OT: Interesting conversation i had the other day, but does anybody think Sony will continue to have the monopoly over console RPG's this generation with PlayStation 4??

munnyndonuts4040d ago

It's possible! But right now, the only RPGs that the PS4 has confirmed for it are Deep Down and probably Project Beast. I've got high hopes for the console though! It's why I chose the PS4 over the XBOX One. Sony loves its RPGs.

Inception4040d ago

You forgot Natural Doctrine. The english ver will release this fall for PS4 (and PS3 & Vita).

munnyndonuts4040d ago

@Inception Whoops! That one slipped my mind but yeah, definitely looking forward to Natural Doctrine too ^^

I'm just saying that there likely wont be any "go-to" between the PS4 and X1. That if anything MS will be sure to buy exclusivity like they tried last time with early efforts with the 360. That they - hopefully if only for their sake - wont make the same mistakes which lead them pretty much embarrassing themselves out of the JP market.

At the same time such a war between MS and Sony for JRPG titles just to put on their latest consoles could result in those games not really being worth being put on those consoles.

@munnyndonuts

Yeah, i'm looking forward to Natural Doctrine too, even though i heard some negative review about the game.

Also, NIS and Falcom already working their next game for PS4

@godmars

If we're looking at PS3 and 360, obviously there will be a lot of "go-to" between PS4 and X1, especially if it comes to (J)RPG.

Chevalier4039d ago

You also forgot Omega Quintet ps4 exclusive.

RPGs like this aren't or haven't shown any sign of going anywhere near the PS4 much less the X1. Will likely remain on the 3DS and PSV with a few touching on the PS3. And then mostly in Japan.

JRPG makers where and still likely aren't ready for HD gaming and the AAA production requirements which came with it. Most are still making titles on a PS2 level.

munnyndonuts4040d ago

Yeah I'm aware of that. I was just saying that the PS4 itself will most likely be the go-to console for RPGs this generation as well, with the way things are going! :)

*sigh* maybe now that its easier to develop for we could see more JRPGs on the PS4, I look at this way there is a significant audience for JRPGs on it (or at least there will be when more make the jump to next gen), and JRPGs aren't know for having the most... hmm I don't know how to phrase this, expensive graphics as in they don't take as much time necessary to make them, as in we won't see a JRPG with graphics on par with the likes of Uncharted, the only ones I could see getting near there are FF, so there shouldn't have to have to be that much trouble in that department I would assume so I don't see why its not plausible for them to make lower grade graphicly games for next gen consoles, that's what it feels like is down with games like Tales of, Xillia, and Graces both look pretty but they aren't graphically stunning and I'm assuming it didn't take nearly as much resources into making them. But then its is probable for them to make the games, its significantly cheaper to make them for handhelds compared to making games on consoles period, but would it take the extra money to make games that aren't just handheld games with a higher pixel count that are ported to a console, the question is would it still be profitable for them? I would like to think so, and that there is a big enough audience but we need some studios to make the first jump.

But one things for sure I definitely see Sony having a monopoly on the JRPGs for the consoles that aren't multiplat, and even then most of the multiplat JRPG sales come from Sony consoles.

*this was kinda replying to Godmars, while also just speaking about your topic

Just saying the name makes me think of Resonance of Fate. How much I wish they made a sequel :(

SegaGamer4040d ago

I bet this doesn't get localized. It's 2014, games not getting localized now is ridiculous.
