Nintendo refuses to confirm plans for Wii DVD player

It was announced earlier this week that Sonic Solutions' CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator would be used in a new version of the Wii and would provide users with DVD playback functionality. Sonic Solutions has now told GamesIndustry.biz that it has signed a "worldwide agreement" with Nintendo to provide an SDK to the platform holder to incorporate DVD playback into the Wii.

Despite revealing the worldwide agreement, it appears Nintendo does not want to reveal its plans for DVD playback outside of Japan.

"We have previously confirmed that an enhanced version of Wii capable of playing DVD's would launch at some point in the future in Japan," said a spokesperson for Nintendo UK. "This release simply confirms Sonic as the partner in that venture and that the new version of Wii will come to market in the second half of 2007. It does not confirm where it will launch. We are simply not making any further region specific announcements at this time."

seriously, who doesn't already have a DVD player? I have 6 devices in my house that can play dvds.

Are we talking about DVD playback!? This is ridiculous. Why is Nintendo or anybody acting like they are adding anything worth talking about? The wii does not come with DVD playback and no body seem to care. Now, all I can say if you buy a wii now, and them buy another wii just because nintendo added DVD playback you are a complete idiot! a morron! And you deserve to have 6 months of chronic diarrea!
... but wait.. aren't people buying the Nintendo DS light because is smaller and come in multiple colors? Or didnt some people buy 10 different versions of the Game Boy? .....
I guess there are more idiots than what I thought.

That's because they were better in some way.(with the exception of the micro, only morons would have bought that)

Although I do agree that a very minor update like DVD playing isn't worth rebuying a console.

Nintendo is a cheap bastard. I want dvd playback dammit. They're profiting on every wii they sell, then they sell controllers for 60 dollars (40 for remote, and 20 for nunchuck). I was going to get a wii, but these marketing decisions are nonsense.

Strange headline, as I thought the star of the show was Super RType. I almost bought RType Dimensions EX this last month and was just thinking, man I wish we had the SNES one somewhere on Switch. That's where I got my start w the series and I was beyond excited to see it drop this week!
