Big news like a new Zelda and Uncharted are taking E3 by storm, but a very big reveal has been lost in the shuffle.

I'm pretty sure cross platform play has been around for a couple years. I used my vita and my ps4 to play agains my self to get online trophies in pixle junk shooter the other day.

MrLeitungswasser3607d ago

No kidding, I had no idea that game had cross-play. It's around, but not in a big way. I'd like to see more games use cross-platform play.

darthv723607d ago

My idea of cross platform would be taking a game on the 360 and being able to play against those on a ps3.

What this type of cross platform is...is not the same. this is more of cross generational play. Meaning it is a game able to be played within the same parent companies platforms but on different generations.

When we get a game that lets PC vs XB1 vs PS4...then we can talk. But all 3 platform holders need to get it figured out. MS, Sony and Steam could do wonders to heal this great divide in modern gaming.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt3607d ago

PC vs PS4 has already been done but we need more popular games to do it...

PS4 PS3 Vita has already been done and a game will be released next month where they can play together on the same team different console...

Xbox is behind....

but yes Cross Platform would be X360 vs PS3 type shit i agree @darth

thehitman3607d ago

@ Darth I believe the only way for that to happen if the publishers decided to make their own online service with shared servers and most likely it would be a paid/subscription service. MS/Sony are already charging to get online gaming so I doubt it will be a popular idea to charge extra for cross-platform play.

PC/PS combos though we are already seeing a few of those hope a lot more games have that available especially MMO genre games.

darthv723607d ago

@hitman...a game with the scope of battlefield could do it. EA has their own servers that could handle the likes of pc players, xb1 and ps4 players as well. Imagine all of them playing on the same maps with/against each other.

In fact it was quite a let down that such an endeavor was not mentioned at the EA presser. such potential but alas...

rdgneoz33607d ago

@thehitman Sony is fine with cross platform play. There are a bunch of games that have PlayStation and PC gamers on the same server. Also vita vs PS3 with the likes of PlayStation Allstars or PS4 with pixel junk shooter.

One of the reasons why FF XIV isn't on xbox is because SE groups everyone together (multiple servers, but PS3/PS4/PC gamers all playing together on the same servers), unlike ESO where gamers are seperated by system.

elninels3607d ago

@darthv72

Unfortunately keyboard&mouse input would cause pc domination in many competitive online games.

thehitman3607d ago

@rdgneoz3
Ya I know FF and a few others like Warframe. Problem is not whether Sony has a problem but its MS and then getting 2-3 platforms in sync (patches etc) would never fly if 1 platform is holding the rest back so you would need an outside service to maintain that. Gamers would have to probably pay a premium price above what we do now to play and I am just not sure whether the market is there for it. FF is like 14-15 a month.

Also @ Darth EA has MAJOR troubles with server hosting. They are notorious with having shitty servers so I would not rely on them for being able to get the job done. They botched SimCity and BF was riddled for awhile. Getting a game of the caliber to become crossplatform would definitely help the service whoever is running it but its not very likely for it to happen. CoD/BF and all the EA sports games like fifa/madden would have to be under it to really make it run off.

guitarded773607d ago (Edited 3607d ago )

Portal 2 on PS3 had PC and PS3 cross-platform play.

Volkama3607d ago

MS tried cross-platform with Shadowrun, but that was cross-platform on their own service (Live and Games For Windows Live).

They also allowed Square Enix to host their own cross platform servers for Final Fantasy 10, back when the name "Final Fantasy" held some power. XBox, PC, PS2 all hand in hand.

Live used to be 100% closed, they didn't used to allow the Live servers to connect to any external servers what-so-ever. Until EA insisted, using the likes of FIFA and Madden.

We could see PS4/One cross-platform some day, but only if a truly powerful partner demands it.

FF14 on PC, PS3, PS4/Vita wants to say hi to the author of this article

The article clearly stated that it has been done before.

This happening with X1 and 360 could prove to be more popular than against PC. I say this because the network, controller and communication are all the same. plus most X1 owners have friends and family who are still with 360.

Little games like this would work perfectly. I would like to see them port some of those windows8 apps and games to X1 and play cross platform

escott0133607d ago

Yeah, I remember back when Halo 2 was the most popular game to play, during the early days of Xbox Live.
I was still playing Halo 2 on the original Xbox. I was even playing in the same games as people on the Xbox 360.
Cross platform is a fairly early concept but it hasn't been used much because of marketing strategies, which is unfortunate.

Magicite3607d ago

Lol they are putting zelda on the same level as uncharted, pathetic.

Volkama3607d ago

I would actually need to check your history to see which game is undeserving, so it can't be that pathetic. I am not going to check your comments though, as I suspect it would be an unpleasent experience.

So which game doesn't deserve a mention? Can Uncharted not compare to the lavish history and prestige of Zelda? Or is Zelda not fit to clean the boots of the revered Uncharted games?

deafdani3607d ago

Let's see where Uncharted is in 25 years. Then we can talk.

:)

Am I only one who thought Rainbow 6 Siege was the best game shown? If you missed the MP demo (pre-alpha), you gotta watch it, it was amazing.

Clown_Syndr0me3606d ago

Highlight of E3 for me. Was simply amazing, yet I see next to no one mention it online.
I hoped for a new Rainbow 6 for years after Vegas, then I kinda forgot about it. Seeing this trailer got me excited. I haven't been excited about any game in a long time, not like this anyway!

MysticStrummer3606d ago

No Man's Sky for me, but Rainbow 6 Siege was in my top 5.

JsonHenry3607d ago

Seeing as how in 2014 this is supposed to be a "big reveal" makes me really sad. This should be the standard. Not the exception.

geddesmond3607d ago

I've been playing with PC players on my PS4 while playing FF14 these past few months. Yes it is a great thing to have as the game has more player, but nothing major and certainly not news worthy

djplonker3607d ago

Final fantasy xi was cross platform with - pc , ps2 , xbox 360 before microsoft changed thier policy's and that is also why they dont have ffXiv a realm reborn on xbox one!

For some reason microsoft doesn't want xbox gamers to mix with playstion and pc players :/

VforVideogames3607d ago

look at all this sony fanboys talking smack about cross play on XBOX 360 and XBOX ONE but ill bet you it would have been ok if it where ps3 and ps4 right?

Blasphemy3607d ago

noone is talking about it because its not really that big of a deal. i thought they were talking about something like ps3/xbox360/pc. ff xi was the first and only game to date that i know of to do cross platform play of the big 3.

King-u-mad3607d ago

The oldest Cross play game i know is FFXI (PS2, PC) in 2002 in Japan, 2004 US. The Xbox360 was added to that list in 2006. All platforms were able to play freely together.

This article is 12 years late...

pixelsword3606d ago

Dust 514 is cross-platform play betwixt the PC and PS3.

S2Killinit3606d ago

Helldivers will feature cross platform between all playstation consoles.

Its one of my most anticipated exclusives. Cant wait. Not sure why there was no news of it in the Conference.

FF14 has cross platform between the ps3/ps4 and pc. This is NBD.

coolbeans3607d ago

That avatar seems perfect for you shooting down the article. :P

I thought there was another PS3/PC or 360/PC game before that too. Maybe not.

ThePsychoGamer3607d ago

Pretty sure Portal 2 also had cross platform between PS3 and PC

neocores3607d ago

ps3 and vita and now ps4 have had cross play for awhile. like final fantasy 14.
Xbox does not have many because of their policies about cross gaming and what not. why final fantasy 14 did not come out for Xbox.
