Amid rumours of Titanfall 2 for PS4, EA and Respawn reflect on a successful launch

Eurogamer: EA raised eyebrows by not announcing sales of Titanfall - a decision some took to indicate it had performed poorly. But Wilson told me the game beat sales expectations.

"Yeah!" he said enthusiastically. "Our expectations were high and it beat them."

An exact sales figure is unknown. EA COO Peter Moore told investors in a May 2014 financial call that Titanfall had sold 925,000 retail copies in the United States during its launch month - a number that didn't include digital sales. EA confirmed to Eurogamer this week that Titanfall is the best-selling game on Xbox One lifetime to date, based on its own data, with a high attach rate.

"I think it went really well," Wilson said of the launch. "The demand, the anticipation was huge. People came out in droves to play that game.

You should give these guys more credit. This game is pretty sweet, and isn't made by those other clowns... :/

It would be helpful to see a breakdown of sales across the 3 different formats 360, Xbox One and PC. The openness of the statement means that it likely includes 360 sales as well.

Titanfall Xbox One released 11th March
Titanfall Xbox 360 released 8th April
Technically both in the same month!

Remember when Microsoft Wire released a press statement that said "Xbox*" has sold the most in April yet NPD figures showed the Xbone had sold much less than PS4? It turned out that the asterisks referred to a tiny footnote that said Microsoft were including 360 sales in the figure! Not technically a lie but designed to mislead.

EA's Peter Moore personally championed Titanfall on Xbox and has publicly praised Microsoft for making Phil Spencer head of Xbox so of course it makes sense to present it as a success. Early tracking reveals the game has had very high attach rate to Xbone consoles however the fact that Xbox One only sales have not been released makes you think that it has under performed on the console and increases the likelihood of a sequel appearing on the other new-gen console.

JBSleek4016d ago

Yea but after a month the game really looses its interest.

christocolus4016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

@pumbleback

What is it to you? You will never buy an xbone (as you call it)cos you hate ms and the sytsem, you also never liked the game so why does peter moores statement offend you? What is it to you? Do you gain anything from coming up with these theories? Titanfall on xbox one sold a lot more copies than the 360 version.its obvious he was referring to the xbox one version but you are here twisting his comments and downplaying the entire article.why?

“peter moore personally championed titanfall on xbox and praised microsoft for making phil spencer head of xbox”

Lol. The entire industry praised microsoft for that move(gamers&devs alike), even the competition did. So what are you on about? Give it a rest.stop allowing bias cloud your judgement.

Milesprowers4016d ago

All these walls of text, yet no one mentions Front Mission for the Super Nintendo.

Mr Pumblechook4016d ago

@christocolus

You said "The xbox one sold a lot more copies than 360 but you are here downplaying that." The reality is you don't know and I don't know, NOBODY knows because EA & Microsoft are unwilling to share that information. There is no need to feel defensive because somebody wants to know more facts rather then accept vague PR statements! YOU should want to know too. Regardless of whether it is Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo it is good to seek the truth.

Saying Xbone doesn't mean you hate Microsoft - it is just a nickname that has stuck. I have a 360 but that never had a nickname so it's just called a 360. Here in the UK if you go to a retail shop like GAME the staff (many who are mad on Xbox) call it Xbone. Even Phil Spencer has said he accepts the name will stick.

It's funny that you say I will never buy an Xbone when you don't know me! I was first in line to get a 360 when it launched over here. Im on a budget and last November I could only buy one next-gen console so I made the decision to opt for the PS4. I based MY decision on these factors, that it was much cheaper then the Xbone (especially in the UK). I didn't want the Kinect camera. It had an exclusive I wanted Killzone (disappointing in the end) and the multi platform games I was buying; AC IV, Call of Duty and Battlefield all looked better on the PS4. However if somebody else on a budget bought an Xbone because they wanted the exclusives and the Kinect functionality that is ABSOLUTELY FINE! I'm not going to attack them for their purchase decision! Just because somebody owns a different console from you it doesn't mean they are an enemy.

But as it happens at this point in time both PS4 and Xbone offer roughly the same third party games and few exclusives. So if you are an Xbone owner there is no rush to get a PS4, and if you are a PS4 owner there is no rush to get an Xbone. Both good, not necessary to have both yet as 2015 will be the year for the killer exclusives. I hope to buy an Xbone at the next price drop this year so I can play the Master Chief collection.

One last thing. We are all people and all have different opinions but I see you take pleasure in childishly insulting my name (not that I mind) when you could easily copy and paste it - a form of racial prejudice. Because to not call somebody by their name is to try and say you race is superior to theirs and so they are not worthy of this decorum.

We are all people and all have different opinions. Feel free to disagree with me about whatever you want, but please lets all leave prejudice out of it and keep this a place where we can all be civil and respectful to one another. Peace :)

Say what you want but that's was almost 1mil for X1 version at launch for ONLY the retail sales http://titanfallblog.com/20... not includinig digital and I saw alot of folks including most I talked to online bought the digital version,, and that was also ONLY for the US, when you add digital, 360 and pc and now it's June I'd think the game is well over 3mil probably close to 4mil, which is excellent for a new IP.

4Show: "Say what you want but that's was almost 1mil for X1 version at launch"

The facts I read are that

* Titanfall sold 925,000 in the USA during it's first month. And..
* Titanfall is the best selling game on Xbox One lifetime to date.

No where in that quote does it say the 925,000 were all Xbox 1 sales. Maybe the website left that part out. Have you got a link to where EA say all those 925,000 sales were all Xbox 1 sales?

ocelot074016d ago

What is wrong with calling it a Xbone? It is just short for Xbox One. XB - XB360 - XBone

darthv724016d ago

Looks like Stig has joined Respawn. Perhaps to bring his style of kick-assery to a possible sequel.

Milesprowers4016d ago

Titanfall was made by the co-creators of Call of Duty

christocolus4016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

Nice to know it was a success for those involved. Congrats to respawn, ea and ms.the game is a blast to play and I'm glad it did good.respawn also gets to make a sequel.Nice.

Now when is the new dlc coming out? People need to know.my brother and his friends have been switching between this pvz and wolfenstein.

slutface4016d ago

Lol its never a good thing when a company boldly sidesteps numerical figures. It sold but not well enough. I can gamble $10,000 the sequel is multi platform.

JBSleek4016d ago

The article has numerical figures

coolbeans4016d ago

"An exact sales figure is unknown. EA COO Peter Moore told investors in a May 2014 financial call that Titanfall had sold 925,000 retail copies in the United States during its launch month - a number that didn't include digital sales."

And that's just right in the description too.

"EA confirmed to Eurogamer this week that Titanfall is the best-selling game on Xbox One lifetime to date, based on its own data, with a high attach rate."

Based on its own data? Does Activision have a rebuttal to this? Then again, Titanfall is still bundled with the system for free. Are those counted as "sales"?

Kayant4016d ago

UK - Yes
US - No

In terms of retail for NPD.

torchic4016d ago

it'll be interesting to see how well Titanfall 2 sells on PS4... Destiny seems like it will hook many of them

JBSleek4016d ago

What does Destiny have to do with anything? Titanfall 2 isn't launching soon...

torchic4016d ago (Edited 4016d ago )

it's all about association... Final Fantasy doesn't sell well on Microsoft consoles because when you think Final Fantasy, you think PlayStation. so people are more likely to buy a PS console to play FF.

Titanfall & Destiny are vying for the same audience, and if Destiny has the PS4 audience hooked then Titanfall won't sell as well there. during an earnings call EA said that Battlefield, Star Wars: Battlefront and Titanfall would rotate with one another so full-blown Destiny & Titanfall sequels will probably drop in 2017.

it's a phenomenon that happens quite a lot but not to sure if it applies here since Titanfall has so much universal hype now.

ThePope4016d ago

@torchic

What are you talking about? Destiny while yes a FPS, won't compete in the same space as a game like Titanfall. Destiny is an open world FPS RPG. and Titanfall is a pure arena shooter.

People may associate a particular game with a console, but its more common to associate a genre with a console. FPS and Xbox, or JRPG's with PS.

Absolutely insane. Man I'm hope they land on their feet EA needs to get the shit together badly....

This is why this industry has slow releases and none compelling games.

Why would anyone willingly work in the VG industry or specifically for one of these globocorp organizations that put you in constant fear of losing your livelihood based on terrible choices made by idiotic management, not the people with talent making the actual games?
