Very atmospheric, but I still want to know what the game's about.

Looking at the first one, I can only wonder about the game mechanics. <rimshot badumpbump> ;)

You like to pride yourself on being a "gamer", yet you haven't bothered to look into Alan Wake?!

Here's the original press release/announcement:

Remedy Entertainment Ltd, a leading developer of cinematic action games, unveiled Alan Wake, their new title, today at the E3 expo (Electronic Entertainment Expo, ATI Technologies Inc. stand) in Los Angeles.

Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller, a unique new take in the world of gaming. The game is set in an idyllic all-American small town and its surroundings in the state of Washington. Alan Wake, the game's protagonist, is a bestselling horror writer, who writes a novel about his darkest nightmares. In the game, those nightmares come true. As with Remedy's previous games, story and atmosphere are fundamental elements.

"In Alan Wake we want to weave the story tightly into the gameplay. Combining intense and cinematic storytelling with player freedom is an interesting and exciting challenge," says Sam Lake, Lead Writer, "Mood and atmosphere are essential parts of a thriller, and we want them to be present throughout the whole gameplay experience."

The game features a massive, open world for the players to explore. The game design is mission based with the player as the driving force behing the action, and as with their previous games, Remedy again focuses completely on delivering the best possible single player experience.

"We're putting a huge effort into building a free-roaming, living world for the players." says Petri Jarvilehto, Lead Game Designer, "The true power of the next generation comes from the dynamic nature of the environment, not only making things pretty, but also making the world more versatile, varied and immersive."

The use of light is a significant gameplay element. Remedy has developed proprietary new technology to support the gameplay of the title and to push the high definition visuals to the next level.

<shaking head> I see some 'splaining <sic, for THWIP> is required here.

I was setting up the joke about "game *mechanics*" you fool. (Mechanic, get it?) It was a riff on the early "Who is Alan Wake?" buzz early last year when they were being so tight-lipped about the gameplay.

You do remember that don't you? Or did you only take notice of the game after it was announced that it wasn't coming to the PS3 as originally suggested?

You just have to turn everything into an argument. Don't be so bitter. You'll live longer.

I got your lame joke, but that didn't explain "I still want to know what the game is about".
I've been following this game since BEFORE it was shown at E3 2005. I'm a HUGE Remedy/Max Payne fan, and have always kept up with their projects. Of course, I WAS happy to see MS make the wise move of making this exclusive. The PS3 really isn't worthy. ;)

<banging head, now> Oh muh guh. I said I wondered about the gameplay so that I could make the stinker about the mechanic. Of course it was a bad joke! Hence the "rimshot". Or do you know what a rimshot is? (Hint, it's nothing dirty.)

My god you're dense.

It's like an action RPG Thriller Hybrid. Might be called a new genre. You use weapons, hide, ask around for clues, find stuff and use day light and darkness as weapons and survival.

This game looks awesome, especially the atmosphere and environment. This game is definitely a new type of game that I am very interested in.

...was one of my most anticipated titles for the XBOX; I was absolutely CRUSHED when Lionhead cancelled it. If MS/Molyneux don't revive that game for the 360, I may drive to Redmond and burn their HQ to the GROUND. :{
