is about the only game coming to the 360 that i want, but it'll be on PC.... i think the prob with 360 is that 90% of their exclusive games goto PC or at least multi-platform, so if you own a ps3 and PC, you pretty much have every game covered, i don't need a 360, cause all their games are on other systems....
360 is not dead btw, and it prob will never die, they have a strong install base of dumb americans who keep buying multiple consoles, and i don;t mean other consoles... @HighDefinition- Funny that you say that, but I remember articles about the PS3 being the Next-Gen Dreamcast ropeor that the PS3 was dying shortly after launch. Was it true, hell no.

For the article, ever heard of flame bait! If people want to believe or wish for this to come true it eventually will, but no anytie soon. MS is still dumping money and there are several big games announced for this year and into 2009 and it is still selling well across the globe (not so well in Japan, but in general), especailly NA and the EU.

is it me, or all blogs that are negative towards the 360 considered worthy of posting?? seems to be the way it is on here nowadays. blogs are ok aslong as they attack microsoft, or generate flame wars.

High definition: as microsoft has kept pretty tight lipped about 09, it's hard to predict what they have in store. perhaps E3 mite shed some light on what they are prepping for next year. but i would think mass effect2, alan wake and halo wars will be confirmed soon... plus whatever else thay are lining up.

also, there's two confirmed mmo's for 09 in the form of "huxley" with reports i've read saying there will be 100-vs-100 battles happening in that potential beauty. and the one i'm most excited about being A.P.B. from one of the founding fathers of GTA.

after that, i think microsoft will start moving towards new hardware in late 2010. five years after the 360 launched. 5 years is enough time for any console imo. by that time, everything will have moved on, and the current big guns console specs will start to look dated to say the least.

i would think that microsoft will want to launch some new hardware with a game from bungie. seeing how long they take to make anything, i will be really surprised if they release a game before the end of 09...really surprised. and i'm certain that gears 3 will be a luanch title for the next xbox.

is doing a lot better than the original Xbox. And should outsell it by a big margin by the end of it's lifecycle. Microsoft has already spoken of wanting the 360 to have a 'long tail' or lifespan.

Plus with the attach rate being so high for games it is an attractive proposition for 3rd parties to want to give strong software support bc they will see a big return on their investment.

Of course not. The Xbox 360 has 20 million consoles in the wild. Dreamcast died on account it couldn't even surpass 6 million...and piracy. Judging by the millions of people that play online at any given instant, no. Are sales slowing? Yes. Is the Xbox 360 too expensive? Yes. It needs a price cut and soon. Considering Xbox 360 has stayed within a certain price range for almost 3 years it is both too expensive and quite healthy. PS3 doesn't outright oversell it otherwise we would have had a price cut much sooner. The virility in the console is on account it still competes price per point and moves units on par. Once the console drops in price, like it should, there will be more articles about it being "alive."

The Xbox 360 is overpriced and that is the reason it is selling slower. A price drop is needed. After that, it will pick up sales. Look at PS2 and you will see that the majority of sales were as a result of price drops. Most people did not buy it for $300 but rather $200 and less. The 360 is healthy considering it only had a minor price cut. Is it dead? No. Talking about it doesn't make it so either. Play Xbox Live and you will see that it is far from dead. Main point: Price equals sales. Right price equal even more sales.

Once Sony drops the price of the 40 Gb model of PS3 to $299...its all over for Microsoft. Microsoft would have to go $199 to $229...for the premium model to make the Xbox 360 a percieved value.

So what Microsoft should do first is do a massive price cut.

Under normal circumstances, your posts seem biased in regard to 360 matters, but I will agree with you on one thing, and that is that the 360 needs a significant price drop.

As it is, compared to the PS3, it does seem overpriced. It needs a good price drop that will give it a good boost in sales. Its taking a while for this to happen for some reason.

I agree completely with Microsoft's entry-level Core model approach.

They need to drop the price on that, AND THE ADDONS.

Make it competitive, and not a 20gig HD for $140, with only 13 gig's free, when you can slap in a 250gig drive in a PS3 for LESS.

The initial rush is over, they have their core fans, it's time to stop fleecing them and focus on more market share!

Drop the price of the ridiculous peripherals and lower the core model to $189 or less along with similar drops on the other models.

You'll see a strong resurgence in sales and with the revised chipsets out in August, there should be lower support costs due to reliability issues.

The price definitely needs to come down, because you can be sure when the cheaper drive is ready in July, Sony will be lowering their price either now, or for the holidays.

Regardless of agreeing with their tactics or not, MS competes better than anyone...So grab some popcorn, a controller, and enjoy the show.

you just take the average of roughly 3 years being on the market and roughly 19 million consoles sold. That is 6.3 million consoles a year worlwide. So at the end of the lifecycle(possibly 7 years), I would estimate, Microsoft should have sold 44 million consoles(6.3 mil x 7 yrs). That is a big jump from original Xbox - almost double.

And that is not even factoring in further price cuts and reaching the mass market price of $200. Obviously sales will fluctuate but still very possible. If I were Microsoft I would view that as a success being the new console on the block.

Sorry to disagree Lazy One but I have to when your wrong. X360 sold more its 1st year, because it had no competition. The 2nd year, it sold less than its 1st year. (Bucking the trend of nearly every other console in history that usually sells more year after year.) In its 3rd year it looks to be selling even less. If it kept the pace of its 1st year sales it would be near 30M by November. Now I'm not a Science Professor, nor a Physic's Major, but I believe this process is called "Slowing."

As for going from first to last, thanks for highlighting the sloppy mentality and flawed logic of the Xbot. They are not last. They just started later. If you aligned the sales figures since launch PS3 is selling alot quicker than Xbox, its even close to where PS2 was. XB is nowhere near it. XB hasn't past its own previous sales so really they're only selling to XB1 owners. Until they pass 25M they haven't taken a single customer from Sony, numbers wise. And PS3 will be around longer and get closer to 100M than anyone else. PS3 wasn't late, XB was early. Thats why it breaks and PS3 doesn't.

good points except for this one. not fair to say 360 only takes from PS3 when they pass their own TOTAL last-gen sales. meanwhile we're MID-cycle, so, apples to oranges buddy...

it would be more accurate to say, "until XB passes its own previous sales we won't know FOR SURE if they've taken any sony customers". but that would still leave room for error. since (as other comments to this article are stating) the entire video-game-playing demographic is growing, it's even possible to have all consoles increase sales over last-gen with no one losing a single customer to the competition. and imagine what a world that would be...no more rabid fanboys...

Well ofcourse its not dead. Secondly yeah it is slowing down in sales, its in 3rd year of it lifecycle, plus the major problem 360 doesn't have any first party titles like PS3 does. They had quite a few big exclusive that they were counting on this year. Ninja Gaiden 2(alright not much of splash as everyone was expecting), Too Human(most probably be decapitated by the reviewers but will be good), Fable 2(will be a great game, if peter just keeps his mouth shut), Alan Awake(delayed), HaloWars (delayed), Banjo(meh?), Viva2 (not my taste:(), and Gears 2 (hopefully an awesome game).
On the other hand PS3 really shook there foundations when a few 3rd party titles started looking better on them (Burnout & DMC4), anyways PS3 has a lot bigger exclusive titles like Haze(MEH.....), MGS4(No need to say anything about it), Siren(from the demo, i can assume it will be great), Socom (awesomeness), LBP(AAA game), Resistance 2(AAA), MotorStorm 2(Great game), Agency (MMO/RPG/Action game, is it coming this year?) and Killzone 2(delayed but jawdropping). Continuing this awesome momentum PS3 has WarDevil & Killzone 2 in the Q1 2009. So by the looks of it PS3 is troubling Xbox360. But is it dead, nopes far from it.

WarDevil is a PS3 exclusive. It was shown as a tech demo back in 2005. The game will run at 60fps and 1080p. Its kind of like God of War + DMC + Ninja Gaiden + I don't know. The graphics from the latest trailer are breath taking.

Let me add my two cents in here and I'll be on my way. MS, Sony and Nintendo, all have pretty good ideas to when they'll need a price cut. They know this because they have these guys and these guys are called economists. What they do is study market fluctuation, and they probably know a lot more about the market than any of us. All kidding aside, my point is this, they know more about what they're doing than we do. Some times it's not as profitable to cut prices to sell more. they're a lot of factors that go into these kinds of things, not just demand. and anyone who thinks I'm talking out my ass can take Econ 200 and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

But yes. They do know what they're doing. I'd say M$ especially, because it's in a control position not a respond position for the price of it's system. Sony is affected a lot more by price cuts microsoft makes than microsoft is by price cuts Sony makes. Microsoft will be affected by MGS more than any but a matching price cut by sony.

I would still expect M$ to cut the price once they release the new boards with lower costs. They're also decreasing the cost of repaired consoles, so the cut might be significant knowing they won't spend as much fixing it.

I agree that the Xbox 360 isn't dead, but I definantly am starting to feel that the Xbox 360's momentum is slowing down a bit.

Personally I think that Gears 2 will be the 360's last big push for a LONG while and I think that it's safe to make that assumption. Alan Wake has plenty of potential for 2009 and so does Splinter Cell Conviction and Halo Wars.

The fact that Microsoft will have already pretty much released most their "system seller" games titles by the end of 2008 is a fact. However, by the end of 2008, Sony will be just getting started with releasing "system seller" game titles. I honestly don't consider Splinter Cell Conviction or Halo Wars a "system seller" game title because the majority of the Halo fans got a 360 when Halo 3 dropped and Halo Wars wont have hardly an impact on the 360 sales at all. I'm not downplaying Halo Wars in anyway because it will sell pretty nicely just because it has the Halo name, I'm just saying that it wont be a "system seller" game for the simple fact that when Halo 3 dropped, that's when 360 console sales went through the roof.

In my true and honest opinion, I feel that the PS3 has MORE "system seller" games being released in 2009 and more upcoming system seller games that will skyrocket PS3 console sales. Sony is definantly setting the tone for 2009 VERY EARLY with Killzone 2 because that is a MAJOR game title in the very beginning of the year and other hotly anticipated games for 2009 like God of War 3, Wardevil, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy versus XIII haven't been released yet.

Whenever Shane Kim said, "Maybe 2009 will be Sony's year", I think that he knew deep down inside that the 360 wasn't going to be as strong in 2009 and when you compare announced PS3 exclusives to 360 exclusives for 2009, it's pretty obvious that 2009 is shaping up to be a blowout year for the Playstation 3 in every way possible.

In 2007, the Xbox 360 had it's year obviously. In 2008, I think that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be equal and on par in terms of anticipated games being released. In 2009, I'm thinking that it will be all Sony for the simple fact that there's just WAY more system seller games in the works.

My personal opinion is it's all too early to tell. There are many factors that could change the console game over the following six months. Namely E3, Newton, Online changes and Price Cuts which could be advantageous to Sony or Microsoft.

We have a very good idea about games for Sony next year but Microsoft seems to be taking a much more cautious approach and hasn't announced much if anything at all for 2009.

I'll wait until E3 has passed and we are much better informed to pass judgement on 2008-2009. But one thing's for sure, both consoles are alive and kicking. :)

Sony announced and pushed a lot of it's big titles for the next 2-3 years already. That's quite a break with tradition. Usually companies wait until the E3 the year before (or GDC sometimes) to formally announce their lineup for the next year.

The console used to cost over $800 to manufacture, and now they're only losing approx $50~60 on each console sold. That's pretty damn incredible. The PS3 is selling a lot of software, and we all know that's where the real money lies. Only the Wii is being sold at a profit right now. Microsoft loses money on each 360 sold, but not much. Earlier this year it was pegged at approx. $30, and it should be breaking even on hardware right about now. But those repair costs are killer. $1,000,000,000.00 in costs for repairs is nothing to sneeze at.

The 360's saving point is the huge amount of software it was pushing the past two years, but 2008 isn't looking very promising. GTA was guaranteed of course, and so is Gears of War 2. But the rest of the lineup doesn't look very compelling. Possibly Fable 2, but that's about it for the rest of the year (unless MS has a bunch of secret '08 titles to show at E3).

Is it magically ONLY the PS3 that costs less to manufacture now than it did 12 months ago?

It is only being outsold by all consoles worldwide since the last holiday season, it never had a chance in Japan, and the situation in Europe seems grim. So, it might not be dead if we do not consider the red ring of death, but it is gonna end up in dead last. Which is pathetic, really, considering how much of a head start it had, how many "AAA games" it has (fanboys say), how it has the best online service (according to fanboys), how ALL multiplatform games run better on it (well, that is what Xbox fanboys say, and I might just run the risk of believing them XD), and how it has 3 years of insurance (because it matters). ;)

1)was the first to come out in this Generation so of course theres no competition.

The 360 leads this industry its the reason why the gaming industry is so successful right now, its the single most leader in the Next-gen market in revenue.

XBL is the foundation of what it means to be in this next generation its also does very well and continues to evolve with innovation as the model all the competitions forms their console and services off of.

Xbox is becoming a serious Name in the industry and is now the backbone for devs income or bread and butter in the *NEXT GEN MARKET* making money for more parties than just the console companies. lol

Its hard to say if Blu-Ray can keep from flopping and although I'v said the lack of Blu-Ray in the 360 may hurt MSFT; gamers do not see that as anything more than a welcome Perk.

uncharted didn't have a name until just 3 months before release ALSO Its not the game its the company that makes it NCSOFT has always made good games and there is no doubt that these will be good too. I mean its about the company. God of War has been a good series so far why wouldn't the next one be good. Anyone playing on XBL and have seen the game for 2008 will tell you it’s not dead or dying. I know many of the PS3 fanboys would love to hear the 360 is dying but it’s not.
Let’s face it the 360 and the PS3 don’t compete with the Wii. The Wii had different type games, doesn’t have the graphic horse power that the PS3 and 360 have; which we know matters to PS3 and 360 gamers, hence all the game comparisons. If the 360 is dying or dead then the PS3 better do something because they aren’t doing as good as the Wii or 360 in North America.

Considering that the sales for the 360 have been in a steady decline and the attachment ratio is declining as well it is clear that some would think that the 360 is dead. I however digress on this thought and say that the 360 is not dead but rather dying. Give it time and it will soon be dead. To say that it is dead at the moment is a bit pretentious.

W/ a measley 4 in house devs they wont be able to compete w/ the onslaught of titles coming from Sony's 20 in house devs. Many would agree Sony has '08 wrapped up as far as titles go. Look at '09, w/ Killzone 2, FF13, and God of War 3. The only thing MS has announced so far that could possible stand up to this is Halo 4, if that does in fact come out.

Sony got off to a slow start and people mistook that for a sign of weakness. Actually, they were just supporting the PS2, but now that its done they have their focus on PS3 and the wealth of titles coming out proves this.

By the end of this year PSN will have all the features of XBL and more yet it will be free(and still have dedicated servers - no host advantage, less lag). Next year we will see a price drop for the PS3 as well.

And a slim version of the 360 is just not practical. This is one of the worst consoles when it comes to overheating. Unlike the PS3 that uses a laptop HDD, the 360 uses some ungodly shaped proprietary HDD that wouldn't work on a slim design, not to mention the huge powerbrick(the ps2 slim had a power brick but it was more manageable).

More variety for games not just shooter games.
They need to fix all the necessary hardware problems.
A lot of things need to happen before the 360 was come close to competing with the PS3.
Make online gaming free no $50/year.

but it is far from it, and I don't want to worry too many of you but most of my friends that have PS3's mainly use there Xbox-360 because they are not happy with the the online service for the PS3, Xbox-live already has most of the online funtionality that Sony have been struggling to achieve for what seems like an eternity, even Phil Harrison is now singing the praise for online functionality, yet Sony are still leagues away from being anywhere near the quality of Xbox-live.

Man is it dead. I played GTA for like 8 hours yesterday & it never froze. I guess it's dead. Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Fable 2, Gears of War 2.... nobody will buy those games, surely MGS4 will outsell Gears & everyone will throw their Xbox 360 away. No one wants private chat, messages, & friend invites in game that work. No one wants all the movies, game content, dlc & free demos on xbl.

Hell, 360 multiplats only look & run as good as the super computer known as the cell. Developers aren't making any money off 360's attach rate either & it's so hard & expensive to develop for. Besides, Microsoft is known for giving up easily & doesn't have deep pockets either.

If the xbox 360 is dead then the PS3 isn't far behind it. LBP and HOME and all of those titles will sell loads of copies yet I'm not sure how many people will be buying a PS3 or a xbox 360 this year or next.The PS2 proved that you must collect lots of different hardcore gamers not just a certain few. If any thing xbox 360 owners will buy a PS3 once theirs break. Others Will buy a PS3 for fear that a xbox 360 will break. Then other will just get tired of all of this and just buy PC ports. 20k+ is not exactly a good thing. I'm hoping that MGS really does prove tons where waiting for a PS3. Yet the sales of the PS3 are not that far ahead of the xbox 360 in most places except for Europe. Price is a big factor for both of them and the list of games are not exactly that good. If you are a PC gamer you may be excited yet these release list don't even seem like console releases minus the console sequels. GTA4 sells 6 million and the number of system sales barely moves.

These two system are too close to being alike for their own good and once MS fixes the RROD which is possible,!!! unless they designed it that way in order to keep the install base growing. Even with out any competition the sales of this system where slow. The main time that is sells systems is during the holidays and that's about it.

Sorry if these are your favorite consoles but the curse of high hardware cost and super hardcore game play has been past on to these consoles from the platform they are trying to copy the PC. If some how some way they can get more arcade or console like games out they will be ok. Yet lots of games and companies are not showing up on these systems. Just look at your PS2 collection when comparing the HD games (if you haven't traded them all) and you will see what I'm talking about.

I'm glad to see so many manic fans yet I'm starting to wonder if it is like that for the sheer fact that you have some one to argue or fight with? The future of the console war is as much about what you are playing now as it is what is coming out. Render and hype are replacing game play. That can not be good. So be careful what you wish for.

If you all remember most of the big games that came out where soon torn down. No game has stood at the top and been held up as a truly great game by the majority yet. Promises of the future are just promises. This is the same problem that the PC industry faced it's just doing so with younger faces this time and the help of video game franchise.

I hope more games get announced and more companies join the ranks of successful HD game sales or things will get worst. Every thing is so badly scrutinize this gen but that comes along with the moniker high end. So it's not exactly the fan boys fault either for all of the fighting. I'll leave that at that though.
