As the age of next-gen approaches, we look back on the games that influenced us and are worthy of being considered one of the most defining games of the last generation.
Uncharted changed how games are made forever. The Last of Us proved that video games transcend other entertainment industries like movies, literature, etc Demon's Souls saved JRPG in the west and brought back the respect Ni No Kuni proved that video games as art form Bioshock brought the shock value in video game story telling CoD 4 Minecraft! Lego Batman Batman: Arkham Asylum Red Dead Redemption DC Universe Online Mobile Suit Gundam Batte Operation F2P on its 2nd year and still doing great! Gravity Rush puts all of a gaming device's features in to full use!
THIS^^^^^^!!!! Exactly how I feel. And there are countless other examples I could mention. For me, the one that got me in to console gaming (Although I was a computer gamer growing up in 1980!) Was Resident Evil. The first one. I saw this at my friends house and immediately bought a PS1 and the game. 1 word describes it....AWESOME.
Not a bad list however I would take out Saints Row The Third and Tekken and put in Gears of War and if any fighting game should be on the list SF4. Oh and perhaps AC2 instead of the first, 2s formula was so good AC4 could copy it and get praise even today. The more I think about it CoD4 is more defining for its genre than Halo, and this coming from probably one of the biggest Halo 3 fans. CoD4 just had a much larger impact, and not in a good way lol. To this day no game does what Halo does on console, no console game to my knowledge thrives off of arena style competition and user created content I would love to say a game like TES and Fallout but no game to my knowledge is anything like them
Yeah I'd replace ac with ac2, the mechanics were so repetitive in number one it put me off for years! And no, I'd keep h3 over cod4, it Brought the matchmaking system to the last gen in a very good way
Just curious what was so good about Halo 3 matchmaking system at the time. It was my first online game, so I do not no the history of matchmaking very well. All I could really find was this on the wikipedia page "Matchmaking saw its next major evolution with the release of Halo 2 in 2004. The clan culture needed to support dedicated servers had not made the leap to consoles, and expecting players to self-host had proved limiting. Halo 2 resolved the issue by automating the self-hosting process with the twin concepts of playlists and parties, a system which proved so successful that it quickly became the second industry standard for matchmaking." This however relates to Halo 2 not 3, this makes me think how the hell do people insult Halo and Bungie this literally has been the standard on consoles all gen.
@LAWSON72 it Brought that to 360. Still the best matchmaking for last gen for me!
For me.... Gears of War. I mean, wow Uncharted. Nuff said Geometry wars. Cheap and good Mass effect (my favorite game) Lair (things aren't always what you hope) COD 4... Took me from Halo multi Bad company 2 (still play multi) GTA IV. Craftmanship Mario galaxy. Top 3 series of generation
Geometry Wars is a great pick, I believe that that is said to have kicked off XBLA
If there's one thing I'm concerned about with any of these "best games of last gen" articles, it's that Persona 5, a PS3 game to be released down the road, is likely going to surpass at least a few of them. The generation is still going, guys. :)
This is not a best games of the gen list, just games that pretty much defined the gen and is mainly referring to games that had an effect on gaming this gen.
Fair enough. I also agree with your pitch for Gears of War. That really did a lot for the generation.
Oh Ok...SR3 is a genre defining game. Thats like saying a MCdonalds hamburger is fine dining.
