Naughty Dog Programmers Talk About DirectX API And Optimization For PS4

Naughty Dog have proved their talent in the gaming industry with the work they have done. Their game engines are usually state-of-the-art and most of their games are usually “coded to the metal”. Recently, a couple of Naughty Dog developers had something new to share regarding optimization techniques on the PS4 and DirectX API.

I don't really care about the technical stuff....just bring out the games...I don't know why nd is mentioning dx12 if I highly doubt they will use it anyway...but hey someone always has something to say all the time in the video game industry

AceBlazer134029d ago

Not a scam just nothing the Xbox fans are hyping it up to be. I find it weird that the PC guys, the main benefactors of dx12, aren't talking it up nearly half as much as the Xbox fanboys.

PCpower4029d ago

Because Mantle from AMD walks all over DirectX12. DX12 is Microsoft's counter to AMD's Mantle API.

JasonKCK4029d ago

PCpower It's the other way around, DirectX has been around for 20 years. If you said "DX is a counter to OpenGL" I would have agreed. Mantle is the new kid on the block, still has a lot to prove.

Seafort4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

It's probably because MS keep saying they are coming back to PC gaming for the last 10-15 years and they never have.

DirectX 12 is just a software update for us. If it improves PC performance, great, if not no big deal.

I'm not sure why Xbone fanboys are looking forward to DX12 as it won't improve or transform their hardware at all.

It's mainly for PC architecture as PC devs don't code to the metal and DX12 is meant to get it closer to the metal than the last DX updates. Just wait and see if it's true now.

VegasDawg4029d ago

I would like to know how you know what it is, please explain....I'll be waiting.

Very talented Devs, but can someone please ask them how much time they have spent with it? ...and if this means that they are calling AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel all liars? ...cause they HAVE used it and have nothing but great things to say. Plus that'd be one hell of a PR stunt to make 3rd parties with no reason to lie for you...lie for you...esp since one of the biggest supporters could be seen as your direct competition.

These guys have the skill to make me believe them, but in this case, not the experience. Sounds more like damage control at this point. Esp being that he assumed it was a pr stunt...sounds like projection to me.

Let's just wait to see what happens either way and take it from there, right now, it's all just speculation otherwise.

@Pyramid (above) PS4 typically uses openGL from what I hear (I may be wrong) and the only quote that I've heard regarding OpenGL vs DX12 is that OpenGL will get "left in the dust".

There is no doubt that PS4 will be able to continue to make great games...I'm not sure why this means people can't accept that DX12 will create improvements for PC and X1. At this point they are so similar in the end result who cares? I think that is the biggest issue with sites like this, they are GREAT for so many things, but being that it's filled with "hardcore" gamers, we end up nitpicking the smallest details that make no difference to anyone but half of us...and then forget all the actual important details like...if games are fun or not.

@Pedro93 Please stop trolling everything, and at least add a point every now and then, I have never seen you make any sort of valid argument, all your posts just come across as trollish and insecure...you're not changing anyone's mind, in fact because of you alone I can no longer trust people named Pedro or the number 93

ats19924029d ago

Apparently you cant ask that question because its naughty dog and sony fanboys will believe anything they say.

pyramidshead4029d ago

That comment works both ways for Xbone fanboys. Not to mention they are more prone to PR BS this gen because they're console is getting trounced. Xbone fanboys are a little sensitive lately they will cling to anything.

rainslacker4029d ago

To me it seems more that he understands what DX12 offers in terms of low level access, and probably has a good idea about how much abstraction there is between the hardware and the actual program code(there will still be some for PC, it'll just be less than previous versions).

Keep in mind that the API's he(and many other Sony devs) are used to working with are probably very similar to what Mantle and DX12 offer, and are custom tailored to one set of hardware, and not groups of hardware like the PC version of DX12 has. Given this, MS already has an efficient low level API, so as many have already said, an additional API like DX12 will not show the huge improvement that many are saying. The only way you would see huge improvements is if the current low level implementation is extremely shoddy and not optimized at all.

Anyhow, Given that he probably understands this stuff, he can probably say with confidence that the level of abstraction that DX12 offers is just going to get in the way of what he is currently used to.

It's worth keeping in mind that this guy is also responsible for creating many of the same types of API's for all of Sony's dev software as he works closely with the ICE team, so for him, going directly to the hardware without any abstraction at all may be routine.

This may not be the case for other developers who are using these API's, however, with Sony's dev system there is a lot of openness on how to get things to work.

MS X1 also has it's own version of a low level API that does what DX12 already does, so it is entirely possible that the low level abstraction on DX12 is completely redundant, or possibly not even as efficient, as what is already there.

As far as OpenGL vs DX12, it's hard to say in terms of PS/MS hardware. Sony doesn't use an off-the-shelf version of OpenGL, but a highly customized one. Basically Sony's graphics API's are built around the core of OpenGL. Much of this customization was built by Sony's ICE team over the course of last gen and up until today...and the guy in this article is part of that team.

beebap4029d ago

Exactly why dx12 is going to affect pc more hence why nvidia etc are praising it nothing to do with xbox one..not saying it will not help xbox one but microsoft said myself dx12 was bulit from the custom dx11 that already in the xbox.I think there of course be improvements just like sony is improving theirs.

Redempteur4029d ago

"Very talented Devs, but can someone please ask them how much time they have spent with it? ...and if this means that they are calling AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel all liars?"
NO,
Seriously , you guys have to hear and see things in context.

All they are saying is that in their context , most of the advantages oof DX12 are null or disadvatageous because they have another way that work better for them

Doesn't mean that DX12 is crap , just means that DX12 has situations where it's not as good as you'd expect and in those situations they have better alternatives , because they can mess with the inside of the hardware directly

MegaRay4029d ago

Nah, I wont believe anything about DX12 whether its positive or negative even from ND. Unless its Andy Gavin of course, speaking of which, somebody asks him?

Jrmy844029d ago

Same, proof will be revealed soon enough.

Neil Druckmann Reveals He’s Working on an Unannounced Game at Naughty Dog

Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us, is working on a new, unannounced game at Naughty Dog.

RaidenBlack22d ago

I know they've expertise in third person games.
But given the lack there of in PS catalog, I'd want the other project to be a narrative first person ND game.
Look, there are lots of 3rd person Sony games in variety of flavors. And ND is already doing intergalactic. And since they're pretty expert at gameplay and tech wise in whatever they do, they can easily venture a new genre and ship a first person game/shooter.

VenomUK22d ago

Hopefully the lead character is a boss babe who will challenge the patriarchy.

RaidenBlack22d ago

So, judging from the dislikes, hardcore Sony fans here don't like first person games, anymore?

arkard22d ago

Let naughty dog do what they are great at, 3rd person games

crazyCoconuts22d ago

I don't really have a big opinion on first vs third person perspective. That's one of the least important things to me when rating how much I like a game

Flewid63822d ago

Sounds horrible. The downvotes are right on this one.

badz14922d ago

I actually hate 1st person. very hard to associate with a character you only see their hands most of the time.

OtterX22d ago

funny thing is with failures like Concord and soon to be Marathon, Factions could have been Sony's guaranteed huge success with a shooter! I don't ever play online shooters anymore, but I would have come out of shooter retirement for a new Factions game.

RaidenBlack21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

{ coming from the above thread }
So PS Fellas hate first person games now? (Understandable)
But praise Killzone and Resistance series, as well?
And hope for a return of first party first person games? ~ but from where? insomniac is deep in marvel territory, guerilla is deep in aloy territory ... suckerP are not as big to undertake that change + dedicated to Ghost series
The only options are ND and Santa Monica, who are rumoured to be involved in parallel projects. ~ so take your pick.
And the other 'new' studios at Sony are not that hot right now with knee deep in live service fiasco

darthv7222d ago

...Way of the Warrior 2: Electric Boogaloo

Amplitude22d ago

It’d be cool if they bought the Parappa licence and made Parappa 3 that’d be the real good timeline

Lightning7723d ago

Wait I thought they cancelled a game? Or did they announce another project?

https://wccftech.com/naught...

pwnmaster300023d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I’m assuming it’s the unannounced game in the title you posted.

“Naughty Dog Reportedly Canceled a Single Player Game This Year, But Another Unannounced Game Is Still in the Works“

Lightning7722d ago

OK I gotcha. That makes sense.

jznrpg22d ago

Devs cancel games all the time early stages if it doesn’t turn out the way they envisioned it. We just don’t hear about every one of them.

Notellin22d ago

Yeah only a narcissist like Druckmann would announce a game this early that has a 99% chance of being cancelled.

badz14922d ago

so a 2028 release at the soonest

Lightning7722d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Some speculate it could be Uncharted spin off. It's already 3 years in production so yeah 2028 maybe 2027 at the absolute earliest but most likely 28 release.

Also to add. kojimas next game that's not OD is said to be 5 to 6 years out for PS. That metal gear inspired game. These games are just too far off it seems.

pwnmaster300023d ago

This dude is busy.
So who is running intergalactic?

Knushwood Butt23d ago

'We have several directors on Intergalactic. I work with two game directors: Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau, [and] I have a co-writer in Clair Carré.'

pwnmaster300022d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Okay you got me, I skimmed the article and video .
Thanks lol

vTuro2422d ago

Cuckmann is going to be Naughty Dog's downfall.

itBourne22d ago

Going to be? The damage is already done lol.

Flewid63822d ago

Sunlight is good for you, I promise. lol

vTuro2422d ago

Damage has been done but it's not too late yet if they dump him now. Probably won't happen though. It's sad, honestly. We'll see what happens after Intergalactic. That game is going to have a huge impact one way or another.

StormSnooper21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Yes because they didn’t make some of the greatest games. Right, we all just agree to live in your fantasy from now on.

Flewid63822d ago

yall say that about ever developer and then they end up becoming more successful lol

mkis00722d ago

Downfall? If anything he is a huge reason they are on the map! A few apes don't like the material hasn't stopped his games from being massive hits.

DarXyde22d ago

I have grievances with Druckmann, but he does deserve some benefit of the doubt. He's been in crucial roles at the company through all of their successes.

Maybe wait and see?

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev Says Resident Evil 4 Inspired Uncharted and Many More Action Games

Former Naughty Dog dev says Resident Evil 4 inspired Unchartted and even Gears of War, particularly the over-the-shoulder camera view.

CrimsonWing6924d ago

It revolutionized third-person shooters, in a genius way that gives you full control of aiming.

CrimsonWing6923d ago

No, I mean RE4. Like the whole snap to over-shoulder and precision aiming was what I meant.

I won’t deny Winback does pave the way in some respect. But it’s not the same at all.

InUrFoxHole24d ago

Both are great series. That's awesome

Samonuske24d ago

I thought this was common knowledge. Resident Evil Revolutionised over the shoulder aiming in 3rd person shooters/action games

italiangamer24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Influenced basically every third person action game made after it, GTA uses the over the shoulder perspective when shooting since the 4th installment, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 too and the Batman Arkham series has the over the shoulder perspective as the main camera throughout the whole game series.
Obviously there are a ton more examples but you get the point 🗿.

Can the mods add a new category for, 'Trash'?

Cellblock1143d ago

What makes this "Trash", exactly?

StormSnooper43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Did you even read it? The article is legit. Can you elaborate?

On topic: the article has a point. I can see that happening

raWfodog42d ago

I could see this game having a similar feel to 'The Expanse' if it was to be adapted for TV. That's just based off of the looks and vibes that the trailer gives me since we don't know anything else about this game LOL.
