Sony Worldwide Studios Boss Shuhei Yoshida “Apologizes” for PS4 Game Delays, Explains Why It’s Happening
Delays always suck to hear about but I am sure they will use the extra time wisely.
I think Sony has done a great job supporting the PS4 with first party games in the PS4's first year, so despite some disappointing delays, Im very happy to have bought one at launch. inFamous: Second Son released earlier this year and is easily my favorite game this gen so far, and then we'll be getting TLoU: Remastered next month followed by LittleBigPlanet 3, Driveclub, and PlanetSide 2 during the holidays. Then The Order releases right in the beginning of next year, so I feel they have a great span of releases already
I think that these delays will get uncommon after every studio has released it's first nextgen game. It's just that they realize during development that they can do so much more with the hardware.
Sony has released Knack, Killzone, Infamous and MLB the Show since the PS4 launched. Is that what we define as a great job?
LBP3, Driveclub, TLoU and The Order early next year! Cannot wait. I'm eagerly looking forward to inFAMOUS First Light as well.
@Neonridr I won't define it as a great job but I would say it is at least decent. AAA titles are not your everyday game development, they take loads of years and lots of money. And if you want to get them done well based on the size of the studio, it can take even more time. Which is why when I see people on the site asking for new ips instead and no sequels or only AAA and no indies, I smile to myself about how self entitled or ignorant they are I don't have a PS4 yet, but that list with indies and multiplats will definitely satisfy me until more AAA comes, Drive club, LBP3, Last of Us Remastered and some more I think am missing, I would be excited to own a PS4
fall 15 is when exclusives kick off,im cool with 'superior' 3rd party games till then. the gen has shifted enough to warrant a purchase for me. games started getting incredibly inferior on the ps3(watchdogs) and i had $400 to spare so why the hell not? im buying atleast 10 more games this year atleast ,9 of which i would of got anyways on the ps3. so yeah.
3rd party games do count as things you can play as well... You know, if things get really desperate.
@ neonridr Would you have rather them abandoned the PS3 (like some other company) and release GoW:A, GT6, TLoU, Beyond Two Souls, Ratchet and Clank: Nexus as PS4 launch titles? You seem to ignore the fact that Sony was making AAA games for two consoles simultaneously. I'd say considering that fact, the PS4 launch window titles were good. Coupled with the indies, f2p, and better multiplat games, I'd say Sony has done a great job so far ensuring PS gamers are satisfied (obviously not them all). Please enlighten me, what do you define as a great job?
"Would you have rather them abandoned the PS3 (like some other company) and release GoW:A, GT6, TLoU, Beyond Two Souls, Ratchet and Clank: Nexus as PS4 launch titles?" Exactly.
2015 looks like it will be a brilliant year for PS4, just worried about how 2016 pans out when looking at the rate of delays, because they might have too much and it gets crowded.
I loved the games that Sony showed at E3. Especially Bloodborne being exclusive was enough to win me over. Uncharted blew me away but I'm not satisfied that Sony had all those game studios and chose to delay them. This is just damage control. How hard is it to show a 30 second clip of a game or even a teaser trailer or maybe even a target render. From someone that isn't new to E3, I don't expect those games to show anytime soon anyways. Rockstar basically showed a title of a game for their E3 showing and never heard from since. Even though it's stupid to do it that way, I would like to believe something is happening behind closed doors.
@Abash Agreed, it's nothing new Delaystation 4 :) But im happy with it since Delaystation uno. Better wait then half-baked like BF3 with patches... you know.
@Volkama I'm desperate cause I cant find the time to play all the games I want while people whine about not having enough? Destiny, The Last Of US, Tomb Raider (yes I havent played it yet), The evil within, Dying Light, Batman, Project Cars, Dragon Age, GTA V, No mans Sky etc are just some of the games on my must play list until December and no time to play even half of them... Frustrating.. OT: I dont care if a game gets delayed for a year (more than enough games to play in-between)as long as that delay delivers in quality!
Just gives me time to wait for a price drop until games I wanna play on it come out. I don't mind waiting until UC4, the other exclusives don't really interest me enough to buy one now PSbore. Greatness waits and waits and waits
Just goes to show what entitled, impatient brats gamers have become these days, that he has to apologise for delays...that make games BETTER, and give us a better game for our hard earned money. Ridiculous. I WELCOME delays. They suck ass, and the longer wait is frustrating as hell, but in the end you get a better game, there's nothing to apologise for, imo. Just imagine if DriveClub released at launch.....it wouldn't be half as good as it is now. Some people may be happy with having half-assed, or plain unfinished games just so they have "ammo" for the console war ("my console has more exclusives than yours blah blah"), but a real gamer should be happy with game delays, after the initial frustration of course, lol.
These gen titles from different publishers that i play Sony- killzone shadow fall, knack, infamous second son, mlb 14 theshow Microsoft - forza 5 , ryse son of rome, dead rising3 Ubisoft - assassins creed 4, watchdogs, child of light, south park , rayman legends EA-battlefield 4, nfs rivals 2k - nba 2k 14 Squareenix - tomb raider definitive even i owned ps3 version of TB ,thief , finalfantasy 14rr Konami-mgs 5 ground zero Bethesda- wolfenstein new order + transistor that im playing at the moment published by supergiant And im thinking of getting murdered soulsuspect by squareenix I think its a pretty good list for for 7 months that i have my ps4 and xbox one even i get all the multiplatform for my ps4 Im not gonna include wiiu games
@neonridr and what has Microsoft released from first party studios? Not games they payed exclusivity for but actually from their first party studios? I'll wait while you try to find a favorable reply to that.
Microsoft haven't released nearly enough games for the One either. Unfortunately 2 fails don't make a win.
Forza 5 is the only first party game. Ryse and Dead Rising 3 are exclusives but still 3rd party so they don't count. Even worse off eh? Why do you feel the need to throw MS under the bus? I was merely commenting on what someone else called great first party support for the PS4. MS isn't in any better of a situation either. Oh and by the way, I own a PS4, not an Xbox One. I also own 3 out of those 4 first party games from Sony (didn't buy Knack, maybe I will try it if it's the PS+ game of the month down the road).
Isn't DR3 going to pc too?
@Flutterby Yup funny thing about it most of those "Exclusive FTP/MMO's are on pc or coming to pc but people fail to see that @timotim don't waste your here man
@timotim, How about you take a look at the same list for Sony? (Only counting games they put on PS4, not counting games like Gran Turismo 6 or Vita games which were not put on PS4) Killzone: Shadow Fall Knack Infamous: Second Son MLB 14: The Show Resogun Sound Shapes Doki-Doki Universe Escape plan Entwined Flower Flow Dead Nation: Apocalypse Well would ya look at that, same number of games on both our lists!
Haki- It reminds me of how a PS4 fanboy the other day claimed that Planetside 2 and Final Fantasy XIV and XV are sony exclusive. Last I checked Planetside 2 came out two years ago for PC and XIV is for PC, and XV is Xbone in addition to PS4.
Project Spark Forza Kinect Rivals Killer Instinct Powerstar Golf Halo: Spartan Assault and many more coming this year this is ofcourse not including other exclusives that come from 3rd party studios but microsoft FUNDED the game, such as RYSE, TITANFALL etc. This is not buying exclusivity THIS IS FUNDING A GAME/OUTSOURCING. MS first party studios: United States 343 Industries – Halo series Connected Experiences – Responsible for cloud service on Xbox, servers and online features Good Science Studio – Kinect Adventures, Kinect Fun Labs Kids and Lifestyle Entertainment – Next generation fitness project - Original IP Leap Experience Pioneers – Unannounced Game - Original IP Platform Next Studios – Unannounced Game - Original IP Microsoft Studios – Mobile Gaming – ilomilo Microsoft Studios – Redmond Publishing – Overseeing multiple projects in conjunction with development studios based in the Americas Team Dakota – Project Spark Turn 10 Studios – Forza Motorsport series Twisted Pixel Games – The Gunstringer, LocoCycle, 'Splosion Man series Xbox Entertainment Studios – Various interactive television projects Xbox Live Productions – South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play!, South Park: Tenorman's Revenge, Avatar Kinect Europe Lionhead Studios – Fable series, Black & White series, Unannounced MMO-like New IP Lift London – Multiple AAA Cloud Based gaming projects (4+) Microsoft Studios – EMEA Publishing – Overseeing projects in conjunction with development studios based in Europe, Middle East and Asia Press Play – Max: The Curse of Brotherhood,Totem Rare Ltd. – Banjo-Kazooie series, Viva Piñata, Kameo: Elements of Power, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kinect Sports Soho Productions – Kinect Sesame Street TV, Upload Studios Canada BigPark – Joy Ride series, Kinect Sports: Season Two Black Tusk Studios – Gears of War series I currently have 12 games on XO, 4 on ps4. There are definately games to play. Stop talking smack.
Sony uses delays as an advantage. Let's take a look of how Drive Clubs graphics and technology improved.
Hahaha i wanted to say that nobody here seems to care cause their precious Sony is the one apologizing now Please understand
Apology accepted! Now apologize for the price increase in Canada, actually lower said price increase to our American counterparts and I'll call it even!
Sony's MRSP is $399.99 and it's the retailers that increased the price NOT Sony. EB Games was the first buyer to up the price with all other retailer following suit. They also saw a chance to increase gross profit and margin by increasing prices. Because they deal in U.S dollars when buyers buy stock.
In scandinavia they sell the EU X1 (X1 not yet released here) för 10% lower than recommended price and PS4 10% over the recommended price, retailers stealth increased the PS4 price after a couple of months. I wonder if the X1 without Kinetec will turn cheaper(here) than PS4 which would be ironic.
I sure hope so cause the longer I wait the higher my expectations go.
"And they (gamers) say they’d rather wait to play the best game the team can make rather than play a rushed title; because each development is such a big effort." and that's why l like the PlayStation brand.
* This past Gen was 70% rushed garbage titles. The wait sucks, but nothing is worse than waiting 2-3 years to play a game, only to find out it's full of bugs, glitches & isn't even fun. * Way too many let downs Last gen. For gamers I'd say: If the wait is too long, invest in a 2nd console or a handheld to keep you occupied.
Or build or buy a gaming PC.....
Couldn't of said it better myself, here's a bubble for typing what I was going to:-)
Its happening because they have a really good start to console sales...they can afford to have a soft holiday lineup at this point plus they are using indie & 3rd party to fill the gaps. Its a play right out of the Xbox 360 book.
Even with a good start, I will still be scared to push off too many games.
I do agree that its not what you should do but their strong start is allowing them the breathing room to have these early hiccups and push titles out to 2015. Again, not ideal but its a choice of put a bad game out to bolster line up now or push to 2015 and hope your success so far + 3rd party support is enough and allow the game to get better for 2015.
A good start to the consoles is a reason to release more games, not less. Means there are actually people there to buy them. It is picking up though. Some big games coming to entertain us this year. From both 1st parties, and from 3rd parties too.
"they can afford to have a soft holiday lineup" - Sure that's possible but I don't see why they would want to be going over budget on so many projects given that comes with extra money spent on development, having to have more than budgeted marketing campaigns and the other expenses that come with it. I mean it really doesn't sound like good management to continually delay games just because you are "coasting" at the moment. Both console manufactures are relying on third parties, indie and small scale titles for the rest of 2014. PS4 - Driveclub Last of Us remastered LP3 XB1 - Halo master collection Ori and the Blind Forest (It's a downloadable title produced by a MS owned studio) Sunset overdrive Horizon 2 The list above is what I can remember and are purely titles either funded/published by Sony/MS or produced by first parties. You can argue for Infamous: First Light as it's a standalone. Beta's are not games so they don't really count. So really in reality there isn't that much of a gap and both MS and Sony are continue to relay on third parties, indies and f2p titles to fill the void.
hate to be captain buzzkill but micros big exclusives are coming in 2015, along with nintendo, weres there apologies.
sorry about that. Sincerely, Microsoft and Nintendo
Bwahahaha Please understand !
Sunset overdrive and forzq horizon 2 are heavy hitters.
Don't forget that Halo master chief collection for $60. That's gonna persuade a lot of people
@True_Samurai Halo fans are already sold on the Xbox One. Everyone else could care less about the series...ESPECIALLY after Halo 4. Don't get me wrong, Halo was great...I just tired of playing online with 12 year olds (and those who ACT like they are 12!) I, and many others, stuck a fork in this franchise when Bungie left and 343 took over.
No they're not. Forza horizon is lucky to hit 1 million and well after the studios record I wouldn't get too excited about sunset overdrive best keep your expectations low.
Nintendo actually has a number of good games coming out in time for the holiday this year, as well as 2015.
I could care less if a game is an exclusive, third party or from an indie. I just want quality well made games that aren't a waste of my money. This entire argument over the source of the game, or the notion that only exclusives or first party games are good and third party indie games are barely worth playing is just about as moronic as I've ever seen. I've been beta testing Assetto Corsa and it's a fantastic game. Easily as good looking as Drive CLub and much more realistic in terms of car handling and physics. Also, the upcoming Indie game Star Citizen is more than likely going to set the benchmark for video game graphics for the next 5 years. It's so far beyond any current games graphics, and i wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox Two and PS5 in a half decade have problems running graphics of that high of level. What I love about that crowd-funded project is the developers were some of the most influential people in terms of video game design and how there are few people developing games today who weren't influenced by their earlier contributions to gaming. They're former employees of Origin Systems, a small game dev from the late 80's till around 2000, when EA got it's filthy hands on their company and pretty much took it apart, then bankrupt them. They're known for the Ultima and wing commander series, both of which were groundbreaking achievements in gaming excellence.
its ok well have so much exclusives in the future you could call a dog dogcat
And you sir win oddest comment of the day.
dogcat? me = mindblown
That's obviously Catdog not Dogcat.......
Still plenty of stuff to play on the platform.
absolutely. I still have a backlog of games, not to mention there are some great AAA 3rd party games releasing this fall to help tide us all over. MS and Nintendo are guilty of the same thing, so it looks like 2015 is going to be one heck of a year in terms of exclusive games. Good times to be an owner of multiple consoles, it will feel like christmas every few weeks.
I still can't imagine that all of those games are going to hit next year. Just from a sales standpoint, I can't imagine to many of the publishers want their larger releases cannibalizing each other sales. I think it was 2011 when Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, Batman AC, Crysis 2, KZ 3, LA Noire, Infamous 2, Resistance 3, Rage, BF3, just to name a few. I know, I for one couldn't afford to purchase all of those games that year and had to wait until they got cheaper/used.
look at October 7th of this year alone. Cannibal Holocaust right there..
lol good point... i will apparently need a second job in October.
I think that there's combination of reasons for the delays. Shuei is probably correct in his assertion that developers are aiming higher because of the ease with which you can achieve things on PS4. If you recall the cell development initially, devs felt limited because of their unfamiliarity with it, so they probably didn't set such loft goals. Now, with it being closer to PC architecture, they see that the ability is there...they just have to focus their code. Also, with the fact that Sony can pad its lineup with indies and F2P offerings, they don't have to worry about a gaming drought. Add to this, the fact that 3rd parties are set to have some major releases this Fall, and it is easy to see that they feel safe in letting their IP marinate until the developers feel that they are ready to release. Sure, this might suck for those that just can't wait. However I'd much rather have a game that is as polished and finished as possible, then a game that needs patch after patch just to get it up to snuff post launch. At least, at that point, developers can be judged and can't blame the publisher for whatever shortcomings that the game might have due to a constrained development cycle.
Well said Great AAA titles take time to make, especially by the standards Sony set in terms of polish and quality. Xbox fans are quick to judge Sony for the delays and lack of games but most Sony fans are willing to wait.
I think they're just more willing to make excuses instead of facing reality. Every person I know who owns a PS4 complains about the lack of games, and the ones that have been released are either not very good or too short.
What reality are you talking about? The reality that most people are not objective and are quickly influenced by other peoples opinions?
Any one else picturing that South Park meme with the guy saying "we're sorry"
Sorry, we're sorry...... Sorry
IM NOT BUYING A PS4 TILL ATLEAST A YEAR PASSES. ITS NOT BECAUSE OF THE GAMES IM A GRAPHICS FREAK SOO I WOULD LOVE THE UPGRADED GRAPHICS. I DNT TRUST NEW CONSOLES, BOUGHT A PS3 A FEW MONTHS AFTER LAUNCH PAID $700 (BAHAMAS) HAD IT FOR ONLY 9 MONTHS BEFORE IT DIED SOO ILL WAIT THIS TIME.
I don't blame you! I waited about six months to make sure that there were no glaring faults in the system before making my purchase...I also waited until Infamous was released, so I actually had a good game to play on it. But once I saw that there weren't large numbers of consoles frying themselves, I felt reasonably comfortable buying one...even though it's still the "launch version". Now, my only regret is that I didn't wait for the Destiny bundle with the white PS4! Ah well, the rest of my gear is black anyway. Oh, and by the way...there is a little button on your keyboard, right above the left shift key...labeled "Caps Lock". Press it! :)
