Final Fantasy XIV could be coming to Xbox One after all, Yoshida confirms Microsoft talks

Producer and director of the Japanese MMORPG Naoki Yoshida gave Xbox owners a glimmer of hope in a chat with us during the E3 trade show in Los Angeles. Through a Square Enix interpreter, Yoshida told us that the company is in talks with Microsoft over the restrictive Xbox Live rules that currently prevent massively multiplayer games from working across platforms. If successful, the game will be released for, at the very least, the Xbox One.

"We really want to do an Xbox One version," he said. "As a big Xbox player myself.

Great to hear.

Launch parity clause/F2P game requirement need to go.

bicfitness4033d ago

Yes, but will MS allow cross-platform play? PS players are already integrated with PC, mind you. Otherwise there's no point as the community will be dead.

Kayant4033d ago

iirc it's a must based on how the game is setup.

"The main reason from our side is that I don't want the community to be divided; to be split into two or more," said Yoshida in an interview with RPGsite. "For example, one player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 version, and I'm playing the Xbox version - but we're not able to join the same game servers. That is just... I just don't like the idea. I disagree with it."

"To be frankly honest with you, there are now so many mobile devices, smart phones, everything - why would you ever just stick to one platform from the hardware aspect? Just - make it open to everyone?"

Is it possible to release it on Windows that way it could be cross platform? Im just trying to figure out a way so Xbox One players can get this. Im getting a PS4 in couple days so im covered.

Volkama4033d ago

MS made the exception for FFX, and Live was a lot more closed then than it is now. They allow major publishers to hook in now (see the Watch_dogs UPLAY problems and EA hosting bad BF4 servers).

Final Fantasy was a bigger name when FFX was about, but it could still happen.

Volkama4033d ago

I mean FFXI of course. That was cross-platform between 360, PS2 and PC. Flopped pretty hard on the 360 though. And looked a lot like the PS2 version.

With Phil Spencer being the head. This game will probably get the go ahead.
This might be the first game where PS /PC and Xbox gamers can play together!

shammgod4033d ago

That would be awesome...more games need to do this

MrWonderful4033d ago

As President Reagan would say "Microsoft tear down this wall!"

christocolus4033d ago

Yoshida has always wanted the game on xbox, its nice to hear he is back in talks with MS. I'm happy about this. I think they are making it easier now by lowering the barriers and removing some restrictions now. Oddworlds new and tasty ,contrast and warframe are coming to the console. Johnathan blow is also onboard now. Its great.

Phil and his team seem to be doing a great job.

XiSasukeUchiha4033d ago

I'm happy that barriers are getting removed:)

0P-Tigrex4031d ago

Mr. Yoshida... Tear down that wall.

djplonker4033d ago

Cool but they shouldn't have had that clause in the first place I was playing final fantasy 11 on my 360 last gen with pc and ps2 players!

TheCagyDies4033d ago

Don Mattrick - "NO"
Phil Spencer - currently back in negotiations.

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac2d ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

anast3d ago

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac2d ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

anast2d ago

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

PapaBop3d ago

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac2d ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.
