair play to the author for not wanting to *review* F2P games from now on. They arguably need completely different criteria as value for time is just as important as value for money.

EyePawd3592d ago

That's how I viewed what money I did give in Marvel Puzzle Quest: I almost considered it to be a tip jar, of sorts.

diesoft3592d ago

Thank you. couldn't agree more. Free-to-play's sheer volume of games that get churned out is very disheartening alone.

CoyoteHunter3592d ago

Good call. Totally agree with you.

I never played Angry Birds, never seen it live, and i'm proud. I won't eat the cereal. Birds with eyebrows i can do without.

IamTylerDurden1365d ago (Edited 365d ago )

Not into mobile. Idgaf. Flex...ok. Angry Birds looks dumb af. Not for me. Not into the acquisition or AB craze. Sorry if it offends you. If Sega wanted in on mobile i can think of 800m better spent.

IamTylerDurden1365d ago

Angry Bird sympathizers. I won't even eat the AB gummies. I stay flexing.

Also, my first post wasn't meant as a flex, i was goofing about. AB does look dumb but idc. Man, Angry Army of bird lovin folk. I apologize. Eyebrows on birds are ok.

XiNatsuDragnel366d ago

Probably getting more devs for arcade, Mobile and console platforms.

Profchaos365d ago

Sega has wanted to make it big in the mobile space for the past decade anyone remember that nightmare called sonic 4

Sgt_Slaughter365d ago

One of the unfortunate parts of my Steam library after I bought one of the Sonic Humble Bundles years ago

Profchaos365d ago

You're not alone I suffered to that character model and animation still haunts me

SEGA to Acquire Angry Birds Maker Rovio Entertainment for $775M

SEGA has just acquired Angry Birds studio Rovio Entertainment for $775 million, and looks to use the studio's expertise in mobile gaming.

XiNatsuDragnel367d ago

Nice Sega mobile about to make Sonic mobile

solideagle367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

wow 775 million I thought Rovio was going serious downhill. As I saw multiple youtube videos on it. Rovio was supposed to be a juggernaut gaming company but management they went in all direction based only on 1 IP.

Relientk77367d ago

We are definitely getting an Angry Birds Sonic edition

DarXyde367d ago

I feel like that was kind of what Shadow the Hedgehog was.

Plenty of edge and seething, and if you played it traditionally (without weapons), Shadow throws himself at enemies.

... Similar enough

Fonsecap367d ago

Nah, we're getting Alexx "The Angry" Kid :)

FinalFantasyFanatic366d ago

Oh god, a mobile game about Angry Sonic, I suppose we already have Ugly Sonic, why not?

Sega upping their own value if anyone wants to acquire them! Not just getting console expertise but mobile now as well.

GameBoyColor367d ago

I doubt being acquired is in their plans. I used to think sega was in the dumps like capcom was in 2012-2014 but they own so many arcades, pachinko machines, and they publish western games in japan. They were able to buy out atlus and now this company, i think they in a position to not be touched.

Viljong367d ago

Nice everything in finland is for sale. We even sold nokia and our own electricity network so global corporations can charge us from something that is made with taxpayer money.

Shane Kim367d ago

Hey, kinda sounds like Sweden.

darkrider367d ago

Sega got angry birds. That's crazy. How did Microsoft let this one escape

thesoftware730367d ago

They were too busy buying the company that wasn't tanking. You know the top-rated ones.

Good for Sega, maybe they can right the ship.

LG_Fox_Brazil367d ago

The top-rated ones managed by rapists, you mean

Sega Nears Deal For ‘Angry Birds’ Mobile Game Maker

The Japan-based entertainment conglomerate is expected to pay about $1 billion for Rovio Entertainment.

sparky77370d ago

If you want to remain relevant you need a mobile powerhouse. MS got Minecraft, maybe King soon, T2 got Zynga, EA got Glu, Tencent got most of the other big ones.

Sony is likely looking for one too or they will be left behind.

Vengeance1138369d ago

Sony already owns the #2 highest grossing mobile game ever in Fate/Grand Order.
That game is close to Genshin Impact levels of monthly revenue.

Lifexline370d ago

Well angry birds still makes money so it’s not a dead horse. They just need another hit.

darthv72370d ago

Angry Sonic, Angry Tails, Angry Amy, Angry Knuckles, Angry Chaos....

Lifexline370d ago

Lol yeah you would be surprised at what could sell. I could see it.

porkChop369d ago

Angry Taxi might actually work.

blackblades370d ago (Edited 370d ago )

Looks like something MS would grab. I wont be surprised some how ms gets Sega with this included magically.

-Foxtrot369d ago

We could fund more games like Sonic Mania

We could buy the music rights back to Sonic 3

We could reboot some old franchises like Ristar, Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes or Golden Axe

...Nah. Angry Birds it is

Snookies12370d ago

Wait, have they even made anything since then? Thought they were a one-hit wonder lol.

darthv72370d ago

I didn't know they did a bunch of stuff prior to Angry Birds:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Pretty much everything since has been a spin off. Now maybe Sega will make Angry Chaos or something similar.

FallenAngel1984370d ago

Mojang only made one game and Microsoft still purchased them for $4 billion

Sometimes one property is all you need especially when it’s lucrative

MadLad369d ago

Angry Birds fell out of relevance years ago, but whatever they want to do lol.
